NEW ORLEANS -- Rick Perry delivered an unapologetically socially conservative speech before a friendly crowd here.
We need to stop apologizing for celebrating life, the Republican Texas governor bellowed at the Republican Leadership Conference in a finger-pointing, finger-wagging and, at times, bombastic, speech.
Stop apologizing for wanting to stem the tide of the entitlement mindset, he boasted.
Our opponents on the left are never going to like us, so lets stop trying to curry favor with them, he said, before imploring the crowd to stand up. Lets speak with pride about our values. Lets stop this American downward spiral.
He acknowledged later with a smile, Im preaching to the choir here."
Perry did not address the speculation surrounding his potential run for president and did not take questions after his speech. Instead, after bounding off the stage to chants of, Run, Rick, run, pumping his fists, and shaking hands with audience members, he headed backstage and did not reemerge in the hallways here.
Of all the speakers of the three-day confab, Perry was the best-received, even more so than Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), who was a close second. Perry got a standing ovation when he took the stage, several times during his speech, and at the end.
Hes the man, one man said to a woman right after Perrys speech.

The vaccine was not forced on anyone. You could always opt out.
Perry has said the cervical cancer vaccine is no different than the one that protects children against polio.
If there are diseases in our society that are going to cost us large amounts of money, it just makes good economic sense, not to mention the health and well being of these individuals to have those vaccines available, he said.
Texas allows parents to opt out of inoculations by filing an affidavit stating that he or she objected to the vaccine for religious or philosophical reasons.

How’s the Economy in “skindiana”?
You got a flood of beaners up there stealing jobs? and tax money?
“The other vaccines, which are no longer enforced were targeted to all kids, not just females. If you are going to use big government it would always be good to have no financial stake in the outcome personally.”
Red Herring arguments all. Vaccines are not “targeted” at people; its a public health issue. Opponents of compulsory vaccination always, and for literally centuries made that always unproven charge that the officials involved have a personal financial interest in the vaccination program. The other vaccines are no longer enforced?! What planet are you from? They are most certainly enforced in practice, although waivers can be granted for specific reasons, including for Gardisil which is extremely effective in stopping the spread of HPV and thus cervical cancer in females. “Targeting females”. Preposterous.
"Stop apologizing" for wanting to stem the tide of the "entitlement mindset... Our opponents on the left are never going to like us, so let's stop trying to curry favor with them... stand up. Let's speak with pride about our values. Let's stop this American downward spiral."This is similar to Rush Limbaugh's advice at the 1995 swearing in of the Contract With America freshman class.
Nanny-state socialism like that can work. But some of us prefer Freedom.
If Governor Palin doesn't run, I think this could very well end up being the ticket.
I would love either ticket and I would love for them to shake up the political world and announce they are running as a team. No waiting until the Rep primary is over to announce the whole ticket.
Exactly, and lets hope people in SC remember that in 2014. I doubt they will. Sheep must love the slaughter.
I never understood why that was such a big deal. I guess people expect perfect conservatives who never go the wrong way on any issue. I have never seen or heard of one of those, even the great Ronald Reagan signed an abortion bill and an immigration amnesty during his career. People, even great people, sometimes make mistakes.
They are now going to convince you Rick is the second coming of Reagan. If you don’t believe that then you will just suck. LOL
I do wish they would try, at least, to spell Gardasil right.
Usually its because they listened to the advice of a liberal who is VERRRRY close to them.
The GOP needs somebody who is electable and I think Perry may be the man. It doesn’t look like Sarah is going to run. Perry has years of experience, Christian values, conservative principles, good business sense, no personal scandals, can speak without a teleprompter and let’s face it, he’s an attractive man with personal charisma. He is the sort of candidate who could charge up the base and charm independents.
I’m a pragmatic Texan and know his warts and missteps and can live with them before I can live through another four years of BO’s “change.” Right now I think he’s the best chance we’ve got.
So far, Perry appears likely to get in, and Palin appears not. You're right. It sure seems that way. But Palin doesn't have to get in for there to be a Perry/Palin ticket, does she?
Yep.
Rick Perry has had a lot of bad ideas, but he listens to the people when he is wrong and he has poked Obama hard in the eye several times.
He stands on the 10th amendment.
I must say, he pissed me off in his 2nd term, but I voted for him a 3rd time and he is doing a great job in this special legislation session.
I am glad I pulled the lever
I agree. This is going to be a problem for Perry, not to mention the fact that when he is nominated get ready for “he is Bush 2” from the left. His nomination will be a HUGE mistake in my opinion. We will be giving the left the old BUSH argument back. Dont think they are not drooling over this.
Good Lord! I would vote for Bill White or Farook Shami over Obama!
I almost voted for Kinky Friedman over Perry in his 2nd session, but that was just because I figured he would always be to stoned with his energy czar, Willy Nelson to get anything done, and the Congress would run the day to day legislation.
Seriously, Perry has been solid on energy independence and free trade.
He has a battle with taxes that none of us likes.
I know those bombastic, boasting Texans.
The lamestream labeled Sarah Palin and the tea party provincial in an article I read a couple of weeks back.
Provincial: person of local or restricted interests or outlook; a person lacking urban polish or refinement
You know not an elite!

Once upon a time in Austin I had a very lovely Jewish girlfriend from ‘Lonk’ Island. At one point she muttered something about Texans being provincial. So, I took her to Buda, Texas, and drove her around, showing her Texas Hatters, the feed store, a tractor dealership and so forth.
Increasingly puzzled she finally asked exactly what was the point of this tour. I told her, “I am sure a number of people here in Buda have been to New York. You are probably the only New Yorker to ever explore Buda. I don’t want anyone to be able to accuse you of being provincial.”
A lovely woman, in very many ways. Sadly, somehow it did not work out.
See my post on this thread. There is my answer to you.
