The New York gay marriage bill introduced by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo needs only one more yea vote from a Republican senator to pass. If that vote materializes, New York would become the sixth and most populous state to allow same-sex marriage.
President Obama received mixed reviews after speaking Thursday night to supporters of the bill at a Democratic fundraiser in New York City. More than 600 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people paid $1,250 each to attend the gala.
The president's critics argue that although he said he supports equal rights for gays and lesbians, he won't come right out and support same-sex marriage.
LZ Granderson, an openly gay journalist for ESPN and CNN, said he wanted to be mad at Obama (like some of those who heckled the president during his speech), but ultimately he understood that now was not the time for the president to publicly support the redefinition of marriage.
Granderson wrote on CNN that "as inspiring as it would have been to hear the president say he supports marriage equality, Thursday night simply was not the right time."
"And it won't be tomorrow, or even next week," he continued. "That's not a defeatist attitude wrapped in dogmatism, but rather the depressing voice of pragmatism."
Daily Beast writer Nancy Goldstein was less forgiving in her piece Friday that carried the headline "Obamas Gay Marriage Wimp-Out" and concluded: "If Thursday nights performance is any indication, this president, left to his own devices and with a pocketful of LGBT checks, does not appear to share our sense of urgency."

Whatever happens, let’s let them know what we think:
Here’s what I never understand.
We’re told that homosexual marriage and “gay” issues in general are the civil rights battle of our time.
If this is the civil rights battle of our time, why are so few mainstream politicians on board supporting homosexual marriage?
In the civil rights movement of the ‘50s and ‘60s, many mainstream politicians, including many Republicans (which surprises liberals today, but facts are stubborn things), supported the civil rights movement, and Congress passed major civil rights laws.
But today, this liberal president is afraid to say he supports same-sex marriage.
During the civil rights movement, while there was stiff opposition, esp. among southern Democrats, many mainstream politicians were openly in support of the movement. But today’s movement for homosexual marriage does not have such support. In fact, given the silence, I’m sure many politicos wish the issue would go away.
While a liberal state such as New York may pass a law on homosexual marriage, where’s the leadership among liberals in Washington on this issue? Why are they afraid to proclaim their support, if this is the civil rights battle of this generation, and liberals tell us we want to be on the right side of history and all that???????
The compromises they’re making today are pretty much a sign that it’s a done deal unless someone backs out at the last minute. Don’t see that happening.
Any homosexual marriage bill — even with so-called religious protections — will be a disaster!
If the bill passes, the homosexual agenda will grow like cancer. Liberal bureaucrats, lawyers and judges will chip away at the faith protections. Churches will be threatened with lawsuits and cave in at the slightest opportunity.
We can only hope and pray that it fails. God willing.
God forbid, We The People be “allowed” to vote on this. Even so, some judge would overturn it any way.
The fix is in. If they wanted to kill it they wouldn’t have brought it to the floor. The filthy stinking sodomites have bought off enough senators to get this to pass. Now the sodomites and their allies in the media will crow and dance with their perversion in your face and use the deviants in New Yawk to force the immorality in other states. America is dead.
No, basically that's the depressing voice of cowardice.
Obama is afraid to come right out for gay marriage. He is scared that black support will erode if he does.
Excellent post!
I just want to add that the left is USING Black people, by pulling out the race card, and comparing homosexual “marriage” with interracial marriage, but yet the majority of Black people voted AGAINST same-sex “marriage” in CA.
Also, the video that NYer posted yesterday shows so many Black folks vehemently against homosexual “marriage,” including calling it an abomination!!!!
who is the weak link?
the la times is protecting someone.
Keep praying!
NY Dem = Marx
NY Republican = Trotsky
EXACTLY my thinking. You don’t ask for more protection for “religion” in the bill if you are going to vote “no” and know the Bill isn’t going to pass.
Sounds to me like it’s going to pass.
Not only that, MY doesn’t require residency for marriage. If it passes they will be flooded.
C’mon GOP, show us there’s actually a difference between the two parties in New York State!

Amen!!!!!!
The question is why are there any GOP state senators
in favor of destroying society?
I have differences with you on some issues but not on
this one. G-d help us all.
Hasn’t this been the news for over a week now? I think if they had the votes, it would have passed by now.
It takes a while to buy off people in back room deals. If the vote is going to the floor, it is going to pass. The fix is in.
Has anyone read the religious “exemptions?” You apparently have to be a “religious corporation” to be exempt from recognizing this abominable construct. And the exemptions amendment is a whole, any part of it struck down by an activist judge strikes ALL of it down.
