Things I don't like about Perry include him having been a Democrat politician up until 1989, and his having been a the Gore campaign chairman for Texas in 1988.

Things I like include his being from Texas A&M rather than yet another Ivy League guy, having been an active-duty air force officer and pilot for five years, having worked in a real job (working the family farm) before going into politics.

He's not as conservative as Palin, but he seems for-real and as a successful governor of Texas for ten years nobody can play the "inexperienced executive" card on him. Also, at 61 he's old enough to have some mature wisdom, but not too old.

Finally that changed in the 70’s and 80’s as the dems moved hard left and took up voter pandering big time (LBJ effect) and a lot of previous “Conservative” dems came over to a more realistic conservative home. It was an amazing experience to watch as Yeller Dog after Yeller Dog began voting GOP. It happened all across the South.

Having EX-DEM credentials is a good thing.
