Vietnam has called on the US and other nations to help resolve the escalating territorial disputes in the resource-rich South China Sea, in a move likely to anger Beijing, which opposes what it sees as outside interference.

Tensions between China and Vietnam continued to rise over the weekend, ahead of live-fire drills planned by Vietnam’s navy on Monday on an islet around 20 miles from the coast of central Vietnam, which Hanoi described as “routine”.

“China is running an information campaign to blind people,” said Pham Gia Minh, a 55-year-old investment consultant who attended a protest outside the Chinese embassy in Hanoi. “We have to let people understand that we want peace but when the aggressor comes we will stand up to them.”

In addition to China and Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Taiwan claim some or all of the territory in the contested area of the South China Sea, which is believed to contain vast oil and gas reserves and incorporates key trade routes and abundant fish stocks.

Well, Democrats have been aiding Hanoi since at least 1972.

Somewhat. The Chinese knew they were facing reserve troops as Vietnam had everyone down on the Cambodian border so they went in easy. The reserves were tougher than expected but China had a few hundred thousand men to throw at the problem and were able to overwhelm the Vietnamese. The Chinese decided they didn’t want a baby to rock and came back home.

If China wants Vietnam, it gets it.

Vietnam wants our support? Here’s some support.....and here’s the bird with the other hand. That’s called The Double Eagle. The Vietnamese Navy is conducting a live-fire exercise? Wow. I hope the water is calm enough for them to get four or five skips off those flat rocks they’ll be throwing.

Any bulwark against China is welcomed, IMO.

However... don’t look for any anti-China stance from this current regime.

Vietnam wants our support?

Our allies against China will be Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

War is the solution our enemies have chosen. Let’s give it to them till they cry “enough”.

We should care a great deal. The South China Sea is a vital strategic region including not only potentially vast oil reserves but the primary shipping lanes between the middle east and the rest of Asia including allies like Japan, the Phillipines, and the west coast of South America.

Allowing China to assert hegemony over international waters sets a dangerous precedent which renders our own security precarious.

Sure - when they turn over the guards from the Hanoi Hilton - until then - pound sand.

Because they tortured our soldiers?

Vietnam offered us Cam Ranh Bay, when the Soviet Union collapsed, that’s how scared they are of the Chinese.

I will say that the one thing Vietnam did, was to get rid of that murderous Khmer Rouge regime, which was backed by China. Vietnam was in the Soviet camp, during the Cold War.

Agreed. By historical accounts, even the battle-hardened Vietnamese soldiers were sickened by the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge. That's going a LONG way!

The Vietnamese are tough cookies. The Mongols tried twice to take over the country and were soundly beaten both times. We should let them tussel withthe Chi-coms. A good distraction to keep them from mischief making.

I'm sure there are at least TWO, Bottom-Feeding, SCUMBAGS, who I am embarrassed to admit are fellow Vietnam Vets (BUT NEVER BROTHERS) John "The Rat Bastard TRAITOR" Kerry, and Juan McPain who will support anything which will benefit our former enemies

Anyone who followed the POW/MIA hearings in which BOTH were responsible for having let the families of our Missing Warriors out to dry and were even "Nasty" to the witnesses during the hearings; insuring nothing more would come of them, all so that this would facilitate "our" normalization and trade agreements with these Commie Sons-a-Bitches.

Maybe McCain, Kerry and some other vets can "forgive and forget," but not I.

Hey you barbaric bastards, now you want our assistance?

F YOU and the Ho Chi Minh Trail you rode in on!!!

They figured out the hard way that being a Soviet satellite didn’t work out well for them. Sucks for them that they bet on the wrong superpower.

It has been said that democracies should go to war reluctantly and fiercely.

The US has not followed that rule since 1945.

True and the chicoms did us no favors during the Korean war, either.

Dear Mr. Vietnamese ambassador,

You did apologize to us for what you did to our POW’s before you asked for our help, didn’t you? Or did we just miss that?
