Amos and Andy and The Book of Mormon
The Washington Post - National ^ | June 15, 2011 | John Mark Reynolds

Posted on 06/25/2011 10:48:16 AM PDT by Saundra Duffy

The creators of the play Book of Mormon have created the Amos and Andy for the South Park set. We may laugh, but our grandchildren will shudder as decent folk do at “wits” of the last century whose favorite dance was to “jump Jim Crow.”

The parts of the Book of Mormon I have seen are as innovative as a Newsies revival and as funny as the cruel, tasteless jokes told by an inebriated coworker at a Christmas party. The difference is that the coworker might sober up in the morning, but the mindless mockery that also gave us South Park will continue.

After all, the theater establishment toasted the two with Tony’s and the insiders would never cheapen themselves by rewarding a play for picking on a minority religion loathed in the theater community or behave like decadent Romans horrified by a growing moral minority comforting the libertines by mocking the moral.

I cannot know for sure without seeing the entire play. If we assume the play a brilliant satire with PR unfortunate enough to release only the cruel and facile bits, then we are still left with two unfortunate truths about this play. First, the writers are cowards. They inflict pain and mockery on those already despised while going soft on the tired assumptions of their rich and powerful patrons. Second, in a pluralistic society they have targeted a group already misunderstood and discriminated against.

They preach polygamy, baptism for the dead, a ridiculous set of dietary laws, and that their prophet is the one true prophet, all from extrabiblical sources, the use of which is forbidden by scripture.

Don't leave out the fact that they send 52,000 missionaries out every day to tell Christians that their faith is false and the only way to salvation is through Joseph Smith's fictitious scam.

Persecuted, my butt...multi-million dollar TV and radio campaigns and thousands of internet sites demanding to be seen as Christians with their anti-Christian doctrine...and they whine about a handful of Christians posting the truth on FR.

Photobucket

The MittBots are invading again.

They shoot Mormons, don't they?

No, but mormons shot defenseless men, women and children in the past didn't they.

What an entrance after your little hiatus SD. And start right off the bat with the victim card.

>>Too bad one of the biggest, if not the biggest, impediments to getting out the actual truth is organized religion.<<

Yes, but the internet has completely trumped that.

Did you know that over a century ago as we entered the “age of enlightenment” that many lesser religions fell by the wayside as it became easier and easier to disprove any of their quantifiable claims. Many anti-Christians believed the same would eventually happen to Christianity and that anticipation of “future proof” was all the “proof” they needed to convince them Christianity was a hoax.

Problem was, as science had to keep changing it’s hypotheses and theories while the Christian bible became more in harmony with what we “knew” (scientists used to be uniformitarianist while Christians were catastrophists, but now everyone is catastrophist). Even the discovery of DNA supports the wording of the bible.

And Christianity welcomes the light of day. Mormonism, on the other hand, must constantly change its scriptures, include secret ceremonies, and otherwise try to discredit those who often are guilty of nothing more than spreading the historic truth of the foundation and teachings of Mormonism.

Islam? Well, here we get into forced conversion to this day and a dependence on rampant ignorance. But I digress.

Matt and Trey pick on everyone. Not everyone can handle it. When you follow a “prophet” like John Smith, such as he is, you better have some thick skin.

I highly recommend the book “Mama, Mormonism and Me”.

Did you know that Mormons used to kill their own children if they tried to leave the church. It was a form of blood atonement.

Note: The Mormon Church is more interested in shopping malls and cattle ranches than in helping the poor. By its own admission, the Mormon Church gave $60,000,000 in humanitarian aid last year. It is spending 15 times that for shopping malls.

In Jan. 2006, from the Church PR department, (Deseret News Publishing Company): Edgley said, “that since 1984, the LDS Church has donated nearly $750 million in cash and goods to people in need in more than 150 countries.” That averages to 37.5 million per year or about $3-$4 per Mormon member went to the poor. The total of $750 million in 22 years spent in cash in goods to people in need is less than HALF what the church is spending on these malls. Less than half!! The Mormon church is spending less than 1% of its income to help the poor. Is the Mormon church really a charitable organization?

Oh, and people live on the sun and on the moon. In fact, the ones on the moon dress like quakers.

Speaking of quantifiable claims being debunked by science. :-D

Well, they just haven't found the evidence yet -just like they haven't found the evidence for the nephites here in the americas.

Technically that’s not what defines a 401(C)(3) organization. Virtually any religious organization qualifies for that. Arguably, the most efficient bona-fide Christian charity organization isn’t even, by its own description, a church: it’s the Salvation Army. Their new slogan “doing the most good” is not bluster when viewed from that angle. One can strenuously disagree with Mormon theology without setting up armadas of straw men to point up pointless differences between it and various other bodies that more or less truly or falsely call themselves Christian.

If they aren’t anti-Mormonism, they are ignorant of their own Bible or ignorant of Mormon doctrine, for neither agree with each other

IMHO, the left is simply indulging its hatred of Christianity by picking on a group that they know they can get by with it.

It’s the whole, “When they came for the Jews” thing.

We know Mormons are not traditional Christians, but the left doesn’t view it like that. They worship Jesus, they are a target. The libs get their jollies off it.

Oh, Sandy. If you don’t get the difference between anti-moron (which there is not) and anti-moronISM, it is you who has the problem.
Tell me this, for over 150 years morons did not want to be called Christian and mormonISM did not want to be referred as Christianity but in the last few years mormons have demand to be called Christian and mormonISM has demanded to be called Christianity.
Why?

Has a really good comparison:

Basic similarities between the Islamic and Mormon faiths include, but are not limited to:

A founding prophet who received visits from an angel, leading to revelation of a book of scripture;

An emphasis upon family, and the family unit as the foundation for religious life and the transmission of values; Insistence that their religion is a complete way of life, meant to directly influence every facet of existence;

A belief that theirs constitutes the one and only completely true religion on the earth today;

Belief that good deeds are required for salvation just as much as faith;

Assertions that modern Christianity does not conform to the original religion taught by Jesus Christ;

Belief that the text of the Bible, as presently constituted, has been adulterated from its original form;

Rejection of the Christian doctrines of Original Sin and the Trinity;

Strong emphasis upon education, both in the secular and religious arenas;

Belief in fasting during specified periods of time;

Incorporation of a sacred ritual of ablution, though each religion's rite differs in form, frequency and purpose;

Belief that their faith represents the genuine, original religion of Adam, and of all true prophets thereafter;

Prohibition of alcoholic beverages and gambling, as well as homosexuality and bisexuality;

Belief that one's marriage can potentially continue into the next life, if one is faithful to the religion;

Belief in varying degrees of reward and punishment in the hereafter, depending upon one's performance in this life;

Special reverence for, though not worship of, their founding prophet;

Emphasis upon charitable giving, and helping the downtrodden;

An active interest in proselytizing nonbelievers;

Strong emphasis upon chastity, including modesty in dress; and

A clergy drawn from the laity, without necessarily requiring collegiate or seminary training.

No I am not saying mormonISM is terrorism.

No LDS ping list remains as far as I can determine. The Mormons have pretty much either been banned or banned themselves from FR. So the anti Mormons can rip and tear to their hearts’ desire.

Mormon Translation Service Intervention:

[translate from mormonspeak to English - select option #3]

"So many mormons have been zotted for dissing members of FreeRepublic,
poking the founder in the eye, supporting RINOmney and hiding behind
caucus threads to attack Christians that there isn't much of a ping
list left. So Christians can post the truth from Mormon sources and
the Bible without the constant whining that used to exist here."
