ARVADA, Colo. -- Their Fathers Day ended with a bang.
Nancy Passarella and her family found themselves picking up the pieces after their Martha Stewart Living glass top patio table suddenly exploded sending flying glass and food everywhere.
"All of a sudden we heard this loud explosion, and the table proceeds to disintegrate," Nancy told us.
The mother and grandmother took pictures right after it happened, and you can see the familys startled expressions and fresh injuries.
My son and his girlfriend were cut by the flying glass, she said.
Passarella now believes the table she bought from K-Mart in 2008 or 2009 is unsafe. And shes not alone.
FOX31 Denver has learned that hundreds of people have filed complaints about that same table on consumeraffairs.com. There was also a class action lawsuit filed in 2005 accusing Martha Stewart Living of manufacturing defective tables.
The Consumer Products Safety Commission investigated the issue in 2006 and asked Martha Stewart Living to re-design the table to make them less likely to shatter.
We contacted a spokesperson for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and the company sent us a statement, which reads:
"We take product safety very seriously. We provide the aesthetic design for beautiful products. Because we do not oversee the mechanical design, engineering or manufacturing of the products, we require all of our vendor partners to adopt and comply with product safety programs and reviews. If customers have any questions about these particular tables, they should contact Kmart customer relations at 866-562-7848."
The spokesperson told FOX 31 Denver it is K-Marts responsibility to fix the problem.
Still, Nancy believes consumers need to be warned about the potential danger.
If you have one of these tables, get rid of it, it is dangerous.
Actually it was an off-limits club in Copenhagen for med students, I think. Fortunately, the only thing broken was my wallet.
Good gracious! Couldn't they just purchase the new table with a charge card?
The upper class is rarely bothered by such things. They pay people to deal with such trivial matters.
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What does where it was purchased have to do with anything? You sound like a builder I know who swears anything bought from Home Depot or Lowes is inferior. Even though it is in the same box and carries the same model number as a similar item sold in a local “non box store retailer”, it is nonetheless not the same and is manufactured to different and lesser standards by the manufacturer under direction from the giant retailer.
A story heard about 10 times is about a plumber who bought the identical boxed faucet from his own local plumbing supplier and from Home Depot. In taking each apart he claimed the internal parts of the one he bought from his local outlet had all brass parts while the HD item had plastic.
You can’t make this stuff up folks, these people are really out there and they are allowed to vote. Even worse, they breed.
Not necessarily. Glass is a funny material, It will sometimes just break under the slightest of provocations and some times it will be practically indestructible. I once knocked off a glass blender container from the counter top and it fell onto a tile floor, about 30 inches or so. It BOUNCED! about 6 inches off the floor, then hit again and shattered......................
I was just guessing that the only place you can purchase Martha Stewart merchandise is K-Mart.
All the other crap you spewed is your own personal hysteria.
Wow. Thanks for the input.
LOL, hysteria? hardly. My guess is you are one of those caught up in the "Demon" big store mentality and actually believe the things sold in your tiny neighborhood store are somehow better even though they are mostly made in China, Taiwan, India or some other Asian country just like the box store stuff is.
I hit Walmart three times a week.
K-Mart went out of business in my town. That's the only reason I speculate about where you get Martha Stewart merchandise.
I bet you accuse your kids of all kinds of things they never did, too.
they double as fine grilling spatulas.
You may be a kid but you are not mine. Mine are very bright and always admit when they are wrong.
Sounds like you beat them into submission.
Not to often, just enough to keep them sharp.
Just often enough to keep them cowering and cringing.
That’s nonsense. They do however snap to attention and say “sir” when I call them and “yes sir or no sir” in response to my questions.
You must be so proud.
The refrigerator door flew open and food and glass flew everywhere. One of the shelves had shattered for no discernible reason. Fortunately, the main things stored on it were fruit, vegetables, and bread, so there wasn't a huge mess to clean up aside from the glass.
Glass is a strange material. It actually flows. The windows of cathedrals in Europe, hundreds of years old, show that the glass is thicker st the bottom than at the top..................
Actually we are quite proud of our children. One has a doctorate in business and is a senor VP in a Forbes top 10 ranked corporation (he’s just 41) and the other has a medical degree and is a self employed specialist in the area of nerve trauma.
How are your kids doing? Are they still living at home with Mom and Dad where their precious self esteem can be continually propped up?
