Rep. Michele Bachmann kicked off her presidential campaign on Monday in Waterloo, Iowa, and in one interview surrounding the official event she promised to mimic the spirit of Waterloo's own John Wayne.
The only problem, as one eagle-eyed reader notes: Waterloo's John Wayne was not the beloved movie star, but rather John Wayne Gacy, the serial killer.
Mrs. Bachmann grew up in Waterloo, and used the town as the backdrop for her campaign announcement, where she told Fox News: "Well what I want them to know is just like, John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa. That's the kind of spirit that I have, too."
(Someone has already posted the clip to YouTube under the name BachmannLovesGacy) John Wayne, the movie legend, is in fact from Iowa and the John Wayne birthplace is a celebrated landmark only it's in Winterset, which is a nearly three hour drive away from Waterloo. Gacy, though, had his first taste of the criminal life in Waterloo, where he lived for a short time, and where he had his first criminal conviction for an attempted homosexual assault, which landed him in prison for 18 months. He would move back to Illinois, where his killing spree started, and lasted about six years. In 1980 he was convicted on 33 counts of murder, and was executed in 1994.

To quote Larry the Cable guy: “I don’t care who ya are, that’s funny right there.”
So we don’t need to bother to vote?
No he’s right. You have to back to the singularity before the big bang to make the connection, but they share quantum entanglement so he’s right....
(Any excuse to avoid admitting the candidate done effed’ up I guess)
I like Bachmann but she is making me nervous.
That is understandable. A solid roll out was needed in light of tomorrow’s events.
Damned typo...I left off the "e"; but still and all, it wasn't as bad as what Bachmann did to herself today. LOL
It's why I hide here on FR instead of saying anything in the real world ;-)
"He was a humble man, with much to be humble about."
Cheers!
Bachmann has been playing up that she’s from Waterloo. So from that standpoint it is pretty bad.
It’s like someone from Atlanta talking about being from the same town as The Allman Brothers Band. Across the USA, people might only know the ABB as a Georgia (or even just a southern) band. But people from the state know they’re a Macon band—no connection to Atlanta at all.
People from an area know who the local celebs are (and who isn’t). She either looks stupid here, or like she was lying about her Waterloo connection to pick up support.
At least she didn’t mention Capt. Kirk.
You’re getting hysterical. Seriously.
Well aren’t you the lucky one, because we’re not all smart enough to know that a stupid story about John Wayne’s birthplace is all that important.
Good God man, you don’t seriously think getting the Allman Brothers hometown wrong would matter as to who should become president???
And I thought worrying about JW’s birthplace was ridiculous!
If anything, I think MB was foolish to start talking about John Wayne’s America. This whole topic is silly.
That's true, and I've actually driven around the area. But as a matter of historical metaphor, no one ever says, "This might just turn out to be his 'Plancenoit'!"
Well, wherever it was, we were darned lucky to have had the Duke of Ellington on our side...
The problem is that she either knew his actual birthplace and intentionally lied to curry political favor, or she is.... Nevermind. No point.
For the record it is Marion ROBERT Morrison.
Not for someone from outside the area. But for someone from the area, who is using the band as a political prop, then yea it makes you look pretty dense.
It would be like someone from Atlanta talking about being from the same town as Martin Luther.
I do think the “John Wayne’s America” theme is a loser—big time. I don’t think the Tea Part is about turning back the clock as much as it is about getting back to limited government and the Constitution. I’m not sure how either of those go with John Wayne.
But thanks for catching it, because I am now wearing my glasses.
I agree with you. It’s a stupid story that nobody but some FR’s care about.
Are you saying that it’s fine for candidates to lie to win brownie points? Because there’s no way in hell she doesn’t know that one of the most famous actors in the world, an American Icon, was not born in her ‘hometown.’ Come on. Give me a break.
If we excuse that we can’t very well bitch about anything Obama lies about either so which will it be?
No, it's much worse. You do get an E for Effort, I guess, but your attempt at slick sophistry and misdirection just didn't quite cut it...
Go here then select FAQ in the left column, then scroll down to the question "What was John Wayne's birth name?".
