Obama Pledges $500 Million To Reinvent U.S. Manufacturing
Industry Week ^ | June 24, 2011 | Frank Andorka

Posted on 06/25/2011 6:32:57 AM PDT by Son House

AMP, as the program is called, will harness the power of public-private partnerships between universities, industry and governmental agencies in an effort to streamline innovation and bring products more quickly to market.

"We need to reinvigorate our manufacturing sector to lead the world," Obama said in the speech. "We need to do it now. Not sometime in the future. Now."

AMP will be co-chaired by Susan Hockfield, president of MIT, and Andrew Liveris, chairman, president and CEO of Dow Chemical.

"I'm enthusiastic about the spirit and content of our joint work," Hockfield said in a press release. "and I'm also very eager to build new connections with our colleagues in industry and government … with a commitment to advancing the manufacturing frontier together."

The universities involved in initially in the program are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Stanford University, the University of California-Berkeley and the University of Michigan.

Industrial partners will include Allegheny Technologies, Caterpillar, Corning, Dow Chemical, Ford, Honeywell, Intel, Johnson and Johnson, Northrop Grumman, Procter and Gamble, and Stryker.

Those recommendations of the President's Council on Science and Technology (PCAST) recommended the launching AMP and made the following recommendations as to how the Federal government could be involved:

investing in shared infrastructure such as Federal and university laboratories;

supporting the development of advanced manufacturing processes; and

participating in partnerships with industry and academia that identify and invest in broadly-applicable, precompetitive emerging technologies.

The President will also outline three compelling reasons why the United States should revitalize its manufacturing leadership: jobs, innovation and national security.

In addition to the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership, PCAST calls for changes in tax and business policies, including a permanent extension of the R&D tax credit; continued strong support for basic research in addition to the new emphasis on public-private partnerships to support pre-competitive applied research; and enhanced support for training and educational activities to create a more highly skilled workforce. PCAST also came out against the government creating a national manufacturing policy in favor of a national "innovation policy" instead.

"If we are to grow our economy, we need a strong manufacturing sector," Obama said. "These investments we make today will create jobs in current industries and spur the growth of new ones."

Obama said that Americans don't just keep pace with changes in the world, they set the pace.

"If we can regain our lead as the manufacturing force in the world, we can make this century the American century just like the last one was," he added.

The Alliance for American Manufacturing President Scott Paul released a statement that read:

"Linking manufacturers with the latest cutting-edge research at universities and federal agencies is one step in brightening the prospects for American manufacturing. But we can't stop there.

We welcome President Obama's support for public-private partnerships to develop new products, innovations, and processes for American manufacturing. Pittsburgh is the right place to make this announcement: home of a modern steel industry, great academic institutions, sophisticated research, a skilled workforce, and a strong industrial union.

America has been falling behind in manufacturing while the rest of the world aggressively supports its industry. We are playing catch-up following decades of neglect. The Advanced Manufacturing Partnership shows a lot of promise, but the effort will be futile unless our manufacturers also have a solid foundation of support for challenges like unfair trade practices, currency manipulation, developing a skilled workforce, and a more efficient infrastructure.

We believe, as we imagine you do, that a strong and vibrant manufacturing base is essential to our nation's economic stability, a strong middle class, and employment opportunities for young men and women across America. We also believe that our nation will never realize its full potential to grow the manufacturing sector of our economy without a robust strategy and aggressive set of public policies to complement private sector efforts by business and labor to maintain a globally competitive industry."

If the GOP doesn’t get off this stuck on the, America-damaging stupid of “free trade” soon, democrats are going to destroy Republicans’ chance of ever winning anything again.

America is collapsing.

The first party to actually TRY TO CHANGE THAT will lead for a generation.

Wake up GOP. “Free trade” is not a light at the end of the tunnel.

“Free trade” is the train.

“Yes, but now he can say he did something while Republicans did nothing”

-

He can. And he will.

Wake up GOP. Get in front of the pro-America parade. Don’t keep waiting, wobbling about “free trade”.

Or dems will win, on this one single issue.

