Just in time for Independence Day, a retired Marine will be able to fly his United States and Marine Corps flags without fear of fines.
The Lakeland Village Community Association filed a lawsuit Dec. 9 against Mike Merola, who has a 20-foot flagpole in his backyard. The neighborhood association claimed the flagpole violated the northwest Harris County community's design rules.

You move into an HOA, you get stuck with their idiotic rules. If nothing else, he should have attended the HOA meetings and proposed rule changes. He should have also run for HOA prez and thrown it all out.
A couple of years ago my neighbor, who is a retired marine and a recipient of a Purple Heart (Vietnam), put up a pole and hoisted a flag in his front yard about the size you would find in a school yard. The HOA sent him a letter stating to remove it or they would.
His reply to the HOA was, “Come and take if you think you can. I’ll be waiting.”
The flag and pole are still there!
We enjoy seeing him fly his flags. Today, for July 4th celebrations, multiple neighbors, including myself, have our flags flying as well.

I don’t own a home, but if I ever bought one, I would never consider anyplace with an HOA. It would be like moving to the Soviet Union.....
Heh - my primary home is in a little city in VA, that my wife decribes as an “HOA gone bad”.
Still, we were born here, and we are raising our kids here - so we shall fight the good fight.
But anybody who buys property in an HOA is a flipping idiot.
Yes beware the HOA. They will pursue you like the hounds of Hell.

Picturing the kind of person that wants to serve on a HOA board.....bet the argument over who gets to tell the Marine to take his flag down was pretty funny.
I can’t remember either.
I have dealt with HOA’s for 27 years and they are mostly a pain in the butt. But to be fair there are a good deal of pain in the butt men running them also. I would say they are an equal opportunity aggravation.
