A coalition of more than 600 mayors has launched a national TV ad campaign calling attention to a recent Al Qaeda propaganda video that urges the terrorist group’s followers to exploit loopholes to purchase firearms without background checks. The mayors’ ad is running on national cable news programs this week. It urges Congress to pass the Fix Gun Checks Act of 2011 and the Denying Firearms to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2011, bills pending that would close the loopholes Al Qaeda publicized.

Video is at the link. As usual, it touts Al Qaeda's foremost American gun policy expert saying that people can buy automatic weapons without background checks. Cynical, especially given the fine print at the end that "Terror suspects can buy semi-automatic assault rifles from private sellers with no background check".

What really strikes me as shameful about the ad is not anything that is said or printed, but what is implied in the final shot of the ad:

Message loud and clear: American soldiers have been killed due to the alleged gun show loophole and more will die if it isn't closed. Therefore, we must curtail the very freedoms that these brave men and women died to protect by requiring anyone who so much as attends a gun show to register with the federal government and abridge the 2nd amendment rights of anyone on a terrorist watchlist (even innocent, law-abiding folks who wound up on it due to bureaucratic incompetence). Utterly shameful and reprehensible.

Hey, I shelled out my hard-earned cash to get in that gun show and get my hand stamped. Why should I leave because Omar & Achmed show up in their kufi-goofy caps and beards? Here in South Carolina they would quickly acquire a large entourage of good old boys following them attentively up and down the aisles offering friendly comments and inviting them to come to Jesus.
