(Reuters) - The Texas Senate early on Wednesday passed a measure pushed by Governor Rick Perry aimed at cracking down on cities that provide sanctuary to illegal immigrants.
"Drug traffickers and transnational gangs should think twice before they step foot in Texas," Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, who presides over the Senate, said in a statement. "Prohibiting sanctuary city policies will make the apprehension, detention and deportation of dangerous criminals more uniform -- keeping us all safer and Texas more secure."
The measure now heads to the House, which passed a similar bill during the regular legislative session that ended May 30. That measure died because Senate Democrats blocked it. But lawmakers are now in a special legislative session, and since different rules apply, Senate Democrats were unable to stop it this time. Both chambers have Republican majorities.
The measure would prohibit local governments from banning law enforcement officers from asking about the immigration status of people who are lawfully detained or arrested.

We would have if Guv Goodhair had any gonads! He is doing what he does best, primping in front of the cameras and trying to talk tough (a little anyway).
There were at least five strong anti-illegal immigration bills hung up in the House during the regular session of the legislature this year. Perry could have demanded that they get any one of them to his desk for his signature at any time, but he never once asked for one.
In the end, he asked for (and got) the least politically unpalatable anti-illegal bill during the special session, which is the anti-sanctuary cities bill (which is sure to be hung up in the courts for a long time to come).
Perry has no political courage, and should not be at the top of any conservative American's list for president.
Two or three years ago, the local McDonald's they'd go PC or whatever and put their drive-thru menu in Spanish. Guess they got told what for because it was down within days. Of course, you can't go to the What-a-Burger at noon because the illegals congegate there and make it very plain gringos aren't welcome. It's amusing when the high school kids visit back at the middle school and make comments about how many hispanics there are there now. Considering they just left middle school 3-4 years before it shows how many have come over. When 6th graders can name gang leaders and tell of their activities proves the border is not safer than it ever has been and proves Perry et al are a bit late to the party.
It “looks” like a good step and probably only done to make Perry “look” tough if he throws hit sombero in the ring but I’m not holding my breath it being enforced.
I hope Texans are smart enough to see through this ball-less soft around the middle RINO. We already have enough girly men RINO's in this race already without adding an even larger one.
Which is why I will NEVER support Rubio for President or Vice President.
Colorfully said, and your point is well made.
What's really sad about Perry, is that he became a Republican for all the wrong reasons. Unlike most people who switch, he didn't come to the right through personal enlightenment or realization.
He moved right because of political opportunism, and it still shows. I know little of his history, but I can see that in him from a mile away.
“Once, this special session is over...Perry will announce his candidacy for President.”
I always lose at the casinos, so here’s my odds - 7 to 5 against him running. While I was trying to find the true LV odds, I stumbled across this claptrap from the Daily Kos:

Oh, he’ll run...he has been setting this up for a while...all the heavy weight oil men in Texas...are gearing up because Perry will soon announce his candidacy...and they’re behind him...we’re talking lots of money for Perry’s campaign from them...[I have a friend out of Louisiana and he has already been ask to be part of Perry’s campaign.]
I’ll bet you a Shiner Bock that he doesn’t run. If by some miracle you win that bet, I’ll bet you a Lone Star Light that he comes in third or worse.
I know your friend out of Louisiana (I believe he is with BP) and he told me that he told Rick, “No way” will I be a part of your campaign. LOL
I am a Sarah Palin supporter...IF she ever announces [I am doubtful, she'll even run for president]...I'll work on her campaign.
And your perfect, 100% pure candidate is...?
IMO, there’s less here than meets the eye. Let the State try to enforce it within Houston.
Yet Perry wouldn’t support Arizona’s illegal immigration law. Puzzling.
Let the Marxist screaming begin.
Amen and amen.
The only way this conservative Texan will vote for Perry again is if he is the only option to Obama.
He’s one step below Pepe le Pew in my book.
“Prohibiting sanctuary city policies will make the apprehension, detention and deportation of dangerous criminals more uniform — keeping us all safer and Texas more secure.”
Good.
But why stop there? Go ahead and apprehend and deport illegals that aren’t part of the narco-drug cartels or Mexican thug gangs—the ordinary illegal aliens here to take American jobs, get free education, bankrupt hospitals by free use of emergency rooms as their health care plan, sign up for every welfare program imaginable, etc., etc.
Perfect time then to encourage them to leave.
Love it! Thank you Texas Senate.
