Jose Luis Hernandez is like many Daltonians.
Most of his family brothers, uncles, nephews, cousins and even grandchildren also call Dalton home. Hernandez has lived here for 13 years.
He has a steady job working construction. Before that he worked in local carpet mills.
Hernandez frequents the abundant shops along East Morris Street, supporting a slumping economy hit by sky-high unemployment.
For the past 10 years, hes paid a mortgage on his home.
Theres a glaring difference, however, between Hernandez and most Dalton residents: He is an illegal immigrant.
Days before Georgias new immigration law the Illegal Immigration Reform and Enforcement Act of 2011 goes into effect on July 1, Hernandez fears his comfortable life in Dalton could end as quickly as the snap of handcuffs. But his concern is not focused solely on himself. He worries how the law will impact Hispanics here, the entire Dalton community and most importantly, his children.
That is who it will affect the most, Hernandez said through an interpreter while shopping at a Hispanic-owned bakery in East Dalton. My son has a son born here. Imagine if they grab my son and take him. The law is also going to affect business people, banks. Many people buy homes without documents and carry on for more than eight, 10 or 12 years now paying the house and they are going to leave, and that will be the government left to deal with all that.
The state Legislature overwhelmingly passed House Bill 87 last session. Gov. Nathan Deal signed the bill on May 13, saying there is no better way to promote the quality of life of all who live here and no better way to protect taxpayers than upholding the rule of law.

The problem is he is not a criminal because he violated a civil law and not a criminal law.
Coming here illegally (or over staying a visa which accounts for 50% of illegals) should be a felony.
In Mexico they routinely stop buses headed North and ask suspected illegals to sing the National Anthem. Any hesitation and ADIOS!
Not a bad idea.
Some years back (when Bush was in office) referred to Bank of America (they announced that they were opening accts., etc. using Mexican national ID cards, as “Bank of Amigo.”
“Many people buy homes without documents and carry on for more than eight, 10 or 12 years now paying the house and they are going to leave, and that will be the government left to deal with all that.
And the fact banks made the loans is another issue completely. It doesn’t make you legal.
That is who it will affect the most, Hernandez said through an interpreter while shopping at a Hispanic-owned bakery in East Dalton.
13 Years in Dalton and he still doesn’t speak English ? Send him home. He is not serious about being an American. House or not !
8 USC 1325: 1st violation - Federal misdemeanor, up to 6 months prison, and/or a fine; 2nd violation - Federal felony, up to 2 years and/or a fine.
Illegal immigration is a crime.
Thanks for making my point! First offense is a misdemeanor and should be a felony!
Unless you have knowledge of the offender not in the article, no prosecutor will pursue a misdemeanor that is nonviolent.

And it's not a civil violation if the prosecutor doesn't press charges, just means he didn't press charges.
Illegal immigration is a crime. That's why it's called illegal...
By YOUR definition most freepers are criminals.
Have you ever had any moving or non moving violation?
“Thirteen years of taking over construction work from Americans.”
Starting at 15, I was an apprentice carpenter during my Summer vacations. It was an honorable job. All the guys owned houses, and managed to send their kids to college. Later, I hung sheet rock. Because I was good, I made great money on the “piece” basis. Try finding an all American crew now! Most crews have one bi-lingual guy, and a bunch of mezzicans.
Don’t know about your state, but in many if not most states traffic violations are civil infractions(Not including a few criminal ones like DUI, DWLS/R, Reckless, Vehicular Homicide/Manslaughter)
I got one thing to say to these illegal aliens who have somehow managed to obtain a mortgage -— GTFO! Go home, I have zero sympathy.
Yes they are and they are misdemeanors.
Thanks again!
Illegal immigration should be a felony not a misdemeanor.
I am glad we are in complete agreement!
Thirteen years in Georgia and he needs an interpreter. He has not the most minimal respect for this country. Refusal to learn/speak English is an act of calculated contempt.
Guatemala and El Salvador don't have drug wars going on. So what are Guatemalans and Salvadorians excuses for being able to stay here illegally?
Boy have you been fooled. People do not starve in Mexico though life may suck there in other ways
I have zero sympathy for these invaders and their children. What you fail to realize is that they have a job and their job is to somehow get into America. While our job is to keep them out.
An attitude like you illustrate is part of the problem, not part of the solution to a problem in our midst.
That’s a recycled Eldridge Cleaver quote
Boo Hoo!!! What is an illegal alien doing with a mortgage? He has had 13 years to enjoy the wonderfulness of our country illegally. Now get the Hell out!!! Go back and milk the Mexican system.
Bring down the wages in both fields.

Most East Morris businesses are Hispanic owned. You can tell how much they trust their own people. One of the first things Hispanics do before they open a business in a Hispanic area is put bars on the doors and windows.
Illegals said they were justified in coming here because there were to many jobs for Americans to fill. Now that we have "sky-high" unemployment they should leave.
For the past 10 years, hes paid a mortgage on his home.
I have no sympathy for banks who gave mortgage loans to illegals, and now see the homes deserted. IMHO, the banks were hoping the illegals would pay on their homes for years and then get deported. I'd like to know how much sub-prime loans to illegals figured into our economic down fall.
They should put illegal immigrants on a chain gang and use them to build the wall. Once completed, release them into Mexico.
