I was one of those rare species: a black Republican, the guy willing to spit into the wind of conventional thought, who was often showcased on camera at party events to prove inclusiveness.
But as a proud black man, I can no longer be a member of the Republican Party.
Being a Republican has long been a part of my personal and professional identities, so leaving the party is a difficult and emotional decision.
In 1998, as a young man searching for what I believed were shared values, I cut ties with the Democratic Party and became a Republican. Democrats, in my view, had become unwelcoming to those holding center-right views not in lockstep with the party, and it was my belief that through hard work, the Republican Party could be utilized as a vehicle for improving our community.
For the next 13 years, I dedicated myself to growing the conservative base of the Republican Party, and in the process bound myself in emotion and deed.

To Hell with the Republican Party. I’m a conservative.
Good *bleeping* riddance dude. Never heard of you and never care to again. BTW, I don’t believe you for a minute that you are a Republican or conservative.
Balderdash
Ironic he works for the NAACP, an organization that thrives on keeping the blacks suppressed while touting social justice BS and claiming they are freeing them....=.=
Actually I have no idea what cartoon the author's talking about now (no - I didn't click to the Sac Bee), but I doubt it could in any way have resemble the insults these 'cartoonists' have thrown against Republicans.
Two things:
1. How could a cartoon of unknown origin drive him out of the party?
2. What difference does it make anyway. I am sure there are thousands of so called, Republicans, who vote Dem every time. Many Pub Congressmen cannot be categorized any other way than to say they are openly Liberal Dems. They are all on the same side IMO. And that side is against the American people.
Baloney! Phony conservative, phony outrage.
Quitting the entire Republican Party because one individual promoted a racist cartoon is like quitting the entire Democrat Party because Anthony Wiener e-mailed a photo of his (bleep).
I don’t believe this for a New York minute. NAACP member and a conservative black? Stick this article where it don’t shine.
So white people (and Christianity) are fair game, but don't ever dare think of doing a cartoon about Mohammed or black people? Shaking my head and rolling my eyes.
I didn’t like sissies as a kid. I still don’t!
a member of the executive committee of the California State Conference of the NAACP.
And he calls himself a republican?
If your looking for racism and look long enough you will see it. Even in a drunken state.
I can’t see what is racist about the picture but hey, if you wanna get your Race Card International do it.
Thought they went out of business a couple of years ago but maybe you need a new schtick and have decided we are all against you or Barry for your skin tone, color, whatever.
We never think of it until you bring it up and here you have taken one picture that you have decided to brand as racist and your world view now implicates all others who are in the Tea Party, Beach Party or Costume Party.
You’re just looking for whatever validates your existence since what you were doing hasn’t amounted to anything. (Is that racist? /s)
Frankly, you are probably lying about this whole thing and have been a Democrat all along and you needed make up a story to brace yourself against Barry’s failures.
Why you hold on to this man as some hero or messianic creature is beyond me.
Your guy has an IQ lower than a grave diggers boots and he has just given an interview to Anne Curry stating how “uninvested” he and his family are to him being president.
A confident man wouldn’t utter those words and anyone who could call up Air Force 1 and take a trip would want to be in that position as long as they could.
But, not Barry. He has all but announced his desire to do something else and his family will be okay with that.
So buh, bye to you if were in the Republican party.
Over the past two years, we have seen Republicans use long-held racist imagery in portrayals of Obama. The president has been depicted as a communist witch doctor, a man inclined to plant watermelons on the White House lawn, and we watched in disbelief as his face was placed on an "Obama Buck Food Stamp" along with stereotyped pictures of fried chicken, barbecue ribs, Kool-Aid and the obligatory watermelon.Where to begin?
What does any of this have to do with public policy or conservative values? Here is a man who excelled academically at the finest schools in the world, has a wonderful in-tact family, worked hard and rose to become president of the United States. Yet in spite of his accomplishments, the president is still labeled an illegitimate, socialist, African witch doctor and has his face superimposed on a chimpanzee.
Assuming that such cartoons even appeared, how representative OF Republicanism are they? Are they common and popular in the party ... or ... (wait for it ...) are they immediately condemned -- and they result in the effective ostacization of the offending cartoon-creator?
Obama excelled in school? Let's see a transcript. The closest thing I've seen to evidence on that score is his Magna designation on his Harvard Law degree. (Now, bear in mind, it's not hard to be lazy and get As in many classes, if not all, even at HLS -- something I'm personally acquainted with.)
I was a hot Swedish waitress until a cartoon made me become a chubby old dude.
The “Race Card” is so universal that anyone with low enough IQ, looking to blame someone else for their lot in life or to shut down any discussion with which they disagree, can play it any time for any reason.
If you cannot support your position, play the card.
If you did not get the job, play the card.
If someone disagrees with you, play the card.
If you want to put your political enemy in a bad light, play the card (remember the e-mail “Journalist” which outed this strategy?)
If a cop catches you doing anything illegal, play the card.
If you did not get the service you wanted in a restaurant, play the card.
If your child gets in trouble in school, play the card.
See, it is so universal and so easy to play and you never run out. Must be nice to play the card for every failure in your life.
Personally, I don't care what this guy does. He leaves the Republican Party? Big deal. I don't care what color he is or what color Obama is. If that is important to someone that is their problem. Seems silly to me.
Are there an SacBee archived stories he wrote when he was an active conservative black, explaining why he is/was conservative and working to expand the conservative base? Or is he just useful when claiming racism in the GOP/conservative movement?
