It was a rare confessional moment for Barack Obama. At a Miami fundraiser in mid-June, the president acknowledged that it’s “not as cool” as it was in 2008 to support him. It isn’t just a matter of fewer hip posters and viral videos. It’s a matter of votes. Rekindling the enthusiasm of African-Americans, educated white liberals, Latinos, young people, and union members—the Democratic Party’s most loyal and progressive members—will be a huge challenge. After all, you can only elect the first African-American president once, and the past two and a half years have deeply disappointed many liberals. “I know a lot of the kids who worked hard in 2008,” says Hodding Carter III, adviser to the last one-term Democratic president (Jimmy Carter) and now a professor at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill. “They walk around like cattle who’ve been hit with stun guns between their eyes. This isn’t how it was supposed to be.”
Aabout the strongest argument Obama can make to base voters: it could, and will, be a lot worse if you don’t vote for me. That’s true, and fear is usually a pretty good motivator in politics. But it still isn’t what people were hoping for, and it seems inevitable that some percentage of the most loyal Democrats will stay home.

if you surf around the liberal blogs and websites, you will see that the hatred of republicans/conservatives is still alive. The theme will be that anything, no matter how bad, is better than any republican.

I believe you. Liberalism is a mental disease and independents are the ones smarting from their decision in 08’. The imbeciles, morons, idiots, commies, illegals, fags who make up Odumbo’s base won’t change their minds. They are brain-dead.

Frankly, these groups are disappointed in Obama - but come November of 2012, they’ll be fully engaged.
The only group that I could envision seeing a drop-off in support is young people. Supporting Obama in ‘08 was the cool thing to do.
The most important group that’s not mentioned is not a natural base of the Democrats. It’s the white suburban independent voter. That includes the “soccer mom” sub-group. If they stay away from Obama and the Dems (like they did in 2010), it will bode well for the GOP.
Promise them more stuff. They believed it the first time.

Really - Newsweek should explain why they think this is true.
Blacks, the mainstream media and unions will continue to goosestep behind Obama off a cliff without a second thought, and he will lose a few points with Latinos and Jews, but not much.
I think conservatives have a shot, because they aren’t stupid as liberals, and won’t allow a second term.
I think there was Bush burn out in the last election, and McCain sucked, but there won’t be any complacency this time.
The stakes are too high this time.
Most liberals will remain stupid until the bitter end. They're just not honest and smart enough to admit they're ever wrong about anything, especially political ideology.

It starts off with a declarative statement, and then poses a question that begs for an answer to that same declarative statement.
I guess a basic command of the English language is no longer a requirement to be a journalist, or even an editor. Crikey......
That said, there's no way for Obama to "rev up" his demoralized base. Most of his staunchly loyal supporters are in the Gimme Class, or are so politically, educationally, and culturally clueless, as to be beyond redemption.
These are the people who won't even bother to show up at the polls on election day, because The Won is their messiah, and he'll just magically reappear as their president, because everyone is going to vote for him. The Republicans don't stand a chance, because the media told them so, so why bother?
Of those who really are demoralized, many will be too disillusioned to make the effort to give him another vote of confidence. The thrill is gone for them, and unless they take the next year or so truly informing themselves, they're not going to even consider voting for the Republican. They'll just stay home.
Then, there are those who have actually been horrified at what they've done. These folks have real buyer's remorse, because they've had their eyes open for the previous two years, and have witnessed Obama ripping our nation's foundations asunder.
Many of these folks are about to cross the Rubicon, and give the Republican a chance. The more outspoken that Republican challenger is, and the more in opposition to Obama's agenda they are, the more likely these folks are to vote for them.
This is all the more reason that our nominee CANNOT be another milquetoast RINO, maneuvered into position by the ruling class. They have GOT to be a fierce patriot, who's unloading on Obama and the Marxist Dems with both barrels blazing.
The only candidate on our side who has naturally, and consistently met that bar, is Sarah Palin. We must ensure that she is our nominee in 2012. It's for all the marbles this time.
