Haley Barbour urges Republicans not to let the tea party become a third party

From dynamic presidential hopefuls such as Rep. Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain to rank-and-file party activists from across the country, Republicans who gathered in New Orleans Friday all pledged their fealty to the cause of defeating President Barack Obama in 2012.

But Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, a former national party chairman, delivered a stern warning to Republican Leadership Conference delegates: Don't look for perfection in the potential nominees and don't even think about drafting a third-party candidate when the nomination fight is done.

"Don't get hung up on purity," he said. "In politics, purity is a loser. ... In this business, it is unity that wins elections. ... Barack Obama has worn out three sets of knee pads down his knees praying for the tea party to become a third party, because he can't lose."

Your logic is conventional (unlike Reagan) and flawed.

The belief that a Liberal/Socialist is acceptable, provided they have an “R” attached to their name, is not acceptable to me. How would you feel if Arlen Specter were the nominee, or how about one time Republican Hillary Clinton. Would they be acceptable to you as well?

Where you're going wrong in your thinking (IMO) is not recognizing who Conservatives true opponents are. They come in two flavors, Democrat and Republican.

In viewing our Country right now, I see a public suffering like nothing we've seen since the Great Depression. This suffering has been deepened and extended due to Government policy, both at the end of Bush's term and more so with Obama.

We are the victims of Socialism, exposing once again how failed an ideology it is. We are not going to fix it by hiring another person with a similar philosophy.

Going back to your beliefs, you maintain that we're better off with a Liberal with an “R” next to their name. Alright, say for the moment you're right. Can you name for me the last Liberal/Moderate Republican nominee to win the Presidency? I can't think of one, except perhaps Bush 41, although he certainly didn't run as a Moderate in 1988.

The best bargaining chip we as Conservatives have is the threat of a 3rd Party. The Republican Party establishment has proven time and time again they don't respect us. They don't even like us, and I'd bet you money some of them would be happier to see Obama reelected versus seeing a Conservative elected.

I read your posts with the common theme of one potential candidate you dislike. That's fine, I don't care as your entitled to your opinion. But, I believe she is far more popular than most pundits and media will ever let on, and she could be the means of a successful 3rd party, albeit a long-shot, run for the Presidency. As Conservatives, we're better off with that threat in place then not. IMO, it's already providing results in the name of another Texas Governor who's being pushed to jump into the race.

And I’m saying that is political rhetoric... almost none of them would actually believe that. They hate her because she’s a republican. They probably would say the same about you or me.

But if she was not a republican - they might come around.

The stakes are too high for faint hearts to prevail in the battle for liberty today. Barber's "politicians" will not preserve liberty for future generations of Americans. It will take statesmen of character and courage equivalent to that of the men of 1776 and 1787.

Where are they likely to be found? And, who will recognize and support them?

More importantly, is there time to restore to the "American mind" the ideas and principles of those individuals who first brought forth this Republic? The reference to "the American mind" is Thomas Jefferson's own description that the Declaration of Independence was a statement of the prevailing understanding of 1776.

Both my son and I worked tirelessly here in NH for the McCain PALIN ticket (Palin was the reason why). Only to have RINO McCain STAB us ALL in the back by walking (not running) a mediocre campaign, refusing to take a stand and tell the truth about Obamessiah while instead PRAISING him. Then after the election, TRASHING conservatives, TRASHING Christians, TRASHING Palin via surrogates and then really running a SLIME campaign against his conservative opponent for the AZ Senate.

I also refuse to work for, submit to or support RINO Romney (Obama light) no matter who his running mate is (Bachman). I am through voting for the lesser of two equally disgusting EVILS masquerading as saviors and "Angels of light".

It is impossible to support Temple Mormon Romney who believes that he is going to become a "god" who is going to live on his own planet. And that he is going to have habitual sex with his "celestial wife" who is going to pump out "spirit children" like the Alien queen in Aliens in order to populate the planet he rules with willing romney bot spirit children worshipers! I do not care how much "business acumen" Romney has ANYONE who believes and promotes this heresy:

If the Republican party wants the support of conservatives they are going to have to EARN it by promoting AND SUPPORTING a CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE. Otherwise, I along with my family and millions of others are going to sit this next election out. Let Obama get reelected, let the country further fall into decay and the hole. When all is said and done the overwhelming mess that is left will be solely laid at the feet of the Marxist, Socialist, Communist, anti-American, anti-Semitic, anti-Capitalist, BLACK RACIST Obamessiah and the Democratic party. They own this mess already and once Obamadeath care kicks in THEY OWN IT ALL.

No more "playing politics" and playing nice with the RINO Republican establishment who does not even have the GUTS to oppose the banning of the incandescent light bulb! If they want our support, if they want to WIN then they are going to have to give us CONSERVATIVE candidates who we can support, instead of the likes of RINO Robomni. And if Bachman does not have the fortitude, guts or decency of standing up against Romney Care when asked SIX times if she thought it was wrong then she is a POSER and does not deserve our support either since she cares more about not offending Romney in order to get a spot on his ticket than she cares about America and protecting and defending the Constitution.

Romney is not going to get the Republican nod to be be the GOP nominee!!! End of story!!!

I agree with that but don't let down my guard for a minute. Romney not only needs to be beaten in the primaries but beaten extremely and thoroughly, to teach him once and for all to stay the hell away from republican politics forever. I would have thought that he would have learned that lesson last time, paying million$ and million$ for every delegate that he got.

I think you could be right, but the better course would be for the Tea Party to become the Republican establishment by taking over the Party. Then we can get rid of RINO purity and progressive Republicans, the bane of liberty and prosperity.

Haley’s being a douche. He well knows the RINO’s are just as uncompromising as the conservatives in what they want. I’ll back down when they back down, and I’m not the bad guy because I won’t let them run me over.

Yes, you can be too pure. Standing up for principles isn’t being too pure. Nitpicking over insignificant details of executing those principles, or demanding everything now and having no plan to get there is being too pure. Macro v. micro. It’s not to hard to discern when you become so pure you cut off your nose to spite your face. It’s called common sense.

I agree with Haley on no third party. We are a two party system. If that means abolishing the GOP and going with a new party fine, but a third party should be nothing more than a threat and bargaining chip. The ones who genuinely want a third party are usually power hungry narcissists with their own agenda to push.

The Tea Party has it right. Take over the GOP, drive out the RINOs. We’ve made great strides this last election doing that. What people need to do is get up off their lazy asses and work to finish the victory. If anyone can’t see the progress made and is still pushing 3rd party, they need their asses whipped and sent to the closet, because they ain’t out for this country’s best interests.

Exactly! If the Republicans acted like the Conservatives they all claim (and lie) to be then there would be no 3rd party talk Haley. I may have to....and I’m gettin’ tired of.....having to vote Republican just because I don’t want to see a Demon win. I think others are feeling the same way. Will we ever go to a voting booth again and feel good about what choice we’ve made or will we all have to settle until our dying day?? Gosh, I miss Ronald Reagan. :(
