How much they should charge: Just enough to pay for highway upkeep.

As you can see, owning a gas station / convenience store in NC near the border is a losing proposition......thanks to state Govt.

Don’t forget that this number is the total state and federal tax. The feds tax is 18.4 cents/gal thus the remaining difference is state. The feds tax on diesel is 24.4 cents/gal.

...enough to pay for highway upkeep.

But in CA that barely pays the penions of the five retired CALTRANS workers for each one active worker.

I live in NJ near both PA and NY, and we get folks crossing over to buy our gas (and not pump it) all the time. Amazing NJ has the 2nd lowest gas tax?? How is that even possible? I hope they don’t find out!

No surprise to see Illinois up there among the leaders. But we still are out of money and have lousy roads.

I NEVER buy Kansas gas, NEVER!!! Missouri's is always so much cheaper, I think that is somewhat strange because Kansas is Typically more conservative than Missouri, I have never understood that.

That is also why when I hear People say "Gas needs to be back to being 1.97" I always thought was really expensive, because our gas was typically 69 Cents when I was growing up (late 90's)

Third lowest by my count, but yeh, I’m surprised they haven’t taxed it higher by now. My own state neds to cut ours in half. Now I know how we get the money for a new road project every single week.

I used to ply the highways between SW Pennsylvania and Spartanburg, SC regularly. We always filled up near the SC and VA lines. We bought our meals when we stopped to fill up. Didn't even stop in NC unless someone had to take a leak.

So South Carolina and Virginia got our food dollars as well as our gas tax dollars. North Carolina got our urine.

What’s the price per gallon by you now? Last night it was $3.64 here in Rochelle. We drove to Morrison for a meeting (about 30 miles from the Mississippi) and it was $3.56. For some reason, our area is always higher than surrounding areas.
