It got removed from breaking. That's crazy. If it is an eruption, this is a huge deal, and FR would have original content. Besides being the first to report it.

Eh, probably got removed from breaking because there's no actual "news" source yet. Which is sort of archaic.

Yeah...
Plume is continuing to grow rapidly. Back edge hasn’t moved. Definitely an eruption.

One I will never forget was back in 2002 during the Moscow Opera House siege, where the Chechnyan jihadists took 850 hostages. There was a FReeper living in Moscow who happened to spot the Russian Spetsnaz forces arrival, and reported it from his window where he was able to see a lot of what was going on. His live reports preceded even those of the Russian media, which he was also able to translate and report for us once their media began coverage.
Things like that are FR at its best, imo. I don’t recall in the past that original or exclusive breaking news content required a news source. That’s too bad.

Huh. I was just reading about the ease of dating early human fossils due to the several layers of volcanic ash in the sedimentary strata in Ethiopia. That sure is a big caldera. Doesn’t bode well for the people in the region, as terribly poor as it already is.

The plume is over 200 miles long now. Just read elsewhere that the nearest city is < 50 miles away and has a population of 40,000.

This Sat loop gives a good idea where the ITZ is in relationship to the volcano.
It’s an eruption.

This is one of the more desolate spots on Earth. The record temperature is just a toke above 157 degrees F !!!!
I doubt there's even anybody around anywhere ~ at the moment there continue to be debates about WHICH of a number of volcanos might be blowing up.

Looking around the area on Google Earth shows many different volcanoes in the immediate area:
Asseb, Dubbi, Afdera, Alayta, Dabbahu, Ale Bagu, Hayli Gubbi, Erta Ale, Borale Ale, Alu, and Gada Ale to name a few.

If you look at a cloud map overlaid with the seismicity and the Smithsonian volcano locations on Google Earth, the plume definitely seems to be from the vicinity of Nabro.

The Apostle Paul said it was imminent and that was 2,000 years ago.

Age slows my memory but I do recall a long running series of almost daily 4.5+ tremors in the Gulf of Aden (at a plate edge) that recently tapered off.

That’ll work then because some of our “breaking” news is that old.

Right, I was just looking around the area and saw all of the volcanoes in the region. Google Earth even has the current earthquakes located on the map for me. What a barren place to try to survive. If you have Google Earth, look to the North West about 110 miles to the old volcano Dallol. That volcano seems to have Yellowstone like formations.
