YAPHANK, N.Y. (AP) -- Four people killed during a pharmacy store robbery in suburban New York City, including a teenager due to graduate high school this week, were shot at very close range by a dangerous suspect intent on stealing painkillers, a police official said Monday.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer also warned physicians and the owners of small drugstores in the area to be vigilant about anyone "expressing an urgent need for prescription painkillers.

I’m so sick of dealing with people seeking painkillers in the ER. I wish we could just put a bowl in the lobby with a “Help Yourself” sign...

Likely the Vicodin type stuff. I know several people who have had their lives ruined by that garbage.

Let me guess...being New York, neither the pharmacist nor any of the other victims were ARMED, right??!!

WOW! Thank GOODNESS, for that, huh Mayor Bloomberg! Something reeely BAD might have happened if untrustworthy, LAW ABIDING citizens had been able to defend themselves!!!!

He had a painkiller in his hand. All he had to do was put it into his mouth and squeeze the trigger.

I’m all for blowing away people hell bent on deadly violence, but in the grand balance of things, would it not have been easier just to throw some damn meds at the guy so he’d go away....and then call the police? There’s no need for such a situation to escalate to the level of deadly violence.

The pharmacies could keep some ‘magic pills’ to bundle in with robberies that allow GPS tracking of the individuals.

Most people don't know how they're gonna feel from one moment to the next. But a dope fiend has a pretty good idea. All you gotta do is look at the labels on the little bottles.

Your post assumes that killing four people was a rational response by the gunman to a refusal of service.

So do I! And they age from 55 through 85.

I read the whole article. I saw no mention of refusal or escalation. These people were shot at point-blank range. They were executed. I don’t believe that the killer was threatened by a 17 year-old girl or a 71 year-old woman.

Dogs like this one need to be put down.

As a born and raised NYer (though I am a Marylander now), allow me please to address this issue which may surprise many. It is not the STATE of NY that is a gun-grabbing neurotic blemish on the body politic, but rather, NYC (and even NYC is not as bad as some other cities).

NY State's gun laws are not THAT bad, and this was in Suffolk County where a gun permit would not be that hard to obtain for a pharmacist

Chances are that the four people didn’t escalate the situation but the bad guy figured “no witnesses” was to his advantage. This is very sad. I can’t imagine burying a child because she had a part time job at a pharmacy. Very sad.

I'm surprised you would mention those two things in the same sentence. The 2nd amendment is our gun permit.

I take it daily and have a better (less pain) life. There's use then there's abuse.

Maybe Bloomie thinks it was done by a white guy in his thirties that hates the health care bill and loves to smoke salt in restaurants.

Hey man...I am on your side...but the state is much better than the city...that was my point.
