I got this e-mail for where I work regarding Blocking of Freerepublic: From: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Sent: Monday, June 27, 2011 8:14 AM To: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Subject: Freerepublic.com
XX. XXXXXXX:
As per our telephone conversation, I cannot provide access to Freerepublic.com. One of analysis tools we utilize to perform checks of sites indicated FR had been or is currently hosting malicious software or serving as an intermediary to domains hosting malicious software. As I stated on the telephone, this does not mean the site is currently hosting anything malicious or serving as an intermediary for malicious sites; rather, it has done so in the past.
Thank you,
The nerd(s) in charge of the firewall configuration are leftist twits?
This part kicks a lot of sites out of workplaces via firewall. Simply put, all links out of a site are scanned and if they link to a site that has malware on it, bam, it goes on a block list. Every link someone adds to this site increases the chance of that. I'm thinking, for example, about all the Examiner.com blog links. That site is so full of malware and tracking software it isn't even funny.
If it’s been related to malware, sometimes those are blocked IP address range, which invariably catches innocent sites at the same hosting service. Otherwise, many products block sites that contain blogs or discussion groups.
“The nerd(s) in charge of the firewall configuration are leftist twits”?
...bingo!
Are the DUmmies blocked, too?
because this site has no kiddie porn?
When I was a contractor to the Air Force they simply said that the site had chat or bulletin board posting capabilities and was therefore a restricted site.
Must be the DUFU threads.
Navy Marine Corps Internet (NMCI) doesn’t block FR.
I'm currently an Air Force contractor and I recall it being blocked for a very brief period of time back around 1995 or so, then allowed to return without posting capabilities. Now, at least where I work, there are both reading and posting access. It's hard to see why they would block it now, given the wide-open access to YouTube and social networking sites.
Years ago when I worked for the Army FR was blocked as “firearms/criminal enterprise”...
Free Republic is completely against the indoctrination of homo’s into our armed forces.
Perhaps this is a reason?
Because Freerepublic.com is not the Huffington Post or the like. /s =.=
Because biological and chemical warfare is posted on the weekly Gardening Thread.
It's also sometimes fairly emphatic in its criticism of the Commander in Chief and the First Lady. I know it doesn't happen that often, but...
Very interesting that a site that did not exist could be blocked.
The DoD blocked access for a day or two, but enough of us requested explanations that they restored it.
