Perry spoke Sunday at Koch brothers’ gathering near Vail

Gov. Rick Perry spoke Sunday at a summit hosted by the billionaire Koch brothers near Vail, Colorado.

Perry spokesman....described the Colorado summit as a “private gathering of business leaders” and said it was not related to a possible presidential campaign.

“This was an opportunity to talk about the economic success in Texas,” Miner said, adding that it was no different than other speeches Perry gives touting the Texas job record.

Charles and David Koch of Koch Industries, an energy conglomerate based in Kansas, are among the country’s leading financial backers of conservative candidates and causes.

The Denver Post has more on the gathering: “The meetings are organized by two of the nation’s most powerful conservative political donors, Charles and David Koch of the privately held energy giant Koch Industries. Their brother, William Koch , who on Saturday paid $2 million at a Denver auction for a tintype image of Billy the Kid, also is a conservative political donor, but he does not participate in his brothers’ activities. The guest list is kept secret, and organizers won’t say where the four-day retreat is being held beyond describing it as in the Vail area. … On Friday, a spokeswoman for Koch Industries said, ‘The purpose of this conference is to develop support for the kind of free-market policies and initiatives that can get our country back on the path to economic prosperity and sustained job creation.’”

It’s not entirely clear how Perry got to Colorado, but a plane owned by aircraft dealer Goldsmith Team LLC flew from Aspen to Georgetown on Sunday, flight records show.

...Goldsmith made more than $25,000 worth of in-kind contributions to Perry’s re-election campaign. And now that the legislative session and veto period are over, Perry and other state officials can again accept in-kind contributions.

Sheriff’s deputy Neiburger would not say whether this was the first time protesters had disrupted the Koch Brothers meetings, but up until last year and a series of articles by Lee Fang of Think Progress, they had not been well-publicized.

Bob Edgar, the President of Common Cause, said in a brief interview that he was happy with the turnout and the outcome. I asked him if this was evidence of a more aggressive organization. “Keep watching,” he said." -- California Student Sustainability Coalition

Protesters came from a variety of leftwing groups, including the antiwar Code Pink and public sector worker unions.

Friday’s lead story by Stephanie Strom focused on an I.R.S. crackdown on politically motivated non-profits established by wealthy investors like the libertarian Koch brothers, and the left-wing George Soros: “I.R.S. Sets Sights On Donors Gifts That Push Policy - Says Tax May Be Owed – Advocacy Groups Draw Scrutiny – A Rare Use of a Provision.”

Strom focused mainly on the Koch brothers of the right, and an accompanying photo caption claimed that while David Koch gave to libertarian causes, the left-wing Soros merely “donated millions to other causes.”..............[Soros, nonpartisan?]

On November 6, 1986, he signed into law the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986, [PUB L 99-603]. In so doing, he set a precedent whereby the United States would not seek to deport illegal aliens, but to reward their lawbreaking by granting them full citizenship.

Thanks for the info and link. Perry's willingness to tackle vote fraud and illegal immigration speaks volumes of the man. As you say; We have to take the best of the lot, hopefully that will be a constitutional dynamo. I sense if Perry enters the race Romney and Huntsman, at least, might as well stay home.

I have no idea if this is accurate.

The Koch brothers are the richest Libertarians around and have been associated with Libertarian causes for decades, so it's accurate. They have dumped a lot of money into creating/supporting certain Tea Party-related groups which is mostly why I've been careful to jump on the Tea Party bandwagon. I'm not going to get involved with any groups that are a front for Libertarians.

Perry's biggest donor is a home builder, are you really surprised about the outcome of the bill? One of this other big donor's fortunes was made from grocery stores. Again, no surprise. There is a reason why Perry has run the gamut from supporting open borders and healthcare for poor people on both sides of the border to wasting taxpayer millions on webcams that didn't secure our borders. You always look at where the major money comes from. Bob Perry didn't donate millions of dollars to Rick Perry, he invested millions of dollars in Rick Perry.

I agree. Libertarians are not true conservatives.

Unfortunately some of the Tea Party groups the Koch brothers have funded or invested in are a bit popular on FR, so I tend not to say too much about it, other than to say it really bothers me that people aren't looking too deep into some of these groups. I agree with some things the Libertarians do, but there are other things I don't agree with, and none of us knows what the Kochs hope to gain from funding certain groups.

