Arvada woman says Martha Stewart table exploded for no reason

ARVADA, Colo. -- Their Father’s Day ended with a bang.

Nancy Passarella and her family found themselves picking up the pieces after their Martha Stewart Living glass top patio table suddenly exploded sending flying glass and food everywhere.

"All of a sudden we heard this loud explosion, and the table proceeds to disintegrate," Nancy told us.

The mother and grandmother took pictures right after it happened, and you can see the family’s startled expressions and fresh injuries.

“My son and his girlfriend were cut by the flying glass,” she said.

Passarella now believes the table she bought from K-Mart in 2008 or 2009 is unsafe. And she’s not alone.

FOX31 Denver has learned that hundreds of people have filed complaints about that same table on consumeraffairs.com. There was also a class action lawsuit filed in 2005 accusing Martha Stewart Living of manufacturing defective tables.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission investigated the issue in 2006 and asked Martha Stewart Living to re-design the table to make them less likely to shatter.

We contacted a spokesperson for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and the company sent us a statement, which reads:

"We take product safety very seriously. We provide the aesthetic design for beautiful products. Because we do not oversee the mechanical design, engineering or manufacturing of the products, we require all of our vendor partners to adopt and comply with product safety programs and reviews. If customers have any questions about these particular tables, they should contact Kmart customer relations at 866-562-7848."

The spokesperson told FOX 31 Denver it is K-Mart’s responsibility to fix the problem.

Still, Nancy believes consumers need to be warned about the potential danger.

“If you have one of these tables, get rid of it, it is dangerous.”

Is it a glass top table, or is it...

I’d rethink getting any glass tables.

I'd never have a glass table. Even if it doesn't explode, I don't want to look at other people's feet--or even my own--while I eat.

Oh, I’m sure the table exploded for a reason.

The only thing that exploded without a reason was the universe, at least, according to the folks who think ID is a nutty non-theory.

I found hundreds of stories about tempered glass simply exploding.

Ditto. I must have been reading the same website a few years ago. I'm very careful to not place a hot glass dish on a cold counter. But after reading accounts of glass exploding out of the blue, I'm tempted to throw away all my glass baking dishes. My husband is a purist who mistrusts aluminum and other metal, so I think I'll invest in some Le Creuset cookware. I had some once but tossed it because of its weight, but it produced the best pot roasts and chicken soup I've ever had.

We had this happen to us. We had a glass-top ourdoor table and had just sat down to eat after putting a hot pot on the glass surface. Within 2 minutes, the glass suddenly shattered into a million tiny pieces. Scared the heck out us and ruined the dinner!

I’m a retired pedal steel and lead guitar player. Of course, I had to do lots of other jobs to pay for my musical career!

My glass-top table stories will have to wait for a different thread.

Something to do with Danny Thomas?

When we were first married someone gave us a large set of Correle dishes. This was around 1973.

Within a few days a coffee cup exploded when my late wife poured coffee in it. They replaced it for free and I still have that set. Never had another problem but it was strange.

Yes, most likely the force of the ashtray cracking in two caused the glass tabletop to fracture.........

I know someone who nearly lost a leg from a glass coffee table breaking. I’d rethink getting any glass tables.

People have been killed falling into glass coffee tables.

Sure, it doesn't happen very often but there are a million ways to die and this has been one of them.

Thank you.
I wondered about that.
Must have been one heck of a fire in that ash tray.

Staged photo. Shattered glass should not send a paper plate under the table leg. Dude wasn’t eating dinner with his flip flops in his hand.
