Viewpoints: Racist cartoon of Obama forces me to leave GOP

I was one of those rare species: a black Republican, the guy willing to spit into the wind of conventional thought, who was often showcased on camera at party events to prove inclusiveness.

But as a proud black man, I can no longer be a member of the Republican Party.

Being a Republican has long been a part of my personal and professional identities, so leaving the party is a difficult and emotional decision.

In 1998, as a young man searching for what I believed were shared values, I cut ties with the Democratic Party and became a Republican. Democrats, in my view, had become unwelcoming to those holding center-right views not in lockstep with the party, and it was my belief that through hard work, the Republican Party could be utilized as a vehicle for improving our community.

For the next 13 years, I dedicated myself to growing the conservative base of the Republican Party, and in the process bound myself in emotion and deed.

...Ken Barnes is a small-business owner in Sacramento and a member of the executive committee of the California State Conference of the NAACP.

I don’t know. He’s been around a while and I always notice him because his screen name is so close to mine.

I think this is a temporary case of hurt feelings that he will get over. Think of all the fat people who’ve been insulted on this forum.

If we lose the fat vote we’re in big trouble.

Sounds to me like just another lying, mob rushing, "whey be mah handout?" Obamabot spinning fantastic fibs so people will think he's cool and involved, not to mention "oh-so-offended." What a pathetic non-entity.

If you ever watch C-Span when they are taking call-ins designated by Political Party (3 different numbers for Republicans, Democrats and Independents to use when calling in) you'll hear dozens of these same liars calling in on the "Republican" line, saying things like, "I'm a Republican, and I'm asahamed of the way my party is treating a fine president like Obama..."

They always have the lines so clogged that actual Republicans have a hard time getting through, not to mention, the GOP folks are usually at work, while these bums are all at home waiting for the mailman to bring their Food Stamps to trade for some "chronic."

Not buying it.

NAACP member in good standing ... and now member in great standing. Anytime the NAACP can get a shuckin/jivin member to slam the GOP, well, that one is promoted to inner circle status don’tchaknow. This is as phony as the NAACP and the democrap spittleparty.

More pretend indignation by another counterfeit republican.

It’s just a way to play the race card in a slightly different way.

Sorry Ken, We know you think you came up a new angle but it’s been done before.

Is he also one of those that call in to talk radio and start off with: “I voted for Bush, but ...”?

I’m going to guess “not a one”.

Racism is only racism when it’s carried out against blacks. That’s how it goes on the left.

Good *bleeping* riddance dude.

I think you just made his point.........sans the "Amish" comments.

Just out of curiosity, how many blacks are regularly posting here besides Trueblackman? Think they enjoy reading all the "Amish" comments whenever there is a black crime committed?

As a take off on the old Richard Pryor joke

“That water is cold!”

“Yeah, and deep, too.”

I would say

“His skin is black.”

“And thin, too.”

To Hell with the Republican Party. I’m a conservative.

You still need an established political party to make your voice heard. The Republican Party is our best shot. Even Ron Paul finally abandon his Libertarian/Independent classification and joined the Republicans for that reason.

Quit worrying about a stupid cartoon and decide what you want America to look like in 5 years. If you are a Republican one cartoon should not be able to turn you into a Democrat. Its a political philosophy. Either you believe in small government, states rights and strict interpretation of the Constitution or you don’t. A racist cartoon should have nothing to do with it.
