China's 'Bon in the USA' Frenzy (Chinese Anchor Babies)
yahoo.com ^ | June 15, 2011 | Zhang Yan

Snips from Excerpt Only Website: When Liu Li boarded a plane for the United States, she had a little bit of makeup on, was wearing a loose dress, and had her hair up. She tried to hold her handbag in front of her belly in a natural way, just as the middleman had taught her. She was trying to look as calm as any wealthy Chinese lady would look when travelling abroad. But Liu Li couldn't help feeling terribly nervous: she was six months pregnant when she left for the United States, where she wanted to give birth to an American citizen.

And why not the Chinese too? I mean, every freakin’ body else is doing it to America! Get knocked up, come over here, stay illegally, pop out a tot, and you’re guaranteed an indeterminate stay to take care of the newest “automatic” American citizen... Anyone with a grain of common sense KNOWS our Founding Fathers would have put a DEAD stop to this crap a generation OR MORE ago — starting at the BORDERS....

America needs to muster the political will to fix this at the Constitutional level if it feels it is a sufficient problem.

Most Americans who are aghast at the invasion of Mexicans and others who saunter across the border or overstay visas, would be thrilled if the so called “anchor baby” were the worst issue the country had to face in this vein. How many foreign families bent on squatting in the US have the patience to wait out an “anchor baby’s” ability to sponsor?

I agree with you, but,,,, I don’t think she’ll be staying here. These Chinese have a somewhat different motive than the mezzicans. They’re not coming here for freebies.

The first time I ever saw the term “anchor baby” was fifteen or more years ago in a story similar to this one, except the woman was a South Korean. This has been going on for who knows how many decades. It’s not just Latinos, though they are a huge portion of the total.

It is absolute insanity that this has been allowed to go on at all.

They seem to me to be coming over here to escape their oppressive government and it’s oppressive policies concerning child birth.

Grace,
“They seem to me to be coming over here to escape their oppressive government and it’s oppressive policies concerning child birth.”

In a way Grace, but,,, these are wealthy Chinese. They have no intention of staying here to collect on freebies. It seems they want their children to have a way to get out of China, if the need arises. I have several Chinese-born friends. They all learned English before they even applied to come here,,, legally, I might add. All of them are now proud American citizens. They’re all also Christens. And Conservative voters, who love the fact that they can vote, and that their votes count. The men are engineers, entrepreneurs, and business men. Not lawn mower guys. IOW, the kind of people we should welcome with open arms!

My apology for the typo.

Tanuki, can you tell me if the Nagasaki area was impacted by the recent earthquake and tsunami? I haven't heard from my exchange students (born in Kagoshima) who moved there.

I believe the Chinese don't trust their own government, and are planning an escape route, just in case rich capitalists get suddenly unpopular. There was a post just last week about rich Chinese planning to emigrate, over 50% of them!

Having a child who is a US citizen (!) would probably simplify getting a visa...

One thing i admire about Chinese culture and this applies to most all far east Asian cultures is that they make for damned sure that their children excel in learning and set the goal for them to support themselves after they leave the nest. That and they don’t fall into the “victim trap” other cultural minorities in this country fall into.

Other cultures, even our own could learn some things from this example.

“they make for damned sure that their children excel in learning”

My lady friend’s daughter, the abdo-lute light of my life, entered college at 16. Dual major, Chemistry, and Bio-mechanical engineering. Her education, she’s now in Master’s stuff, was completely paid for by grants, etc.. Her education cost her Mother nothing! Except for some taxes, as all the grants weren’t tax free. She even has grants for “walking around” money! Companies are competing with each other to hire her. I have no worries about her future!

Again, I ask, Is it Natural for the child of a foreigner, born in a foreign land not to be considered to have the same citizenship as the parents? Should a country be stealing the citizenship of another country’s children? Americans who give birth abroad would not stand for it. There children born abroad are American citizens. Why we do not allow children of foreigners born in American, abroad from their homeland, to be considered born in USA, yet a citizen of the country(countries) of their parents is beyond me. It is wrong. It is kind of like baby snatching. The U.S. steals the citizenship of foreigners born abroad in the US.

Yes it is natural for a child to be of the same citizenship as the parents. It makes no sense whatsoever otherwise. Anytime we've traveled outside the US, travel documents to the country or island we've visited have had provisions specifically addressing the duration of the trip and language about the temporary nature of the visit.

By marginalizing American sovereignty, those in government intent on a globalist vision for America's future are ignoring the basic tenets set forth in the Constitution and depreciating citizenship as if it were a prize in a cracker jacks box that everyone gets for the lowest price. Citizenship in America should be highly valued and not handed out because someone chose to have their child on US soil when their own citizenship and loyalties are elsewhere.

If we’re going to change the principle that children born on American soil are entitled to American citizenship with very few exceptions (basically foreign diplomats and foreign military personnel sent here on official business by their governments), it would change American immigration law dating back at least to the late 1800s and probably earlier. It may require a change in the Constitution.

Chinese “anchor babies” are nothing new. This was happening a century ago on the West Coast and was part of the reason for the Chinese Exclusion Act, which also excluded almost anyone else of Asian ancestry. I think virtually everybody today would agree the Chinese Exclusion Act was little more than anti-Asian bigotry, and there was no legitimate purpose for it. Let’s just say that while there are bad people in all races, Asians as a whole, by any demographic standards, are far from being a seriously problematic ethnic group.

I wish the worst thing we had to worry about was wealthy pregnant Chinese women coming to the United States so their children could become American citizens and allow them to flee China if their country returns to its Maoist past. I’d take several million of those women, plus their families, if we could send an equal number of our Maoist Democrats over to China as a fair trade.
