The creators of the play Book of Mormon have created the Amos and Andy for the South Park set. We may laugh, but our grandchildren will shudder as decent folk do at wits of the last century whose favorite dance was to jump Jim Crow.
The parts of the Book of Mormon I have seen are as innovative as a Newsies revival and as funny as the cruel, tasteless jokes told by an inebriated coworker at a Christmas party. The difference is that the coworker might sober up in the morning, but the mindless mockery that also gave us South Park will continue.
After all, the theater establishment toasted the two with Tonys and the insiders would never cheapen themselves by rewarding a play for picking on a minority religion loathed in the theater community or behave like decadent Romans horrified by a growing moral minority comforting the libertines by mocking the moral.
I cannot know for sure without seeing the entire play. If we assume the play a brilliant satire with PR unfortunate enough to release only the cruel and facile bits, then we are still left with two unfortunate truths about this play. First, the writers are cowards. They inflict pain and mockery on those already despised while going soft on the tired assumptions of their rich and powerful patrons. Second, in a pluralistic society they have targeted a group already misunderstood and discriminated against.

"You see some classes of the human family that are black, uncouth, uncomely, disagreeable and low in their habits, wild, and seemingly deprived of nearly all the blessings of the intelligence that is generally bestowed upon mankind.
The first man that committed the odious crime of killing one of his brethren will be cursed the longest of any one of the children of Adam. Cain slew his brother. Cain might have been killed, and that would have put a termination to that line of human beings.
This was not to be, and the Lord put a mark upon him, which is the flat nose and black skin. Trace mankind down to after the flood, and then another curse is pronounced upon the same race--that they should be the 'servant of servants', and they will be, until that curse is removed."
Brigham Young-President and second 'Prophet' of the Mormon Church, 1844-1877- Extract from Journal of Discourses.
Here are two examples from their 'other testament', the Book of Mormon.
2 Nephi 5: 21 'And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people, the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them.'
Alma 3: 6 'And the skins of the Lamanites were dark, according to the mark which was set upon their fathers, which was a curse upon them because of their transgression and their rebellion against their brethren, who consisted of Nephi, Jacob and Joseph, and Sam, who were just and holy men.'
August 27, 1954 in an address at Brigham Young University (BYU), Mormon Elder, Mark E Peterson, in speaking to a convention of teachers of religion at the college level, said: "The discussion on civil rights, especially over the last 20 years, has drawn some very sharp lines. It has blinded the thinking of some of our own people, I believe. They have allowed their political affiliations to color their thinking to some extent.I think I have read enough to give you an idea of what the Negro is after." "He is not just seeking the opportunity of sitting down in a cafe where white people eat. He isn't just trying to ride on the same streetcar or the same Pullman car with white people. It isn't that he just desires to go to the same theater as the white people. From this, and other interviews I have read, it appears that the Negro seeks absorption with the white race. He will not be satisfied until he achieves it by intermarriage." "That is his objective and we must face it. We must not allow our feelings to carry us away, nor must we feel so sorry for Negroes that we will open our arms and embrace them with everything we have. Remember the little statement that we used to say about sin, 'First we pity, then endure, then embrace'...." (Rosa Parks would have probably told Petersen under which wheel of the bus he should go sit.)
1967, (then) Mormon President Ezra Taft Benson said, "The Communist program for revolution in America has been in progress for many years and is far advanced. First of all, we must not place the blame upon Negroes. They are merely the unfortunate group that has been selected by professional Communist agitators to be used as the primary source of cannon fodder."
We are told that on June 8, 1978, it was 'revealed' to the then president, Spencer Kimball, that people of color could now gain entry into the priesthood. According to the church, Kimball spent many long hours petitioning God, begging him to give worthy black people the priesthood. God finally relented.
Sometime before the 'revelation' came to chief 'Prophet' Spencer Kimball in June 1978, General Authority, Bruce R McConkie had said:
"The Blacks are denied the Priesthood; under no circumstances can they hold this delegation of authority from the Almighty.
The Negroes are not equal with other races where the receipt of certain blessings are concerned, particularly the priesthood and the temple blessings that flow there from, but this inequality is not of man's origin, it is the Lord's doings."
(Mormon Doctrine, pp. 526-527).
When Mormon 'Apostle' Mark E Petersen spoke on 'Race Problems- As they affect the Church' at the BYU campus in 1954, the following was also said:
"...if the negro accepts the gospel with real, sincere faith, and is really converted, to give him the blessings of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost, he can and will enter the celestial kingdom. He will go there as a servant, but he will get celestial glory."
When Mormon 'Prophet' and second President of the Church, Brigham Young, spoke in 1863 the following was also said:
"Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God is death on the spot. This will always be so."
(Journal of Discourses, Vo. 10, p. 110)

DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
SECTION 71
Revelation given to Joseph Smith the Prophet and Sidney Rigdon, at Hiram, Ohio, December 1, 1831. HC 1: 238239. The Prophet had continued to translate the Bible with Sidney Rigdon as his scribe until this revelation was received, at which time it was temporarily laid aside so as to enable them to fulfill the instruction given herein. The brethren were to go forth to preach in order to allay the unfriendly feelings that had developed against the Church as a result of the publication of some newspaper articles by Ezra Booth, who had apostatized.
14, Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon are sent forth to proclaim the gospel; 511, Enemies of the saints shall be confounded.
1 Behold, thus saith the Lord unto you my servants Joseph Smith, Jun., and Sidney Rigdon, that the time has verily come that it is necessary and expedient in me that you should open your mouths in proclaiming my gospel, the things of the kingdom, expounding the mysteries thereof out of the scriptures, according to that portion of Spirit and power which shall be given unto you, even as I will.
2 Verily I say unto you, proclaim unto the world in the regions round about, and in the church also, for the space of a season, even until it shall be made known unto you.
3 Verily this is a mission for a season, which I give unto you.
4 Wherefore, labor ye in my vineyard. Call upon the inhabitants of the earth, and bear record, and prepare the way for the commandments and revelations which are to come.
5 Now, behold this is wisdom; whoso readeth, let him understand and receive also;
6 For unto him that receiveth it shall be given more abundantly, even power.
7 Wherefore, confound your enemies; call upon them to meet you both in public and in private; and inasmuch as ye are faithful their shame shall be made manifest.
8 Wherefore, let them bring forth their strong reasons against the Lord.
9 Verily, thus saith the Lord unto youthere is no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper;
10 And if any man lift his voice against you he shall be confounded in mine own due time.
11 Wherefore, keep my commandments; they are true and faithful. Even so. Amen.

THE
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS SECTION 132
5157, Emma Smith is counseled (commanded) to be faithful and true; 5866, Laws governing the plurality of wives are set forth.
51 Verily, I say unto you: A commandment I give unto mine handmaid, Emma Smith, your wife, whom I have given unto you, that she stay herself and partake not of that which I commanded you to offer unto her; for I did it, saith the Lord, to aprove you all, as I did Abraham, and that I might require an offering at your hand, by covenant and sacrifice.
52 And let mine handmaid, Emma Smith, areceive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph, and who are virtuous and pure before me; and those who are not pure, and have said they were pure, shall be destroyed, saith the Lord God.
53 For I am the Lord thy God, and ye shall obey my voice; and I give unto my servant Joseph that he shall be made ruler over many things; for he hath been afaithful over a few things, and from henceforth I will strengthen him.
55 But if she will not abide this commandment, then shall my servant Joseph do all things for her, even as he hath said; and I will bless him and multiply him and give unto him an ahundredfold in this world, of fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, houses and lands, wives and children, and crowns of beternal lives in the eternal worlds.

It's is STILL MORMON scripture!!
REAL mormons actually FOLLOW it!
Fearful ones (SLC branch) IGNORE their GOD and OBEY the All Powerful US government!
Yeah...
We've heard THAT before!
MORMONs rely on FEELINGS instead of GOD's word.
But your 'faith' is in a CON man, who STARTED the HERESY of MORMONism.
Speaking of D&C's....
Are you STILL eating meat, even though your GOD, thru an LDS 'prophet', tells you NOT to do so in warm weather??
I guess the rest of us get the virtual DANITE treatment?
Yes, the BIBLE does 'testify' about the False Christs and False prophets that will be appearing and deceiving many.
If you ever get an answer that is actually an answer let the rest of us know.
I present historical fact:
Here's what mormonISM is founded on:
Joseph Smith published a newspaper article in his Mormon Newspaper in Independence, Missouri in 1832 wherein he wrote, "I have consecrated the riches of the gentiles unto my people who are of the House of Isreal."
In 1838, Joseph Smith was arrested for Treason against the United States.
Between 1842 and 1844, Joseph Smith:
a. Proclaimed himself "King of Zion", which he claimed held dominion over the United States
b. Appointed Brigham Young as the new Mormon "President of the United States"
c. Appointed other church leaders in his secret "Council of Fifty" as Governors of the various states and territories
d. Began forming his "Nauvoo Legion", which he claimed would be a "100,000 man militia" to be used to overthrow the US Government with military force (this is where all of the resurgent Mormon militias of the 1880's and 1890's came from, (like the Viper Militia and the Michigan Militia)
e. Inducted himself into the US military as "Lieutenant General" even though he had no prior military experience, and began wearing a military uniform
f. Began legitimizing polygamy by formally announcing his "doctrine of polygamy"
g. Formally announced his "Doctrine of the Constitution Versus the Law", which taught that Mormonism was the law of the land, which superseded America Law)
h. Formally created his new "Melchizedek Priesthood", which made all Mormons superior to "Christians" and made them "not-subject" to the man-made Judeo-Christian laws of America, or the Laws of Moses (10-commandements). Smith's new superior priesthood (superior to the older "Aaronic Priesthood"), made all Mormon males "man-Gods" in their own right who now "held the keys" to circumvent the Christian laws of Moses and the Judeo-Christian laws of America
And you reply:
I am saying this: Your response has to do with what, on the historical evidence of the foundation of mormonISM which I presented in rebuttal to your claim?
Well, begging your pardon but what are the “Doctrine And Covenants” and the “Pearl Of Great Price,” then, if not books? I still have them, you know.
I’m something of a bibliophile, can’t bear to get rid of books, even ones I don’t particularly care for. Still have the “Bhagavad Ghita,” too. That was handed to me back in my wilder days, at a welcome center in California. Very nice, hardcover and thick, several sections of color plates.
“...and I can discern a natural man when I read one mocking my faith!”
Resty, dear Resty. After all these years, you haven’t been able to discern that Joseph Smith was
documented to be a horndog, adulterer, charlatan, fraud and shyster. If that isn’t a “natural man”
and you can’t discern him as such, I think your “discerner” needs to be re-calibrated.
Mormonism stole its Temple rituals from the Masons - not by divine revelation. Sounds “natural” to me.
Mormonism claims to have “restored” crucial things the early Church lost like:
... magic underwear!
... multiple levels of heaven!
... God running a travel agency that sent Jesus Christ to America!
... Early civilizations from “coast to coast in America” with not a single metal object, foundation or cemetary!
... Millions of gods!
... The complete “Do-it-yourself God Kit” for all males!
... Celestial Sex!
... A Mother God!
... Eternal Pregnancy!
In other words, all “natural” desires of fallen men in a religion that promises to give them what
their lusts want - just like the Muslim 72 virgins.
And yet, Resty, after all these years, you apparently cannot “discern” that.
Other than going straight to the Bible and getting your discerner fixed, I’m not sure of any other path open to you. Of course, that is the path God has created for ALL of us and I hope you find it.
best,

