The creators of the play Book of Mormon have created the Amos and Andy for the South Park set. We may laugh, but our grandchildren will shudder as decent folk do at wits of the last century whose favorite dance was to jump Jim Crow.
The parts of the Book of Mormon I have seen are as innovative as a Newsies revival and as funny as the cruel, tasteless jokes told by an inebriated coworker at a Christmas party. The difference is that the coworker might sober up in the morning, but the mindless mockery that also gave us South Park will continue.
After all, the theater establishment toasted the two with Tonys and the insiders would never cheapen themselves by rewarding a play for picking on a minority religion loathed in the theater community or behave like decadent Romans horrified by a growing moral minority comforting the libertines by mocking the moral.
I cannot know for sure without seeing the entire play. If we assume the play a brilliant satire with PR unfortunate enough to release only the cruel and facile bits, then we are still left with two unfortunate truths about this play. First, the writers are cowards. They inflict pain and mockery on those already despised while going soft on the tired assumptions of their rich and powerful patrons. Second, in a pluralistic society they have targeted a group already misunderstood and discriminated against.

Nope I am no being LDS I am thankful to know the true Church of Jesus Christ.
...and I can discern a “natural man” when I read one mocking my faith!
1 Corinthians 2
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Really?
The 'revelation' that smith had to justify polygamy - Doctrines and covenants section 132 is still mormon canon SD, and today's mormon men expect to have more than one wife in heaven - forget that you can be replaced by your hubby SD?
So if the 'revelation' is not DOCTRINE SD - why is DC 132 still enshrined as DOCTRINE SD? Then smith taught false doctrines according to your definition SD.
Whatever. Im not going to post anymore. Bye bye and God bless.
Running away again because mormonism cannot stand the light of God's truth.
>>....seems you use the world yard stick to measrue faith instead of the Holy Ghost!<<
“Seems.”
You would be very incorrect. Not the world yardstick. the Bible. Remember, God really did give us all a brain as well as “feelings”. “Trust your feelings” is a line from Star Wars. The bible warns against it.
Acts 17: 11 - 12
Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.
Search the scriptures and you will see the gross error in the BOM as you will in the Koran.
You sound like King Herod who feared baby Jesus
svcw seems just like King Herod dwelling in ignorance unable to discern between the earthly Kingdom vs the ZION,
a mission which is refuge for those who are preparing to standing in Holy Places until the Lord Jesus Christ Returns
Doctrine and Covenants 101:22

At least the Lord and his servants will be more gracious towards many of you due to your ignorances!
“At least the Lord and his servants will be more gracious towards many of you due to your ignorances!”
Ignorant? Like believing a con-man who looks in his magic hat to read things that only he can see? Or is that naive?
Mormons as an oppressed minority? Really?
The problem with Mormonism is not that it is misunderstood. I understand it perfectly. To criticize it reasonably is not bigotry or hatred. Mormonism is so completely knowable, right down to Joe Smith’s gun battle, stone-peeping, Egyptian burial ritual gold-plate con-job that it offends the faithful Mormon to hear it one more time.
We’re not talking about a mystery far removed in time’s scope by the centuries, like the Shroud of Turin. Who knows? We’re talking about a relatively few short years in the scope of history. Practically yesterday. We’re talking about decipherable writing on the Golden Plates that don’t say what Joe Smith translated them to say. They just don’t. Deal. Step up like grown ups and answer reasonable questions.
But that is why it is rightly mocked. It has a form of godliness that is manufactured by human effort and was conceived as a scam. Its “revelations” are utterly adjunct and useless to the problem of sin and the human condition. It does not fit the arc of God’s story of redemption. It’s Vampire Diaries for people bored with the same old-same old.
Mormonism’s origins come from the same mindset that gave us Scientology. Sure, lots of people buy into Scientology big time. They claim their moral superiority and healing powers. We know they’re kooks because we watched their beginnings. In another half-century of collective and willful amnesia, people will call those who mock Scientology for what it is, bigots. Scientology pays big bucks to control their own Narrative and story.
People today deny the Holocaust ever happened. Because it’s what they want to believe. I never thought I’d live to see it, but it’s amazing how much amnesia money can buy; what money and key influences can achieve. Mormons have depended on that same sort of amnesia to their advantage. The “poor us” routine does not come from being persecuted for righteousness’ sake. Joe Smith was no martyr, he died while the barrel of his gun was still a smokin’.
Faith is not a leap in the dark or a warm feeling, it’s a reasoning together with a present God about our human condition and His relationship with us; His goodness and our inability to be good. It’s the only real human dilemma, and it had its answer 2000 years ago.
The Book of Mormon and the Bible testify of each other
you seem to hang on to one verse which scripture is composed of thousands of verses!
I am thankful for the Book of Mormon for it has unlocked many of the passages in the Bible not only for LDS but mainstream faith as well.
I remember in the 60’s mainstream was nice and comfortable
with the neat little reader’s digest version they all settled for until the LDS became more known and than they had to really step it up and learn more of what the Bible contained.
I should know I was mainsteam in the 1960’s my conversion took place in 1982 and open my eyes up to just endless joy when reading the scriptures.
You all want to get caught up in the put downs etc and miss the greatness of all of the Lord scriptures...
find for me I am enjoying the whole loaf not just a portion!
Lay it out for us, then, restornu. Show how the Book of Mormon has unlocked Biblical passages for mainstream faith. A single example using a well-known passage will suffice.
If you sincerely want to know than read the Book of Mormon.
That is how I learn the truth.
No one could tell me I had to find out for myself.
I even told the person who gave me the Book why do you want to go backwards.
At the time I was jaded on religion.
I saw what the mainstream did “say one thing and do another”...
Was I surprise a year later when I did read it and the Spirit of the Lord witness to me!
Oh what joy for me anyway was beyond words.
Not all have that powerful of a conversion.
Peopel are known by the company they keep or the movies they like such as cruelty, rape etc.
I say: sorry resty, my Lord is Jesus Christ not Joseph Smith. I worship the Lord Jesus Christ not Joseph Smith.
pssst Everything I quoted is from lds sources, sorry you can’t abide the the information.
I befriended a Mormon missionary decades ago and read the books. He was a nice guy who was on mission to make his family happy, not because his belief or faith was all that strong. The books left me feeling as if they were an attempt at sounding religious, rather than divinely inspired.
But, if you can point out this unlocking of passages in some specific context, I’m willing to listen. Perhaps I wasn’t introduced to the books through the most advantageous individual, nice guy though he was. Still in touch with him, lives in Arizona, three kids, happily married to one wife and no longer Mormon. Not sure what denomination Christian church he attends, but he does do so.
>>you seem to hang on to one verse which scripture is composed of thousands of verses!<<
No, I was just referring to a particular verse at that time. It was a response to the point you were making.
>>I am thankful for the Book of Mormon for it has unlocked many of the passages in the Bible not only for LDS but mainstream faith as well.<<
That is absolute baloney. The BOM is a work of fiction and was probably not even written by Smith. You need to study the actual history of the teachings of the LDS organization. It is very revealing.
I’ll accept that you get endless joy reading the BOM. Many have the same “feeling” regarding the Koran. That doesn’t make it the word of God. It makes it something you want to hear. The Bible refers to it as “tickling” your ears.
