High school seniors in Maryland will have to be literate on environmental matters to graduate from now on. Marylands Board of Education passed the environmental literacy graduation requirement on Tuesday. Gov. Martin OMalley says Maryland is now the first state in the nation to have such a requirement. The No Child Left Inside Coalition, which pushed for the requirement, says 48 other states are considering similar requirements, a sign of the increasing popularity of environmental education.
Under the graduation requirement, public schools will be required to infuse core subjects with lessons on conservation, smart growth and other environmental topics. School systems will be able to shape their programs, but they must align with state standards.
As a Marylander, I'm looking forward to the day we ignite a sustainable, renewable revolt.
One can only assume that the first sentence of the AP article was written by a graduate of Maryland Public Schools.
Great. Meanwhile they won’t be able to read above an 8th grade level, won’t be able to find Japan on a map and will need a calculator to add 8+4.
No doubt this means they will be forced to believe in Global Warming.
Maybe we should add LGBT Studies to raise our ranking.
I’m sure that global warming will be taught as fact, while any other theories would be talked about as being in error.
I’m sure that the schools will require viewing of “An Inconvenient Truth”. And if Al Gore wrote a book version or study guide for it, that will be required reading.
They will measure carbon footprints.
I hope they do some good math problems. Such as, calculate the carbon footprint of automobiles, if we transition to electric cars, but the electricity for the cars is generated in coal fired power plants. This one could actually cause the students to think, rather than parrot back one line bumper sticker slogans.
I think I understand why some folks in western Maryland think that Maryland should end at Hancock, and that western Maryland has a lot more in common with neighboring West Virginia.
Since the green movement is a religious movement, shouldn't this topic be banned?
Actually, they already have that. Concerned parents took the School Board to court to prevent elementary school sexed and a judge in Rockville ruled the curriculum authority rested with the school board.
Students will learn how they and their families and the deniers’ SUV’s are killing Mother Gaia, and why they should all get government jobs and ride bikes to work
But they will graduate without ever understanding why there was no school on Rosh Hashana
As a Southern Marylander I feel that Maryland should end at the St. Mary’s County line and become our own State.
We need to Secede from the rest of the State.
The rest of the State ignores us anyway, Baltimore gets all the money
Many Marylanders also believe the Eastern shore is very similar to Western Maryland (more conservatives and common sense). It’s the counties like Montgomery, Howard, Baltimore, Anne Arundel... etc that are the most liberal.
I’ll come join you from MoCo.
Classic O’Malley idiocy at play here, coupled with leftist indoctrination. Why do I doubt the curriculum will explore a cost/benefit analysis of the banning of DDT, for example? Environmental literacy is the LAST thing at issue here.
Great, more unemployable HS graduates.
How about a class in basic Physics instead.
This will be required, along with “Community Organizing”, “Union Organizing 101”, and “Why America is the most evil country in the world”.
I am outraged!
So now they’re finally openly INDOCTRINATING people!
!#%$E%^$@#@$#!$$^@$^%$^@!@#!@^%$#^
“Growing popularity”? Where’ve they been? I am sick and tired of this enviro-mental worship! It’s been 20 years already!
Silly Wabbit! The nice, clean electricity comes out of the wall socket. What do you mean that electric cars are “coal powered”? That has to be the dumbest statement ever.
There have been some threads here recently about states seceding from the union. But you touch on an issue of marginalized/ignored/conservative regions of states seceding from those states, and forming separate states. This could be a very interesting movement if it ever got off the ground.
I think that all the liberals should be kicked out of Mt. Airy, and the town should secede from Maryland to form its own state. Heaven knows, the town has enough ordinances to be its own state already!
And all graduation ceremonies shall end with, “Long live the Goracle!”
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