Okay Barry O'DUmmie you don't need to "reinvent" anything to get manufacturing going again. All you have to do is get back to basics and do it in Five Easy Steps:
  1. Eliminate the EEOC.
  2. Eliminate OSHSA
  3. Make all states Federal Right To Work States.(use that Commerce Clause thingy)
  4. Bar the Eco-Nazis from filing frivolous and FICTITIOUS lawsuits like protecting the not so endangered Spotted Owl and some Yellow Bellied Sand Flea. Or some not so rare tiny fish normal people would use as bait for Bass Fishing.
  5. Eliminate the EPA -- and as an added bonus to help manufacturing...
    • Kill all the Lawyers
I *was* just going to put down Eliminate OSHSA five times but that would be silly. But I detest OSHSA. Their Inspectors are like the Gestapo. When one of them hits a construction site they 'order' everyone to stay put, not to even move. Then want your name, company, your position, etc, etc.

One time one OSHSA 'w'itch barged into a Job Meeting at a Construction Site I was at. She flashed her gubmint badge and acted like she was Heinrich Himmler. Two Superintendents (Old Timers) told her 'F-Off'. Then they walked out and got their men back to work. This action spread fast and she got zero cooperation. The GC was the only one who gave her some basic info on the project. She was not pleased.

Can’t dump OSHA - otherwise there’s no example we can use to bust the unions!

A better one: Repeal union immunity to RICO laws. That’s right, they have a free pass enshrined in law to conduct racketeering and extortion.

Any time the gubmint is a partner, it controls. It regulates. It redirects efforts to its own aim.

Eisenhower made a very famous speech that warned about the "Military-Industrial Complex" in 1961, but in that speech he also warned that govt. money could corrupt science. "....a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity."

From the article: "participating in partnerships with industry and academia that identify and invest in broadly-applicable, precompetitive emerging technologies."

I'll tale a wild guess and say that the emphasis is "clean energy." I think alternative energy research will produce something useful eventually, but Obama is as predictable as a broken record. He wants to strangle today's cheap energy, especially any produced here.

The common man is left to parse the President’s Words because the media won’t.

This babbage about creating job, ressurecting industry, etc. is hiding his intent to focus on only the fantastical and elusive free energy technologies. With his back hand he is killing our reliable sources of energy, Coal and oil, before his fantasy industries are in place.

Megalomania is a word that comes to mind.

You got that right. But I also believe that in insisting on his fanatical programs, he is hurting the economy, while promoting conventional energy development in places like Brazil.

I hope the voters have enough sense to respond appropriately, but I also hope the GOP does not nominate Obama Light (Romney says he believes humans are causing global warmimg).

Oh! I’ve got an idea for a really catchy name that I bet will catch on. Let's call it National Socialism, Nazism, or just Nazi for short.

Bingo! It's amazing that so few see the parallels.

I met a Holocaust survivor at the Astrohall gun show in 1993, he was arming himself to the teeth.

He was the first person I ever heard say the Clinton's and the dems were taking this country into Nazism not communism as everyone else believed.

Somewhere around late 1998 early 1999 the Clinton's started their “Third Way” BS that there needed to be a third way of doing business. Capitalism just couldn't work anymore. Business and govt needed to work together.

The same time the Clinton's and that idiot Tony Blair are telling everyone capitalism is a failure, the terrorist are planning the 9/11 terrorist attack, which was an attack against the US and world economy.

I don't know about you, but when it comes to the Clinton's I don't believe in coincidence.

The “Third Way” BS was in fact Hillary kicking off her campaign for president in 2004.

The Clinton's had what was called a 20 year plan. Bill Clinton would be president for 8 years, 4 years for another president, then Hillary would be president for 8 years.

For there to be a 20 year plan, not only did the Clinton's have to make sure Gore didn't get elected, they had to come up with a plan to bring down a sitting president.

Low and behold, OBL released a tape lamenting the fact the 9/11 attack didn't bring down the president, and in fact he was reelected.

The Muslims and Nazis have been thick as thieves for over 70 years.

Zippo is a commie to the bone, Hillary is the Nazi.

The fact Zippo the commie is pushing for Nazism, tells me Hillary is going for the presidency in 2013.

Zippo is going to be forced out, and of course they intend to blame it all on Right Wing extremist, White Separatist, KKK, Neo-Nazies, White Republican Racism.

It also tells me they intend to completely crash the economy.

They are setting up race riots, crashed economy, and more than likely there will be terrorist attacks thrown in with it.

They are recreating the conditions in 1920’-1930’s Germany.

To me, too. All big companies, all doing well. Those companies do NOT need a handout, and all are already well into "partnerships" with engineering academia. Further, most are highly competitive in that they create and guard a significant amount of "trade secret" innovation.
