I was a strong opponent of same-sex marriage. Fourteen years ago, Andrew Sullivan and I forcefully debated the issue at length online (at a time when online debate was a brand new thing).
Yet I find myself strangely untroubled by New York state's vote to authorize same-sex marriage -- a vote that probably signals that most of "blue" states will follow within the next 10 years.
I don't think I'm alone in my reaction either. Most conservatives have reacted with calm -- if not outright approval -- to New York's dramatic decision.
Why?
The short answer is that the case against same-sex marriage has been tested against reality. The case has not passed its test....
If people like me had been right, we should have seen the American family become radically more unstable over the subsequent decade and a half.
Instead -- while American family stability has continued to deteriorate -- it has deteriorated much more slowly than it did in the 1970s and 1980s before same-sex marriage was ever seriously thought of.
By the numbers, in fact, the 2000s were the least bad decade for American family stability since the fabled 1950s. And when you take a closer look at the American family, the facts have become even tougher for the anti-gay marriage position.
Middle-class families have become somewhat more stable than they used to be. For example: College-educated women who got married in the 1990s were much less likely to get divorced than equally educated women who got married in the 1970s.
What's new and different in the past 20 years is the collapse of the Hispanic immigrant family....

David Frum. That’s all I need to know. Well, beyond what the Bible tells me that is...
How much further can the stability of the American family deteriorate? Even entropy does not keep pace.
He's an idiot.
Marriage proceeds government.
David Frum - another progressive republican.
Levin kick Frums ass one more time, please?
David Frum is not a Conservative nor is he even from the right. I smell a full David Brock style conversion coming in his vain attempt to keep attention from the chattering class. He is a loser.
What's that? He says he should have been MORE progressive and socially Liberal?
Oh. How unexpected.
Frum’s use of data here is laughable. Just look around you, brother. Does it seem like the decay is slowing down? The 2000’s was the decade of reality television, massive expansion of online porn, and increased decay of all kinds.
The reason most conservatives are calm about this is because it was fully expected and it appears there is nothing we can do about it except go on with our lives and let Truth win its own victory in the end.
No matter what he says, he's not a conservative, is he?
Someone needs to ask him if he’s OK with GAY SEX-ED in public schools.
You got it exactly right.. I waiting to see how long it takes for this country, society, culture to collaps and see what replaces it..
Unfortunately, I know a self-styled conservative who laps-up anything that Frum vomits forth.
While it is significant to see a major state legalize homosexual marriage through the legislature, and not a court order, let’s recall the parallel movement to define marriage in state constitutions.
31 out of 50 states have defined marriage via constitutional amendment. There may be a few more “blue” states which will pass homosexual marriage laws in the next few years, but most of the country will not change their definition of marriage without a U.S. Supreme Court ruling forcing a change.
Well, since this is New York, now the “Today” show can include homosexual couples in their annual wedding contest. They had resisted doing so in the past because they were excluding couples who couldn’t be legally married in New York. Now that this excuse is gone, expect to see homosexual couples represented very well in that event.
Speaking of the MSM, part of the muted reaction to this is because the MSM has shoved the liberal gay agenda down our throats. The MSM has pushed the narrative that any “discrimination” against homosexual people in any way is the same as racial discrimination. Because this narrative has taken hold, it makes it more difficult for anyone to make the case against changing the definition of marriage.
The liberal media has been a cheerleader for this cause all along anyway.
I can believe it. Look at the diversity of opinion here on FR. Those who call themselves ‘conservative’ are not a monolithic bloc in any sense.
Regarding the term “homosexual”, I understand that the homosexual community is trying to do away with that term. The reason is that they consider it a clinical sort of description. They want to make the word “homosexual” fall into disuse, as the term “Negro” has falled into disuse.
They prefer the term “gay”, or descriptions such as gay man, lesbian, trans-gendered to describe who they are.
I’m frustrated that a perfectly good word, “gay”, now means only homosexual. The original meaning of that word has fallen into disuse, speaking of that concept. Do you ever hear the word gay used anymore in a context which doesn’t mean homosexual???
Very good points.
As the MSM, tries to “normalize” gay marriage, it will be interesting to see if there is a push back from their viewers.
Frum?
i suspect he is just lying. He always agreed with the homosexual.