I have no doubt that Perry would not do anything to seriously anger his backers. They wouldn't have donated millions to Perry if he hadn't made it known that he'd support their causes.

Back in 2004, Perry gave a speech that was nearly 3 years after 9/11, where he talked about national security, but then turned around and said this:

As a nation of immigrants, the United States welcomes men and women who enter our country to better their lives and enrich our society. Travel to an urban classroom, or a citizenship ceremony in our state, and you will find new Americans, of almost every native tongue, who have descended on Texas from every corner of the world to pursue one common dream, the American Dream.

Those who want to build a wall around this nation fail to understand that while we must do everything to keep enemies out, we must never stop the immigrant dream from continuing to make its way in. Those who enter our country in good faith, and seek unlimited freedom, should be welcome whether their native roots are in Australia or Africa, South or North America, Asia or Europe, including that mountainous country called Austria.

As governor of Texas, I welcome the contributions of millions of Mexican workers who are making a better way for their families in Mexico, while building our economy in Texas. And as the first statewide official to endorse NAFTA in the early 90’s, I welcome not only the contributions that Mexican workers make to our economy, but the expanded trade that can create opportunities north and south of our border.

Oh, and we can't forget that Perry is a big fan of LULAC as well.

The scary thing to me is that this is typical Rick Perry and has been for the better part of the last decade, and yet many people outside the state believe he's changed his stripes. They don't stop and think what it means when your biggest donor is a home builder who has spent millions campaigning for you.

You always look at where the major money comes from. Bob Perry didn't donate millions of dollars to Rick Perry, he invested millions of dollars in Rick Perry.

Perry's going to have a lot of explaining to do, when he's old and gray and his English-speaking neighbors are being discriminated against and can't get jobs because LULAC and LaRaza are pressuring employers not to hire anyone who isn't bilingue -- i.e. white Texans who flunk Johnny Mata's personal-political ("the personal is political") "too gringo for me" test.

One of Johnny Mata's LULAC responsibilities is to "open up" jobs at e.g. offshore supply firms -- which means, he goes to their managements and offers to make trouble for their client companies (operating companies like Devon and Shell and Anadarko Petroleum) through OSHA and EEOC if the target firm doesn't fire some white guys and hire nonqualified Hispanics in their places. Had a guy working on my attic a/c once who had had that happen to him. Hope he got back on someplace.

As for the business of "investing" in Rick Perry, that's almost a direct quote from a Houston Chronicle article five years ago. When KBH was first thinking about running for governor, she met with a group of Texas money men (who included Bo Pilgrim, one or more of the Tysons, Trammel Crow and a couple of other homebuilders -- presumably including Bob Perry) one of whom told her bluntly, "I've got good money invested in Rick Perry and I intend to get my money's worth." Just like that, in quotes, the story apparently coming from Kay herself, or a close aide who was close enough to be in the room when all this grown-up talk was laid on Kay, telling her to get back up to DC and be a good little senator. The point being that these guys really are that arrogant.

The problem is that the ID would be similar to the Mexican matricula consular that so annoyed conservatives a few years ago since the Mexican government was intermeddling in relations between illegal immigrants and agencies of the U.S. Government, state government, and private institutions like banks and consumer businesses. The difference would be that the ID Perry is talking about would be given out to illegal immigrants for the purpose of "washing" them and opening a doorway to citizenship and voting -- call it "side-door McShamnesty".

I call it bracero-to-votero, from illegal, sub rosa status to citizenship and the vote, courtesy of Rick Perry.

Notice also that he made those comments to a Mexican nationalist and irridentist group that would have no trouble stepping on the rights of American citizens to help "their own". Those guys are selective scofflaws, full of nuestra giente this and la Raza that, when they're speaking in Spanish to Mexican fence-jumpers.

Thanks for that - didn't know that. To me, when you reach the point where you've donated millions, it is an investment.

There are far too many people from out of state who think Perry will break with his backers, when that's not the case - everything major he pushes, he does so with their approval. It's Texas politics, and it's ruthless, and people from out of state just don't get it. Perry knows if he turned on his backers, they'd work to take him down, because that's how it works here.

They let Perry play games with the sanctuary cities bill knowing full well it would not be passed.