Boy do you have that right! Thing is, any of the major religions can make that claim. Any of the major religions can claim persecution. Any of the major religions has blood on its hands. But then, Christianity and Religion are two different things. The latter is man made and seriously flawed. The former is merely a label for “one who follows Christ”. And Jesus very clearly teaches that Jesus is “God with us” and Satan is a created being.
Yet the BOM does not teach this. The BOM both changes and adds. And even the additions change the description of Jesus. There are three ages that we know of so far: The age before Israel. The age of God revealing himself to the world through Israel, and the Church age which follows the death and resurrection of Jesus. Another age follows as is hinted at in the entire bible, just as the Church age is “described” in the old testament. We’ll know it when we see it.
That said, the incoherent ramblings of Smith ain’t it. He made many false prophesies and the very Bible that you profess to accept tells us he was to be stoned for false prophesy. It says the same for Brigham Young, et al. There is so much VERIFIABLY false teaching in Mormonism that it really is amazing that, in a world of significant knowledge about creation and freedom to choose, anyone follows it.
Well, there is one reason, and it can be encapsulated in FHE: The bible is about two things: Man’s relationship with God and man’s relationship with man. Humans are communal creatures. They need the protection and fellowship of the clan. That is why there are gangs in the “family-less” inner city. It is one reason people join a religions group, a quilting group or even devote their life to the company they work for. Heck, it is what attracted a lot of young men in a desperate economy to the Nazi party. They want to be a part of something bigger then themselves, and for many reasons.
On the surface, Mormonism has this down pretty well. You are a part of a larger whole with some very unique rules. It really sets you apart. And it would be no big deal if it did not claim Christianity as its label and then preach a gospel that is not His.
You say I am unable to receive. That is because I read the bible. I cannot receive Mormonism any more than I can receive Islam. They contradict so much of scripture, but Mormonism is the worst. It claims to be Christian while denying the saving grace of God through the atoning blood of Jesus.
Forget the magic underwear, the secret ceremonies, the tradition of false prophets, the killing of their own offspring, the polygamy, the labeling negroes as the “neutral” angels. The difference between Mormons and Christianity that it all boils down to is this:
Christianity’s core that makes it unique from all man made religions is Grace. The salvation brought, to any man that will accept it, through the sacrificial death of Jesus and his resurrection as first fruits. The price is fully paid by Him. Mormonism teaches that it is a partial payment. Jesus “chipped in” with his blood and now you have to come up with the difference.
Mormonism attempts to destroy the very reason Christ came to dwell among us.
That is a problem.
Missionaries share The Book of Mormon why you would have the other books I don’t know.
I know why I had the other books because I purchased them for a small fee at the visitor center and it just added to my joy.
I could not get enough of the word of the Lord because it was answering so many of questions no longer were my religion like Swiss cheese.
As I first stated the Standard works caused the mainstream clergy to step it up and thanks to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints the Reader’s Digest version of the Bible has been increased or the mainstream would still be stuck in the snap shot of the scriptures for much of the mainstream would not be doing anything to appreciate other things of the Bible.
It is a fact if there was nothing out there for the mainstream to learn and understand more even if for the wrong reason (the right reason is too know the Lord) many could care less.
I know The Book of Mormon is true and The Book of Mormon Testifies of the Bible and this is the Lord’s Jesus Christ restored Church once again upon the earth.
Amen

Actually, Elsie posts some worthwhile stuff in post 99. That is a good start on some of the stuff I’m talking about.
