AUSTIN (KXAN) - Governor Rick Perry renewed his disaster proclamation Saturday for a sixth time since it was originally issued in December of 2010.
Perrys office issued a release Saturday saying the renewal was due to ongoing threat from wildfires across the state.
The proclamation covers 254 counties in Texas and allows for necessary resources to help fight the fires and aid in response efforts.
I am thankful for the ongoing sacrifice from first responders as they continue fighting the wildfires that are ravaging Texas homes and property, Gov. Perry said. I urge the federal government to quickly grant Texas the assistance we have requested and that Texans deserve to fight these fires. In the meantime, Texas will continue providing all resources possible to respond to one of the worst wildfire seasons in our states history.
In an April 15th letter sent to President Barack Obama , seeking federal aid, Texas was denied federal aid.
Local and state firefighters have responded to more than 11,600 fires that have destroyed more than 460 homes and burned more than 2.8 million acres, an area the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined.
A few months ago, we were drowning here in Central Kentucky. It rained all but 7 days in April, when we average 3.5" but ended up with 13.9".
Now it has completely dried up, so the grasses and undergrowth that shot up like crazy in April and early May are all dried up and perfect tinder for the smallest spark.
One of my coworkers is one of the deputy chiefs of a volunteer fire department and his radio has been going nuts this past week. On Thursday, there were four different fires in the six hours we worked together, plus he said that there had been two or three earlier in the day.
He's going to be spending our money all through his campaign.....I hear he's got billions of the stimulus set to go to reduce mortgage debts for some.
We need HEARINGS on why Texas is not getting FEMA help. Hearings!
dang .....well be careful and start spreading the rumors now that people with fireworks will be shot on sight !!...:o)
Honestly there are still folks that will throw out a lit cigarette around here. Problem is they are chased down in most cases of folks call the law on em. Lots of silly stuff going on with folks just not paying attention to the dry dry ocean of grass and low humidity and high winds.....
Mend yer sparks folks !....its dangerous out there !
Prayers for Rain friend.
Stay safe !
Thanks, you do the same.
This is so funny. Perry wants to break Texas off with the United States and be their own “country”, but now suddenly being part of the United States is necessary and is begging the federal government for money. Either you want the state to be on it’s own or you don’t. This might be the most funniest thing I have ever seen.
The very idea that a President can use the Federal Government to punish the states is outrageous if thats what hes doing; but he has got away with too much already.
President Obama probably thought that Texas was not part of the United States anymore since idiot Perry has been begging to succeed from the United States. Perry is getting a preview of things to come if he gets his wish. Supposedly Texas can stand on it’s own but apparently not by the way of his whining and begging.
Not only did we take tens of thousands of displaced Katrina victims, I recall every little town from Houston to Texarkana people opening their homes, wallets, and making sure they were taken care of.
But that’s how we roll here.
What’s funny is your moronic posts. The federal government is responsible for all 57 of obami’s states. Idiots like you are starting to make this site become just what the press has accused it of.
I don’t care. My post is factual and yours is just fuzzy nonsense. Big ole Texas THINKS it can sustain itself and then the next sentence they are begging for money. Either you stand on your own or you become a welfare state like everyone else. Texas is begging for welfare is what it boils down to.
How small of BO to treat Texans so shabbily after Gov. Perry opened rescue shelters all over Houston for the Katrina refugees from New Orleans, many of whom settled in Texas permanently.
Many Texans weren’t that thrilled with the governor’s generosity and the resulting boost in Houston area crime for a time after the storm, but things settled down and we weathered the storm after the storm. The federal government has never repaid that debt of kindness.
Once again, you prove how truly stupid you are.
The federal taxes paid by Texans and Texas companies entitle them to be safe and protected with those same federal tax dollars.
Oh please. Federal taxes are paid by everyone. This is a state’s issue. Pay your own dang problems like the rest of the states. California has more fires than Texas does by far and seems to take care of themselves.
I read that too quickly and thought it said,
“While Negro golfs, Texas burns.”
If Perry really wants to run, this is a great time to do it and the fires the perfect theme to cite: “our fake prez only goes to bat for states, groups, and organizations who vote for him. He is too petty to be in the WH.”
If Texas ever decides to turn off the pipelines of fuel to the north and east, Texans will have the last laugh.
By the way, the area burned in Texas is over 2,000,000 acres, more land area than the states Rhode Island and Delaware combined. And we have been fighting the fires largely on our own with farmers and ranchers trying to save their livestock and property and that of their neighbors. The people of West Texas are quite a cut above the rest of the country.
If Perry really wants to run, this is a great time to do it and the fires the perfect theme to cite: “our fake prez only goes to bat for states, groups, and organizations who vote for him. He is too petty to be in the WH.”
You truly are an idiot. What do you think FEMA is for?
Not for paying your fat pension, that’s for sure.
