Media pretty excited over Bachmann’s John Wayne gaffe in Iowa
hot air ^ | 6/27/11 | Allahpundit

Watch below courtesy of a YouTube account titled, no joke, “BachmannLovesGacy.” The gaffe: She claimed in an interview with Fox News that she shares the spirit of another famous Waterloo, Iowa, resident, John Wayne. But John Wayne never lived in Waterloo; John Wayne Gacy did, which means this is either (a) another sloppy factual error a la her claiming that Lexington and Concord are located in New Hampshire or (b) some sort of Freudian slip that proves she secretly identifies with lunatics or something. (Bachmann loves Gacy!) Her critics will insist they’re sticking to the first narrative but their read on Bachmann has always been that she’s evil and/or nuts. See, e.g., Matt Taibbi’s long profile of Bachmann in Rolling Stone this month asserting that she’s “grandiose crazy, late-stage Kim Jong-Il crazy” or Colbert King recently dismissing her as “Barbie with fangs.” It’s embarrassing that she wouldn’t know that the Duke lived in Winterset, Iowa, not Waterloo, given that she’s been selling herself over the past few days as a proud Hawkeye, but no one will care in a day. Without the Gacy angle, though, to nudge along the “she’s nuts” storyline, you probably wouldn’t have heard of this; it would have been dismissed as her mixing up two town names that begin with “W” and that would have been it.

In fact, it’s even lamer than that. It turns out there is a Waterloo connection for John Wayne:

Bachmann’s campaign pointed out to ABC News today that actor John Wayne’s parents did live in Waterloo, although the actor himself did not.

And a little internet research proves that point correct.

Yeah. And now in post #16 it's also directly available here
via the original Youtube link. Without a side trip to Hot Air.

How about that?

Well the MSM has been building her up over the last week. Now that she’s announced her campaign, they’ll start tearing her down.

I don’t know when Bachmann left Waterloo.

Bachmann could say “I always thought that John Wayne was from Waterloo. That’s what we used to think, in Waterloo, back in the day. Perhaps Waterloo “claimed” John Wayne as their own back in the day, when they shouldn’t have, when it was only his parents who lived there.” Perhaps Michelle could say she misunderstood the story when she first heard it, so many years ago, in good ol Waterloo, IA. Her case could be backed up by something like John Waynes name associated with Waterloo in the past. A John Wayne movie festival in Waterloo 30 years ago. Anything like that.

John Wayne Gacy apparently lived in Waterloo for a time, but was in fact born in Chicago, which I know because I lived there all during his notorious capture and murder spree. It was BIG news there.
John Wayne the actor was born in Winterset Iowa, ( a fact I somehow knew from an early age) but his parents lived for a time in Waterloo.
So, for all practical purposes, they’re “even”.
The Gacy connection is exploited in this Bachmann story because it usefully plays into the ‘she’s nuts and unreliable as someone who can’t even get the simplest facts
straight, even while making a pandering remark to Iowans by associating herself with a patriotic American icon. A simple gaffe turns to gold because one of her researchers or fact-checkers got the facts wrong (probably by googling John Wayne Waterloo, and what came up was a factoid about Wayne’s parents living there before or after he was born) and a second reporter doing his own research
found the same fact about Gacy having lived there. The fact is, if nobody had found this fact about Gacy, Michelle’s gaffe would’ve barely registered, instead of now being utilized as a cornerstone in the ‘GET MICHELLE’ project.

“one of Iowa’s most beloved actors, John Wayne.”

So, a quick check shows that even today, in Waterloo, there’s “favorite son” attached to him. Not explicitly as a Waterloo resident, but as an Iowan.

I did not realize you had a problem with the article. Generally I find the commentary and journalism at Hot Air useful.

Matter of fact in years of posting, this is the first complaint I have heard. The salient point was in their writing was that Bachmann was not incorrect in citing John Wayne's Iowa roots. Also, as she is now the new target for the JournOlist Soros funded attack machine, the response is warrented- hence the Hot Air link instead of only the vid link.

I take it you are not a Bachmann fan?

Gacy was NOT “from” Waterloo, Iowa. He lived there for 2 or 3 years in the mid-1960’s. He was from Chicago.

She was stretching to claim John Wayne was from Waterloo, but her reference had nothing to do with Gacy, since he was not “from” Waterloo either.

Hit piece by the MSM. Welcome to Sarah Palin’s world.

Correct. What Palin said was true; and very relevant to her qualifications.

She was making the point that being governor of Alaska was a wee bit different than being the governor of most any other state. Alaska was physically close enough to our mortal enemy to actually see it!
That affects what her role of governor would have entailed and issues she would have faced.
A bit different than being the governor of New Hampshire!

She NEVER said she could see Russia from her house!! It's an amazing crock of bullcrap that uneducated, liberal comedians could possibly spin and lie about this. I still get angry thinking about this.
Palins point was very relevant and she did not make a gaffe in anyway.
It was pure; deliberate character assassination. Part of it may be that the leftists who attempted the smear really are that clueless about Alaska.
I have never been to Alaska; but this is a fact I have known since I was kid. I just assumed everyone knew basic geography, and would know that the the Aleutian Islands tail out within visual distance of Russia..
I guess I assume too much. I guess liberals who never leave large cities just are not that educated about many things.

NOTE to Republican Presidential Candidates.

If you want to get elected, KNOCK OFF THE BULL**** TRIVIA!!! Only the "media's" boy Barry can get away with these screw ups. If a Republican says something wrong, millions of innocent old people, women, children and puppies die.

KNOCK OFF THE BULL**** TRIVA AND STICK TO THE FACTS! Geeesh!

‘Gacy was NOT “from” Waterloo, Iowa. He lived there for 2 or 3 years in the mid-1960’s. He was from Chicago.’

Thanks for pointing that out. I had almost forgotten. I am originally from the Chicago area and he was a horror story there.

And it seems that John Wayne is considered a son of Iowa by many Iowans.

So, it seems not only was Bachmann correct, but the lie reached half way around the world before the truth is being told.
