Rep. Michele Bachmann kicked off her presidential campaign on Monday in Waterloo, Iowa, and in one interview surrounding the official event she promised to mimic the spirit of Waterloo's own John Wayne.
The only problem, as one eagle-eyed reader notes: Waterloo's John Wayne was not the beloved movie star, but rather John Wayne Gacy, the serial killer.
Mrs. Bachmann grew up in Waterloo, and used the town as the backdrop for her campaign announcement, where she told Fox News: "Well what I want them to know is just like, John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa. That's the kind of spirit that I have, too."
(Someone has already posted the clip to YouTube under the name BachmannLovesGacy) John Wayne, the movie legend, is in fact from Iowa and the John Wayne birthplace is a celebrated landmark only it's in Winterset, which is a nearly three hour drive away from Waterloo. Gacy, though, had his first taste of the criminal life in Waterloo, where he lived for a short time, and where he had his first criminal conviction for an attempted homosexual assault, which landed him in prison for 18 months. He would move back to Illinois, where his killing spree started, and lasted about six years. In 1980 he was convicted on 33 counts of murder, and was executed in 1994.

I don’t care whether you are liberal or conservative, this is a pretty funny gaffe. How stupid could her staff be? And I say this as someone who is really impressed with her and hopes she goes far in politics.
Kick off the campaign in the “Spirit of John Wayne Gacy” — that is funny.
I think that all of the gaffes are due to politicians hiring graduates who have been promoted through the U.S. school system that doesn’t teach anything.
Can’t we find anyone who knows what they are talking about?

Flashback: “...uuhhh, Ottawa...uh...Iowa..” or some such rot by Dear Leader...LOL
Her being from Waterloo, you’d think she’d know better...
As a life-long conservative with a (l)libertarian bent, I have NEVER understood support for Bachmann.
Anyone who thinks she has a chance in this election cycle does not understand American politics IMHO.
I can't imagine a scenario where I would vote for her.
Cant we find anyone who knows what they are talking about?”
How about Sarah? And then Rove and all the other “experts” think she doesn’t have it together to run because she hasn’t hired the normal staff of incompetents like the other have.
Maybe Chris Wallace should revisit his apology on the use of the word flake.
This stupid comment from her is going to make for some real laughable headlines.
It is going viral..for sure.
At least she didn’t suggest that while in Waterloo, she’d like to visit the field where Napoleon lost that big battle.
Well that’s it, her campaign is over.
Meanwhile, Barack Hussein “All 57 States” Obama continues to get a pass.
>>> .... John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa. That’s the kind of spirit that I have, too.”
This statement sold me. Let Michele Bachmann be in charge of the death panel.
Depends on how long she lived there. Pretty important speech, the campaign kick-off speech, and she gets an “F” due to no fact checking. Hate that, I’d like to see her do well but that is a pretty poor performance. Did not see the speech, it may have been grade “A” but this will be the only thing reported for awhile.
Well, until Sarah declares, I’m not worried about her. Michelle is running.
Yep, and I’m a Michelle fan after Sarah Palin; but, this gaffe is ridiculous.
Yep, bad mistake, but she didn’t say she praised Gacy
for Pete’s sake.
Oh well, lets see. We haven’t got a good one in or out of the race. Hope this changes.
Yes, I had a good laugh with this one; however I blame her staff. I hope someone is not doing this deliberately to her.
She needs to avoid extemporaneous speech on any historical material she is not sure of. If a staffer gave her that, fire him.
