As the grandfather of a recent Fort Benning graduate now at Fort Gordon for advanced training this really sticks in my craw.
National Honor Society students are rightly honored at graduation for their academic achievement at the school from which they are graduating -- a school-related accomplishment.

And then you tell them NO, you cannot wear your “San Francisco gay academy of buttlove and war protest” sash. The Military is the sole exception. They are the ONLY ones who might be dead in a few months,,, for everyone else. The schools arent doing this to be fair,,, they hate the military.
The bizzare idea that every student deserves equal respect at that moment is similar to the way they wont let kids keep score in the baseball game. Theres nothing wrong with publically recognizing them, and refusing it to other activities.

Yes for those going into the military. They should have special recognition.
Don't be silly....NHS students have EARNED ACADEMIC HONORS....they are NOT being recognized for anything non-academic, nor anything in the future.

Please,, comparing the captain of a ship to glorified babysitters? Are you really wanting principals and teachers to have NON-REVIEWABLE AUTHORITY? Please tell me you are kidding?
If it *remotely* made sense 50 years ago,, i suggest you consider that todays teacher entered the womens studies and teaching program at State U, three or four years AFTER 9/11. They are a statist, politically correct menace that SHOULD be watched VERY closely.

You certainly do not grow RESPONSIBLE authority by taking all responsibility from it, and worse by tying it up with byzantine and incomprehensible regulation and volumes of “procedures to be followed”.

I find this sad. However, I wonder how the military would react if someone wanted to wear their high school graduation sash during boot camp graduation. That is why I don’t get to hung up on these stories. The situation would be the exact same if it was a student wanting to wear something different for their boot camp graduation and the military said no.
It is called uniformity. They shouldnt have gone against the graduation code. How about two peeps showing up wearing brown uniforms from obama’s americorpse?

National Honors Society was earned in high school which is why it is appropriate. Boot Camp graduation is not part of the high school life. There is a big difference.

Military service is a personal choice, absent the draft.
Both my grandfathers, my father, myself, my son, and soon my grandson all chose the military after school. Our military service had NOTHING to do with high school....separate parts of our lives...ridiculous to consider otherwise.
Should athletes wear sashes? Band members? Eagle Scouts (son & grandson)? Blood donors? GLBT's? Obama voters? Special Ed?
To allow recognition for future actions runs counter to the purpose of graduation celebrating accomplishment.
By the way how’s recuiting of the class of 2011 going, haven’t heard a thing, mighty quite, and the class of 2007. Are they checking out over the repeal of DADT? Maybe the lack of info is supposed to tell us something.
I was recently at my nephews high school graduation (Lebanon, OH) and they had all the graduates going into the military stand up and be recognized and they were given a standing ovation.

Except that they are not celebrating graduation from basic training, but enlistment in the U.S. Army. Which they did while in high school. Not to mention that you might be surprised how many people for whom boot camp graduation IS a part of high school life. I’ve been working in schools, including high schools, for much of the past decade.

That is interesting and certainly a change from when I was in high school. There was two Sailors going through boot camp between junior and senior year and then finishing up high school. I did not know about the program or I would have done that too.
