John Fund - Weiner Won't Go, but His District Might (Redistricting May Cut Off Weiner's Rise)
John Fund On The Trail ^ | 7 June 2011 | John Fund

If Mr. Weiner manages to survive a pending investigation, his district may not survive the redrawing of congressional district lines in Albany.

New York Democrats are furious with Rep. Anthony Weiner over his fall from grace and his decision to remain in Congress, which will be a lingering embarrassment to them. But even if Mr. Weiner manages to survive a pending House Ethics Committee investigation, his district may not survive the redrawing of congressional district lines that is about to be conducted by state legislators in Albany.

New York must lose two House seats in 2012 due to slow population growth, and one of those districts is almost certain to be in New York City. Mr. Weiner represents a sprawling district in Queens and Brooklyn that borders six other congressional districts and thus could be an easy target for elimination. Due to the Voting Rights Act, none of the existing districts with a majority of black or Hispanic voters can be realistically rubbed out. But Mr. Weiner lacks that protection and already sits in a district where he is on shaky political ground, having won with only 59% of the vote in the Democratic landslide year of 2010.

John Fund continued

"Ironically, the only thing that might save Mr. Weiner's district would be if the process of redrawing the lines were turned over to an independent commission that would be charged with not drawing districts designed for or against individual incumbents. But Mr. Weiner has been a vociferous opponent of that idea, which is supported by former New York Mayor Ed Koch and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Last March, Mr. Weiner told the TV show "Capitol Tonight" that he wants the responsibility of redrawing district lines to remain in the hands of elected officials, insisting that politicians can be fair in their judgments. "I believe that the fair process here can be the political process, too," he insisted. "I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with saying: let politics have its way."

We'll see if Mr. Weiner is singing that same song after his Democratic colleagues in the state legislature have rendered their final decision on his political future."

I guess if Mr. Weiner loses his seat in the House, he can always get a job as a pimp.

I’m not sure why NYC would need to lose a district - the only part of the state that’s growing is the southernmost.

I don’t think the words ‘wiener’ and seat’ should be in the sentence!! :0)

“Not that there’s anything wrong with that!”

Weiner's problem is that he's a pervert, and he's probably addicted to this type of behavior online.

He can't stop, IMO. He will start up again when he thinks it's ok, and he'll be caught.

The Wiener's district is being circumcised.

Because the districts are generally supposed to contain a roughly equal number of residents, Weiner’s district is too small population-wise, and cannot be grossed up by drawing more bodies from surrounding districts, so the better solution is to carve it up and use its warm bodies (and cold bodies, since Democrats will generally be doing the carving) to fluff up surrounding districts.

Besides which, Weiner’s district is not as corrupt, I mean democrat-friendly, as the surrounding districts, so the Democrats would be gaining more than they would be losing by getting rid of Weiner’s district.

Of course, the larger answer would be: NYC should lose all of its Congressional districts because they’re all guilty of criminally negligent voting and should not be trusted with the federal franchise any more.

Shouldn't The Speaker of the House takes steps to expel Weiner and have him prosecuted? or is that displaying too much leadership?

I think this idea of redistricting him out of Congress is a great idea. Then he could move into Harlem in Uncle Bill's old office and run against that other shining example of penultimate ethics, Charlie Rangle and get Maxine Waters to be his campaign manger, set half the city on fire and blame the Republicans, specifically the Bushes.

Me too.

Ohio is going to do the same thing with Kucinich's district.

Unfortunately Rep. Weiner has no useful skills to fall back upon if he loses his congressional seat. He doesn't have a law degree (as if that was a guarantee of big bucks).

Awwww. Cry me the Mississippi River. He still can make out as a male porn star so long as his odious personality doesn't get in the way.

We've got 2 here in NC that have spaghetti districts (long and thin with a blob of favorable precincts here and there). With a little luck we can dump Mel Watt and Brad Miller. Both Rats. Both Pelosibots. One married to Cong. Blk Caucus the other a whore for any progressive/socialist/Marxist ideas he can suck up to.
