Because they want Romney to attack first. Michele is gaining steam (similar to Huckabee). If this continues, then the Romney camp will have to respond (negatively) just like they did in 2008. Firing that first shot would be an admission of the Romney campaign that their guy is indeed vulnerable. At that point, it’s then the right time to hammer him (and hammer him hard). Until then, the focus is on building her and her credentials up, so that she will be in the right place in the polls at the right time.

My congressman won against a democrat incumbent with double the funding.

It should be noted that Palin and Romney both backed one of the GOP challengers who was less than conservative in that race.

Much as I like Palin, if it becomes obvious that she can’t defeat Obama, we must not nominate her.

Don't worry. She can and will.

And what was Reagan's reaction to this? Publicly, he was his sunny optimistic self, laughing off the age issue and declining to attack Crane. But privately? As Craig Shirley recounts (at page 33) in his epic story of the 1980 Campaign, "Rendezvous with Destiny", Reagan was hopping mad about Phil Crane's betrayal :

Shirley also pointed out later in the book that all of Reagan's primary opponents were given speaking slots at the convention EXCEPT for his most conservative opponent, Phil Crane. Reagan was in no mood to forgive Phil Crane in Detroit.

Good post.

Nail, meet Hammer.

This is an exquisite explanation of exactly what is happening. MB is a VERY ambitious womn with no loyalty except to herself. This is calculated and cold and that is how I, and many others, see it. It isn’t about the country. It’s about her. She has made it thus.
I am not going to argue with bachmann supporters over this either. MB will out herself. Sometimes obvious has to be stark enough to draw blood when you have been bamboozled. It will be. And it’s sad because it didn’t need to be this way.

Ah. So that explains the rote, reflexive spewing on any and all threads even remotely regarding Sarah Palin, then. Well spotted! ;)

I voted for Phil Crane in the 1980 Republican primary (my first ever vote was for Reagan in the 1976 primary).

I don't know if Crane could have won the election, but I believed that he was more conservative than Reagan.

Bachmann has many skeletons in her closet that will expose her as just another corrupt politician

No she doesn't. What she does have is a fever squad of scum bag political activist foes willing to be out and out liars. These scumbags are willing to say anything to defeat her from manufacturing a fraudulent family farm getting subsides to claiming Karl Rove hand picked her to head the tea party.

Long before Karl Rove was known outside of Texas, Bachmann was a solid Conservative voice in Minnesota politics.

So how about you quit spamming the board with lies and character assassination comments about Bachmann and try making the case FOR your chosen candidate instead?

I used to think the GOP establishment enlisted Bachmann to dilute the conservative votes in the primary (i.e. stalking horse theory), in exchange to promise Bachmann the second place on the ticket. Now, I think Bachmann is purely being used.

IF Bachmann is successful and Romney got the nod, I believe Romney / GOP establishment is going to pick either Rubio or another Southerner (or TX/Southwest) but more to Romney’s right as his running mate.

Bachmann will have learned a hard lesson. Maybe she’ll be a secretary of something minor. But the downward trend of the country will continue and the public will be justified to blame the final descend all on the Republicans.

Thanks for the ping! I don’t remember Phil Crane from back then. Looks quite analogous to what we are currently seeing; hopefully the author is correct on the ultimate outcome.

This article is downright silly. Not the world, the U.S., or even the Republican party revolves around Sarah Palin. If she decides to run, she will be a strong candidate but with her own set of strengths and weaknesses. Right now, good conservatives, like Bachman and Cain, have decided to take the field. To argue that this has something to do with Romney or Palin is to denigrate their commitment to this Country.

The Palin cultists do as much harm to Palin as do the Romneybots. If Palin decides to run, conservatives will take a good hard look at supporting her. If she waits too long, commitments to established candidates could be hard to break. Personally, I hope she runs but what will be the eventual outcome of this decision is unknown to Palin, her supporters and to her opposition. Meanwhile, conspiracy theories do little to shed light on the quality of our candidates.

Oh, there is an extreme number of me out there and our money (which is substantial) will go to a good cause, or should I say, candidate?

(We HAVE been talking a lot lately and you would not like to hear about who. But it is pretty much unanimous.)
