Parents Fleeing San Francisco - City, Media in Denial About Why

by Sheri Urban

The S.F. Chronicle is reporting that San Francisco is losing families in droves and blames crowded schools, and lack of housing.

Despite San Francisco officials' efforts to keep families in the city, the percentage of children among the city's total population continues to decline....Just 13.4 percent of the city's 805,235 residents are younger than 18, one of the smallest percentages of any city in the country.
The school district has lost almost 7,000 kids over the past decade, down in 2010 to 53,033.
Why is it that families are fleeing San Francisco? Former DCF head under Gavin Newsom has the answer.
Margaret Brodkin, who worked as Newsom's head of the Department of Children, Youth and Their Families, called the census figures "beyond depressing." City Hall should be more aggressive on affordable housing issues, she said. Newsom's policy council on family flight recommended that the city require housing developers to include affordable, family-friendly units with bathtubs, large kitchens and closets, laundry facilities and access to the outdoors.
The fleeing families need larger kitchen, closets and laundry facilities? REALLY?
In 1960, children made up 25 percent of the city's population, versus just 13.4 percent today.
That is a massive drop in the number of children. One that simply cannot be accounted for by the so-called reasons for which the city and media are trying to convince themselves. Dozens of other cities are experiencing the same challenges and issues as is S.F. So why are parents fleeing in far greater numbers there than anywhere else? Could it be because of OTHER changes which have altered the city since 1960? Are city and media leaders really blind to what happens on their own streets year after year, with increasing extremism, driving the most anti-family environment in America?

Still not getting it? Here are a few little hints...

SanFran sounds like a miserable place. The Nanny State will have none of this and none of that, for the common good and ‘cause the progressive, control freaks say so.

Maybe parents actually want to parent?

A small (apparently) percentage even of Libs start to feel uneasy with the sleazy society they've created once they have children (so long as they haven't deadened their hearts to the natural pull to protect and nurture your children). Sort of like wayward Christians going back to church once they have children and realize, hey, I want my kids to have exposure to spiritual knowledge.

Why do we let girls dress that way?

Same as people from New England moving south to escape taxes and socialist policies, then voting for same in their new state.

Former DCF head under Gavin Newsom has the answer.

Ummm..didn't Newsom just move out of S.F. for better conditions to raise his family?

I haven’t been there in many years and I hated it then and that was before public sex and perversion. It sounds awful now.

Nothing about the city compensates for the overall gross and dirty (literally) atmosphere. It is crazy-town. No thanks.

“Same as people from New England moving south to escape taxes...”

We know several people who live in NC. They tell us exactly what you just said. People “escape” other states due to high taxes, crazy stuff in public schools and move to a “more” conservative area. The first thing they do is run for the school board and then they take off trying to implement every type of liberal policy you can think of. We actually started wondering if this was done by accident or design? What you said is very, very true!

I’ve heard it about NC more than any other state. They have a real problem with this, esp. around Wilmington and other retirement hubs.

It all just goes to prove the adage that “wherever you go, there you are.”
