These are massive earthquakes not normally seen with modern volcanoes, IMO.
5.7 isn't massive really, but pretty powerful for a volcanic earthquake.
When Katmai in Alaska erupted in 1912 there were 12 magnitude 6.0-7.0 earthquakes associated with it.

This thing is massive.By diameter of rim it looks like about 12.6 Square Miles . . . if the whole thing is involved. Will be interesting to see how this develops.

Yeah its a caldera....I am thinking it will be eventually just called Nabro....least the quakes suggest that was the culprit.
Just found a scientific paper on Nabro (can't link to it as it's through an academic account, as I'm in grad school.)
It's entitled "Large magnitude silicic volcanism in north Afar: the Nabro Volcanic Range and Ma'alalta volcano" in the Bulletin of Volcanology.
Anyway, the authors found an ignimbrite sheet associated with Nabro with a volume of 20 to 100 cubic kilometers (Tambora was 50 cubic kilometers.)

Im not 100% confident its an eruption plume. Yea, the sat map is either off a bit or the plume. We should soon have confirmation from additional sources. Sure looks like it erupted though. May be some kind of atmospheric phenomena occurring in conjunction with the earthquake swarm.

It got removed from breaking. We have a strange definition of breaking news here. I suspect someday The Second Coming will also be removed from there.

The place is really the middle of nowhere and hell on earth.
However, an eruption should be visible from Djibouti, where we have a substantial military base.
If anyone has an family members over there, may want to give them a ping, if possible.

Thanks for the education on the associated volcanic earthquake magnitudes. By modern, I guess I meant since I've been following them which hasn't been for that long. :)

Just refreshed the sat loop. It’s still growing rapidly and it sure seems independent from surrounding cloud/vapor concentrations.

There’s no advisory yet from the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Center, though, which is responsible for Africa.
I’m about 99.999% sure it’s an eruptive column, though.
