After her speech at the Republican Leadership Conference, I asked GOP presidential candidate and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann about her repeated claims that she has "raised" 23 foster children, a comment she reiterated in an interview with CNN following her speech.
Writing in the Daily Beast this week, Michelle Goldberg quoted Kris Harvieux, who worked as a senior social worker in the foster care system in Bachmann's county, who said at least some of Bachmann's placements were likely short term.
"Some of them you have for a week. Some of them you have for three years, some you have for six months," he said. "She makes it sound like she got them at birth and raised them to adulthood, but that's not true."
According to Goldberg, the Minnesota Department of Human Services reports that Bachmann's foster care license allowed her to care for at most three children at any one time; she had the license for 7 1/2 years.
Asked to explain her situation with her foster children, Bachmann said "we took children in as teenagers."
"Their family was facing a challenge and they weren't going to be able to be at home with their parents and so we took them in as teenagers," she continued. "And our job was to see that they graduated from high school and were successfully launched into the world."
Asked how long they lived with her, she said "it varied."
I asked Bachmann to explain the parameters of how long the children lived with her - was it as short as one week? As long as three years?
"It varied, it really varied depending on the children," Bachmann responded. "And we've never gotten into specifics about the children because we've always wanted to observe their privacy and that of their families."

I’ve spent some time with Michele. I AM so like her, a conservative woman with family values. I’m a hawk on defense, a defender of Israel, a Christian by faith and a lover of God, country and family. I believe that our freedom as Americans was uniquely given to us from God. it is a gift we must protect, for our children, and our children’s children.
Michele is strong, as she must be. I know she put it out there about how many foster children she raised. It just points out how strong she is in character. Yeah, I’m tired of the meme. It’s the MSM pushing the talking point, Chrissy Pissy included.
I know I am strong and I am a huge Michele Bachmann backer. I have climbed metaphorical mountains the last few months. The woman has what it takes in my view. I’d rather have a ‘mom’ in charge than the poseur Kenyan muslim trojan-horse we have now. Romney can shove it as far as I’m concerned as well. Newt too. Go away stale old crappers!

That Michelle Goldman is someone to watch out for ... I’ve seen her name appear a couple of times in attacks just in the past week. I don’t know about anyone else but when I hear someone say they ‘raised’ foster kids, I assume it was for an abbreviated period, not birth to adulthood. That’s not the nature of foster care. That would be adoption.
This is so frustrating, but predicatable on the part of the MSM. They are taking a great action taken by the Bachmanns and making it sound sinister, or that she lied about it, or somehow misrepresents what they did.
If Nancy Pelosi or some good liberal took in 23 foster kids, she would be praised as a cross between Joan of Arc and Mother Teresa. Only a good Democrat is allowed to be honored for taking in foster children. Since Bachmann is an evil Republican, the MSM has to find some irregularity or some problem with what they did and how they did it. We can’t praise them for practicing their Christian faith in a very profound personal way. Instead we have to denigrate it.
The MSM is so full of it.
The critics would be well served to leave it alone ~ these days we are in a position to GO AFTER THEM ANY TIME WE WANT.
They Feel as though this is the first they have heard of it. The MSM has no idea. Hell, I was raised on powdered milk in the days of the AK RR. but they haven’t a clue.
She never said that she raised 23 foster kids. What she said was that 23 foster kids have lived with them through the years. According to what I’ve read some of the foster kids were there for maybe a couple of weeks and others were there for up to two years. This is a classical example of the left responding to what was not said and building a case or rebuttal to what was never said. Maybe next we’ll be treated to stories about how Michelle’s children really aren’t hers.
To the Left, it’s about how many kids one doesn’t raise that’s rewarded.
great work there. we have to do that every single time a hit piece like this comes out about any of our candidates. Right away. No letting it sit out there like “seeing Russia from my porch” until it’s assumed OUR candidate said something s/he didn’t.

Yes, she has. She said it in an interview with Wolf Blitzer yesterday (Friday). I imagine she has said it before. I don’t know that it changes anything, but it’s not accurate to say that she’s never said she ‘raised’ 23 foster kids. She said it yesterday.

It’s a trivial difference. None of her critics have bothered to sign up for fostering. That’s ‘cause they hate kids.
Some freepers have used the word raised when attacking Bachmann here on FR.
I have already started countdown, when Gloria will come infront of camera with one of the 23 foster girl and claim she is ...... in her house.....
