John Lennon was a closet Republican, who felt a little embarrassed by his former radicalism, at the time of his death - according to the tragic Beatles star's last personal assistant.
Fred Seaman worked alongside the music legend from 1979 to Lennon's death at the end of 1980 and he reveals the star was a Ronald Reagan fan who enjoyed arguing with left-wing radicals who reminded him of his former self.
In new documentary Beatles Stories, Seaman tells filmmaker Seth Swirsky Lennon wasn't the peace-loving militant fans thought he was while he was his assistant.
He says, "John, basically, made it very clear that if he were an American he would vote for Reagan because he was really sour on (Democrat) Jimmy Carter.
"He'd met Reagan back, I think, in the 70s at some sporting event... Reagan was the guy who had ordered the National Guard, I believe, to go after the young (peace) demonstrators in Berkeley ........

Close your eyes,
Have no fear,
The monsters gone,
He’s on the run and your daddy’s here,
Beautiful,
Beautiful, beautiful,
Beautiful Boy,
Before you go to sleep,
Say a little prayer,
Every day in every way,
It’s getting better and better,
Beautiful,
Beautiful, beautiful,
Beautiful Boy,
Out on the ocean sailing away,
I can hardly wait,
To see you to come of age,
But I guess we’ll both,
Just have to be patient,
Yes it’s a long way to go,
But in the meantime,
Before you cross the street,
Take my hand,
Life is just what happens to you,
While your busy making other plans,
Beautiful,
Beautiful, beautiful,
Beautiful Boy,
Darling,
Darling,
Darling Sean.
Heard the same about Bob Dylan. I still prefer the Stones...
It’s no surprise to me that Lennon changed his mind on left-wing radicals. He was a smart guy who figured out what a bunch of crap it all was. Too bad that he was corrupted by that nutjob wife of his, though.
From what I remember about John Lennon and from what I’ve read about him since his death he seems to have been a good, kind soul who was embittered by his Mothers death, and this bitterness took the form of left wing idiocy during the 60’s
I guess it’s possible but I’m still not sold on this article. I think The lyrics of the song “Imagine” reflect more of what kind of philosophy and beliefs Lennon had.
“Imagine” that I would never have to hear that stupid song again for the rest of my life. That would be wonderful indeed.
Lennon was turning conservative in more ways than one. He donated to the NYPD for the purchase of protective vests. He lambasted “benefit concerts” as absolute rip offs and promised to never be involved with another one. Plus he saw the big tax bite.
Imagine was earlier, this claims a later conversion as he settled down with a family life. That can change people. People do change, PJ O’Rourke was an ultra-liberal protesting the Vietnam War at one point.
The worst thing about IMAGINE is that it was used to close the film THE KILLING FIELDS while so much of the song perfectly describes Khymer Rouge beliefs (except they still found reasons to kill...no possessions has to be enforced ya know).
I always figured that is why he was living in the USA instead of his home country.
“Interesting... but I wonder if Yoko would substantiate this claim.”
Only if she thought she could milk a buck out of it. That woman has lived off of the corps of John every day of her life. She is a human maggot.
I’m a huge Beatles fan, but have been somewhat anti-John for a number of years. Mostly due to how he left his first wife and son for that screaming banshee of a woman Yoko. I don’t mind so much that he divorced his first wife, but the way he abandoned his son Julian, was terrible.
This topic about John gives me a little more respect for him, but he is still my least favorite Beatle due to the treatment of his first son.
Nah - trust me, it’s none the better when stoned
As they say south of the border; “Mierda de Toro”.
The lyrics on Double Fantasy also elude to a new pragmatism in his life...
I always suspected there was something behing the song “Watching the Wheels”. This could be part of it.
Nah - trust me, its none the better when stoned
He He! You know, I meant real stoning but, you got a point.
Really? does this sound like Reagan?
Imagine lyrics
Songwriters: Lennon, John;
Imagine there’s no heaven, it’s easy if you try
No people below us, above it’s only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today
Imagine there’s no countries, it isn’t hard to do
No need to kill or die for and no religions too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one
Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger a brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing for the world
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
Take my hand and join us
And the world will live, will live as one

I once read that he used to watch TV evangelists regularly.
