New U.S. claims for unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week, a government report showed on Thursday, suggesting little improvement in the labor market this month after employment stumbled in May.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits climbed 9,000 to a seasonally adjusted 429,000, the Labor Department said. The prior week's figure was revised up to 420,000.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims to edge up to 415,000 from a previously reported count of 414,000.

THis is truly awful!
Am I seeing a commonality among this morning’s joblessness reports?
Both Reuters and this story omit the number [429,000] from their headlines. The Reuters article even buries it in the 2nd paragraph.
Are they so embarrassed with the numbers that they can’t even bring themselves to headline them?
Unexpected Thursday
(Pleasant Valley Sunday - with apologies to Gerry Goffin, Carole King and the Monkees)
The White House Press Corps down the hall
Is trying hard to learn their song
Serenade the weak kneed Gibbs, who just came out to make them yawn
Another Unexpected Thursday!
Spilled Oil burning everywhere!
Rows of houses they’re all foreclosed
And no one seems to care
See Mrs. O, she’s proud today because her roses are in bloom!
Mr. O he’s so serene, He’s on TV in every room!
Another Unexpected Thursday!
Here in Unemployment Land!
The Press complains about how high it is
And the people just don’t understand
Creature comfort goals
They only numb my soul and make it hard for me to see
My thoughts all seem to stray, to places far away
I need a change of scenery
Ta Ta Ta...
Another Unexpected Thursday
Spilled Oil burning everywhere!
Another Unexpected Thursday
Here in Unemployment land
Another Unexpected Thursday...
as expected..............
Unexpected!
(yeah, right)
I think it’s past time we recognize we’re in Great Depression II. The major bear market rally looks to be falling apart...there’s a significant risk of the DJIA falling below $5000.
What they can’t report is that due to 0s successful
energy policies consumers are spending more on gas and
electricity and have less to spend on consumer goods.
With 60% of the US economy dependent on consumer spending
this translates to layoffs and staff reductions.
Eliminate the income and corp. tax = jobs for everyone! Fairtax can do the job! Get it done you idiots in Congress...good grief.
Headlines, November 7, 2012:
"Barack Hussein Obama, lost to .....(fill in the blank, though I'd like to hope it was Sarah Palin) by a much wider margin....THEN EXPECTED..."
He who laughs last.....will be us who will be responsible for helping kick his sorry, Fascist, Neo-Commie, ass out, in spite of his having been aided and abetted by this sycophant butt-buddies in the State-Run Media.
Either that or they don't have anyone left who can count that high ;-)
DRINK!

That makes me smile!
What is worse, is that this number is almost certain to be revised upwards.
You would think with all these months and weeks of “unexpected” it would be come “expected”.
Every one drink!
how UNEXPECTED!!!
and here’s the money quote I always scan the article for
“The prior week’s figure was revised up to 420,000”
SHAZAM!!!!
I’d like to be the first to say it:
Bush’s Fault
Barrack Obama in OCT 31:
The economy was worse THAN EXPECTED when I WON in 2008. I need another term to correct the mistakes of 2001-2008.

Bringing a few of the boys home from Afghanistan ain’t gonna help you with this one, Barry.
