Gannett Plans More Layoffs
Wall Street Journal ^ | 6/22/2011 | Russell Adams

Posted on 06/23/2011 8:15:19 AM PDT by Cracker Jack

Citing the slower-than-expected pace of the economy recovery, Gannett Co. said it plans to lay off about 700 employees as part of a broader round of cost cuts in its U.S. newspaper division.

The job reductions represent about 2% of the company's work force and will affect Gannett's U.S. Community Publishing division, which consists of about 80 daily papers. Gannett, the largest U.S. publisher by circulation, also owns USA Today, which isn't part of that unit............

Gannett, which also owns TV stations, has had several rounds of layoffs and other cuts, including furloughs, in recent years to get costs in line with falling revenue. The company finished last year with about 32,600 employees, down from 49,675 employees at the end of 2006.

I subscribed for decades to my local newspaper, which was locally owned in the past. I do not subscribe to the liberal rag that it has become. They even endorsed obama.

great news!

It may be great from a propaganda standpoint, but I feel for the people losing their jobs. How many are ordinary workers?

LOL... "Valued Gannett associates, we feel obligated to inform you that your homes may be foreclosed on sooner than expected, due to the fact that your income will be unexpectedly low after you find out that you're not nearly as still employed as you might have expected."

Gannett, McClatchy and others are headed into the home stretch in the layoff derby. I note that the local McClatchy rag has “partnered” with radio stations, tv stations, stringers and “guest journalists” (non-paid) to assemble the daily disappointment. Periodically (pun intended) they announce another round of staff cuts due to “decreased ad revenue”. No mention is made of fewer customers. There are quite a few local free local papers who seem to survive on ad revenues alone.

Evidently Gannett and McClatchy are the bank tellers in the age of ATMs to use an Obamaism.

Apt description but then again, bank tellers perform a service you would want to have done. I can't say that about the 'journalists' at McClatchy, who trashed my old hometown paper (Sacramento Bee) and have now destroyed my new hometown paper (Raleigh News and Observer).

When you canceled your subscription, did you tell them why?

Why should the media be surprised? They went out of their way working with the teachers on union causes. So much so they forgot to teach the children how to READ. Most of the sheeples of their ilk are either on drugs or playing mineless vidio games only stopping long enough to vote for their demoncrats so they can collect their free handouts. Good luck to you media folks. Maybe you can start looking for job like the rest of Americans.

Yes, they don't care. The one thing they do allow is letters to the editor... from liberals and conservatives.

That is the only way locals who don't listen to talk radio or watch Fox News will learn what's actually going on in the country.
