Both the Sheriff and McCain have put themselves in a position to be attacked. Their statements are entirely politically incorrect. We are not supposed to notice when illegal aliens commit crimes in this country. When you do you be quickly labeled as an obvious racist. I don’t know anything about the sheriff, but McCain spends most of his energy sucking up to the Left (unless he running for President, of course) and has made his views supporting amnesty for illegal aliens well known. (Yes, I know he calls it something else, but it is still amnesty.) McCain has nothing to gain by blaming the wildfires on illegal aliens. He is not up for reelection in the near future. I am inclined to believe that he is telling the truth on this one.

I heard they were questioning 2 people that had camped there and neglected to put out their campfire all the way.
That was 2 days ago when I was almost right in the middle of the fire - I was less than 5 miles from it in AZ and heard this on an AZ radio station.

This is a typical liberal question- did the illegals set all the fires? No of course not, did they set some of the fires- very likely since they do it all the time. Lack of awareness of the border situation- media won’t listen, won’t do their research, won’t report due to PC, you name it. Illegals setting fires is NOT new, it is common knowledge of anyone that is familiar with the border issues. They set fires for warmth, cooking, and as a diversion for smuggling activities. The only “new” thing is it is so dry any fire is likely to get out of control and become a major issue. That and many do not want to admit that illegals regularly have and do cause fires, just not PC don’t you know?
But explained McCain, federal personnel have told him for years and years that ILLEGALS do set fires all the time.
