Debbie Wasserman Schultz: ‘We own the economy’

Democrats are ready to take responsibility for the state of the economy and they deserve credit for putting it on the right track, the party’s chairwoman, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, said on Wednesday.
“We own the economy. We own the beginning of the turnaround and we want to make sure that we continue that pace of recovery, not go back to the policies of the past under the Bush administration that put us in the ditch in the first place,” Wasserman Schultz told Mike Allen at a breakfast hosted by POLITICO’s Playbook.
The economy, she said, “has turned around” since President Obama took office, with steady job growth evident even if the pace leaves something to be desired.
Republicans have ridiculed Democrats’ claims of economic success in the wake of disappointing jobs numbers and an uptick in the unemployment rate.
Wasserman Schultz said Democrats aren’t in need of a new story to tell about the economy because they’ve put the right policies in place. “I don’t think it’s about what we say, it’s about what we do.”
She said Democrats’ actions demonstrate their commitment to the middle class while Republicans’ do not. Though she commended several individual Republicans by name — including her home state colleague, Rep. Daniel Webster — Wasserman Schultz said the party’s leadership in the house is beholden to an extreme faction.

Don’t these people think through the ramifications before they speak? I mean, it’s clear that when the head of the DNC says they own the economy, then the Democrats now OWN THE ECONOMY. Also, when the President blames ATM’s for the loss of jobs, that’s just a silly, unfeeling way of saying “I really don’t care whether you’re working or not”. Good grief.
Sounds to me like Debbie is saying the Dems own the good part of the economy but any bad news is part of the hangover from Bush policies. And once we head into 2012 still mired in recession, she’ll forget about even these feeble statements.
Basically, Debbie is a Partisan Robo-Pol. Wind her up and she says whatever she needs to say at that moment to attack Republicans without any regard to historical fact.

I never allow the weekly dose of unexpectedly bad economic news to dampen my enthusiasm for the high performance expectations coming from all the Ivy League models. There are some surprising discrepancies, but overall, the economy is just about perfect, except for anomalies with unemployment, job creation, manufacturing, inventories, foreclosures, housing starts, housing prices, inflation, and uncertainty about future regulatory burdens, but everything else in the past 30 months has been all for the best and could not possibly have been any better.
Hope someone has an audio or better yet a video of this stupid statement. Sure could be used against them in a campaign ad.
Let’s see, the Bush administration lowered taxes to get us out of the tech bubble collapse and tried to rein in Fannie/Freddie but was rebuffed by the congress. Yep, O owns the economy along with his congress (mostly both parties).
Whatever she is, and smart doesn’t need to apply, she’s set up the Democrats for a real political problem come the election as long as this is played properly. Not only does it take ownership of the economy away from the Bush years, it takes Obama’s main talking point, that it’s all Bush’s fault, out of play.
