What is Chris Matthews up to? The MSNBC anchor, who once trashed Michele Bachmann as a "zombie" and a "nutcase," on Tuesday praised the Congresswoman as "poised, informed and serious." Touting Bachmann's performance in Monday's Republican presidential debate, he gushed that the Representative did "great."
The Hardball host, who once battled with Bachmann and wondered if she was "hypnotized," hyped that the debate saw "the emergence of a star." He added, "[Bachmann] was, of course, created here. She came off as...poised, informed and serious. Could she be the candidate that Sarah Palin was supposed to be?"
In an amusing moment, Matthews prefaced a question to Jennifer Donahue of the Huffington Post by proclaiming, "I'm not an active Republican." Regular viewers of MSNBC probably already know that.
A partial transcript of the June 16 segment can be found below:
5pm
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Maybe the biggest story from last night was not Romney's cool or Pawlenty's retreat, but the emergence of a star, Michele Bachmann. She was, of course, created here. She came off as poised, informed, that's right, Gene, poised, informed and serious. Could she be the candidate that Sarah Palin was supposed to be?
5:19
MATTHEWS: Well, there's a woman, person, a friend not afraid of the mainstream media.
MICHAEL STEELE: That's right. She's not.
MATTHEWS: No hiding over in Fox land. First of all, what did you think of her performance last night? Because we all thought she was great.

If you missed the Bachmann campaign attacks on Palin this week, then you need to get on the net and catch up.
He will do anything to prevent Palin from getting the nomination. He knows she will take zero down by a landslide.
I like Bachmann also and want to give her a chance. Matthews is right, Bachmann wades into those liberal programs with no fear and aquits herself well. Palin should go on Hardball herself if she feels somehow Bachmann is getting too much attention over on MSNBC.
Oh I agree..the second she had her hired goon go after Palin, who has supported her for many years, I just got a bad feeling about her..I am not into the backstabbing, especially since Sarah isn’t the enemy here, she is not the one Michele or her goon should be going after. If Michele had gone after Romney, I would be fine with that since Romney is basically the white Obama, he is who the media wants to be the nominee, but going after Sarah was just wrong, if she was hoping to score points off of that it didn’t happen
Do you have reason to think that Palin has such thoughts?
Obviously a dig on Palin.
No. But then the Palin supporters on here shouldn’t complain about Matthews giving positive coverage to Bachmann.
To be honest, a number of responses on this thread are delusional, talking about how Palin couldn’t select Bachmann as VP with no executive experience. My goodness, Michelle has her law degree, was a tax lawyer and has been in Congress now for a few terms. All while helping the 23 or whatever children. And Bachmann has no fear of any interviews or interviewers unlike Palin.
I’d say she probably has more depth of real experience than Palin frankly.
I don’t think so. I think a lot of people need a reality check though, many seem to have bounced.
Libtards are great at using words that are not quantifiable. Are you a libtard?
So you were just posting absolute fantasy nonsense, I’m glad you own up to it, but why post nonsense at all.
The rat is Chris,Get out of the Communion Chris shame on you for being pro-abort.
Ah yes. The name calling now commences from a small group of Palinites since they have nothing else to fall back on when someone on this site isn’t drinking the kool aid.
What in Michelle Bachmann’s resume says to you “unqualified” on either an experience scale or a conservative political scale. She is as conservative as Palin and probably has more experience.
Where Palin has her beat is number of schools. Michelle only attended three schools and got three degrees compared to the six colleges Palin went to./ s
LOL Rollins made one comment one time, recanted it and two weeks youre still suckling that sow.
And you’re still covering for the fact that Bachmann has a Rollins as her manager. The fact she PICKED him in the first place says a lot about her. The fact she didn’t fire him when she had the chance, says even more.
How stupid can you be, in the poll released yesterday, Palin was #2, ahead of every declared candidate except Mitt. And Rollin’s thinks it’s a good idea to take on the grizz, WHEN SHE ISN’T EVEN IN THE FIGHT. WORLD CLASS STUPID.
Damn shame Bachmann has wasted all the education. She has NOTHING of substance in the US House to show for it. Facts is facts. Sorry you can’t deal.
Rollins is going to end up killing her career in politics.
Agree, CM should never be given post-time here.
Bachmann has no illusions about becoming POTUS in 2012. Her goal is to get enough attention and show enough money-raising to be picked as the VP running mate. And being a “balance” to whoever is the nominee (hoping this is not Palin or Pawlenty).
Bachmann’s goal is to win as a VP in 2012, and then win to POTUS in 2016. Merely becoming VP would be good enough for her ambitions.
It’s a perfectly sensible strategy, and it has a good chance of succeeding.
it’s easy... bachman and romney are working together to destroy the rest of the field and to form a romney bachman ticket later... like the reagan bush ticket but nothing like the reagan bush ticket... just rivals that will join to unite the party...
the misunderestimate the tea party peops...
