Islamophobia is back on the rise in the U.S. despite cautious optimism in 2008 that post-Sept. 11 anti-Muslim sentiments had begun to decline, according to a report released today by the University of California at Berkeley and a national Islamic rights group.
The authors of "Same Hate, New Target: Islamophobia and Its Impact in the United States 2009-10" found that Americans' favorable rating of Islam is only 30 percent -- down 10 percentage points from November 2001, according to a Pew Research Center study.
"Same Hate, New Target," which was co-sponsored by UC Berkeley's Center for Race and Gender and the Council on American-Islamic Relations, took a in-depth look at intolerant actions and discourse and provided recommendations for combating Islamophobia in the future.
"This report shows that Americans who embrace pluralism must act together to prevent Islamophobia from being accepted in mainstream society," CAIR national legislative director Corey Saylor said in a statement.
"Islamophobia is the new face of an old hate that has targeted minorities throughout our nation's history."
The groups defined Islamophobia as prejudice against or hatred of Islam and Muslims. After years of decline, it spiked after President Obama's 2009 inauguration, according to the report.
Report authors said political and community groups used Islam to attack the president, ..
"Many bigots are upset that we have a black president," one Muslim who formerly held public office told the report's authors.
"But because of the taboo associated with anti-black racism, they are constrained from openly expressing it. So they falsely declare Obama is a Muslim and feel comfortable denigrating him for that."
The report also described what it called the manufactured controversy surrounding the Park 51 Islamic Community Center in Manhattan, a 2010 ballot initiative in Oklahoma attacking Sharia, and Islamophobia in the 2010 election.

Palin Derangement Syndrome or Palinphobia?

hmmm...Shocker. The factual information Americans have collected on the “religion of peace” since Nov 2001 fills pages.
Just an example from today:
Police Report: All Assault Rapists in Oslo Follow Muhammad

Defenders of Islam call it a “religion of peace” but many Norwegian women are learning that Islam is the religion of rape. According to an amazing police report released there this month, every single solved case of assault-rape in the country in 2010 was carried out by a Muslim immigrant.
The report was cited by an official Norwegian television station, which interviewed a victim who said that her rapist explained to her that his religion permits him to rape her.

Muslim Rape Epidemic Puts Sweden at Top of Euro Rape Statistics
September 1, 2009 by BNP News
A Muslim rape epidemic in Sweden has ensured that it now tops the list as the European country with the most rapes per capita 46 incidents per 100,000 residents.
True but they would tell you they are not Christians not recognizing that Islam does not care in their eyes they are....I’ve always wondered how surpsied they all would be if they ever really got what they wanted? Shaira law covers women, kills gays, and does not allow abortions...wonder just how hapy they would be about all of that?
To KNOW Islam is to hate it.
I googled Islamisia and couldn’t find it. Islamophobia is an incorrect term. We may fear Islam, but we hate it even more.
By KNOWING Islam, you will hate it. Hence I thought Islamognosis is the correct term.
At any rate, we need something better than Islamophobia.
Excellent! Did you coin the word? May it spread from sea to shining sea.
Americans are also correctly and sanely afraid of any cult group that has killing of you and your family and your friends and fellow citizens as its stated goal. Funny thing about Americans’ fears of bigoted mass murderers. It’s a quaint survivalist thing.
“We are told that 90% of muslims are moderate muslims afraid of Islam due to its extreme values and understanding and following of the myth of Mohammad.”
We are also told about ghosts, werewolves, and Santa Claus.
The moderate Moslim is just as mythical as a unicorn.
Sort of. Then ggogled it and found one link but no detail at the site:
Beat me to it.
A phobia is an irrational fear.
After we’ve seen so much death and destruction caused by Muslims, is it really irrational to have a fear of them????
The proposal for the term “Islamognostic” is in the comments section of the posting at Jihad Watch. Actually “Jihadwatchful” might be a politically correct way to get the point across.

“Awad, Ihsanoglu Discuss Future CAIR-OIC Projects”
Maha Akeel, Arab News
SNIPPET: “JEDDAH, 4 July 2007 The executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Nihad Awad, attended a meeting yesterday with the secretary-general of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, discussing cooperation on future projects.
Im pleased to meet with Ihsanoglu to discuss the situation of Muslims in the United States and to work on future projects, Awad told Arab News.
Last week, US President George W. Bush announced that he would be appointing a special envoy to the OIC in a step that is considered important in improving relationships between the US and the Muslim world. This is the first time a president has made such an appointment to the OIC. Our special envoy will listen to and learn from representatives from Muslim states and will share with them Americas views and values, said Bush in his speech at the Islamic Center of Washington on June 27.
Ihsanoglu welcomed the initiative, which follows the establishment in March of an OIC ambassadorial group in Washington.
CAIR issued a statement welcoming the step by President Bush and we hope that this will help improve relationships in terms of communication between the largest body of the Muslim world and the US, and we hope that the selection of the individual would also be representative of the Muslim community and its views, said Awad.
According to recent studies and polls in the US by CAIR and other organizations, incidents of attacks and discrimination against Muslims have increased as well as Muslims own feelings of apprehension and disapproval of US policies toward Muslims.
Awad puts some of the blame for that on the negative reporting of the Muslim world by some media outlets that tend to be selective and one-sided. Another factor is the dedicated individuals and institutions that smear Islam and Muslims left and right for their political ends, said Awad.”
