Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) warned President Barack Obama on Tuesday that Latinos will not regard as acceptable a move to make the E-Verify system of checking prospective employees immigration status mandatory for all U.S. firms, as urged by Republicans. Gutierrez, the Chicago-born son of Puerto Rican parents, gave the warning at a telephone press conference ahead of Wednesdays hearing of the House Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement about a bill to impose E-Verify nationwide.
That bill is being pushed by the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Texas Republican Lamar Smith, and Immigration Subcommittee Chair Elton Gallegly (R-Calif.).
E-Verify, in force since 1997, has been harshly criticized by unions and pro-immigrant groups that say it criminalizes immigrants and is ineffective. If the measure is passed by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, it will depend on the Senate, where Democrats are in the majority, for Smiths controversial bill to be approved.
The danger exists that the most conservative Democratic senators will support the measure, Gutierrez acknowledged Tuesday, urging Obama to promise he will veto the bill, if necessary.
The presidents Hispanic advisors must make him understand that signing such a proposal before the 2012 elections is not acceptable to the Latino community, the congressman said, stressing the importance of the Hispanic vote for Obamas reelection.
E-Verify allows businessmen to consult databases of the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration to check whether job applicants have the legal authorization to be hired.
Hispanic activists complain that the system is riddled with errors, so that it affects legal immigrant workers more than the undocumented....
Gutierrez believes Republicans have the false hope that the 11 million undocumented workers and their families will leave if we make things difficult. Thats a fantasy. Theyre not going to leave, they have their life here, he said...
In addition, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on June 6 that states may oblige companies to use E-Verify.
Fine, lets just deport every freaking illegal alien we find.
Someone should have done this with the Obamas a couple of years back.
So illegals as a special class of law breakers get a free pass. Bull shit.
That’s just too frickin’ bad.
still waitin’ for someone to e-verify dunham.

Why leave when they get freebies from the gringos they hate?
open borders - anarchy ping
It criminalizes illegal immigrants because it is effective.
No hay problema. No hay e-verify, no hay trabajo. Adios Jose, Luis, or whatever name you are using today.
Fill an endless stream of airliners to Mexico City. It would be good
for the airline industry and money well spent to get the illegals of
the taxpayer’s back. The return flights could carry goods we purchase
from Mexico to make the arrangement mutually beneficial.
I am not big on accepting illegal alien entitlement leeches either.
LOL. Like Hussein would enforce it anyway.
Claro. La razón son así que enfurecido es que saben que será eficaz. Ojalá que this bill becomes law.

Nice attempt to hijack the thread. Cada loco con su tema.
Puerto Ricans have about as much street-cred in the illegal immigration movement as hillbillies from Tennessee. Puerto Ricans are born citizens and, so, have no dog in this fight. Only Puerto Rican politicians who need to expand create their base would try to make it seem otherwise.
Besides, most Latins absolutely hate the Puerto Rican accent. Of course, clueless Anglo Dems know nothing of this.
Bullshiite. He knows that without jobs the illegals will self deport. Their life is in Mexico, and that is where their allegiance lies.
If it was a fantasy, why be concerned? Traitorous scum.
Don't bother to answer you ditzy Romneybot, no need to strain your brain.
Gutierrez and the rest of his fellow traveler socialist crook baby killing degenerate perverted scumbags who despise capitalism and the Founding Fathers and hate Christians and middle America ought to be rounded up and shipped to Venezuela along with the rest of the democrats in Congress.
And no speakie spani, that's why we invaded Mexico City, and should probably do so again.
Gutierrez believes Republicans have the false hope that the 11 million undocumented workers and their families will leave if we make things difficult. Thats a fantasy. Theyre not going to leave, they have their life here, he said...

Well we’re told they only come here to make a better life for their poor, starving families. If they cannot get work and cannot support their families because we make things difficult, why wouldn’t they leave? Could it be because a lot of them are criminals, drug runners and other low life scum?
