..serving as an intermediary to domains hosting malicious software. This part kicks a lot of sites out of workplaces via firewall. Simply put, all links out of a site are scanned and if they link to a site that has malware on it, bam, it goes on a block list. Every link someone adds to this site increases the chance of that. I'm thinking, for example, about all the Examiner.com blog links. That site is so full of malware and tracking software it isn't even funny.

If it’s been related to malware, sometimes those are blocked IP address range, which invariably catches innocent sites at the same hosting service. Otherwise, many products block sites that contain blogs or discussion groups.

When I was a contractor to the Air Force they simply said that the site had chat or bulletin board posting capabilities and was therefore a restricted site.

I've never gotten any malware from FR.

When I was a contractor to the Air Force they simply said that the site had chat or bulletin board posting capabilities and was therefore a restricted site. I'm currently an Air Force contractor and I recall it being blocked for a very brief period of time back around 1995 or so, then allowed to return without posting capabilities. Now, at least where I work, there are both reading and posting access. It's hard to see why they would block it now, given the wide-open access to YouTube and social networking sites.

Free Republic is completely against the indoctrination of homo’s into our armed forces.
Perhaps this is a reason?
To: US Navy Vet
Because Freerepublic.com is not the Huffington Post or the like. /s =.=

Free Republic is completely against the indoctrination of homos into our armed forces. It's also sometimes fairly emphatic in its criticism of the Commander in Chief and the First Lady. I know it doesn't happen that often, but...

Very interesting that a site that did not exist could be blocked.
To: US Navy Vet
I've never had a problem accessing FR from military bases overseas, except for very briefly in '07 when Bill O'Reilly made a bunch of noise about FR being racist.
The DoD blocked access for a day or two, but enough of us requested explanations that they restored it.
