Hunting for Huntsman: has the center right finally found its champion? ("Civility Candidate")
Dallas Morning News ^ | By Clayton M. McCleskey

Posted on 06/10/2011 2:52:36 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

It is beginning to appear like civil center-right Republicans may indeed have a horse in the 2012 race -- Jon Huntsman. The more I learn about him, the more I get my hopes up that center-righters may finally find a champion in American politics. The former ambassador to China and governor of Utah brings a soft-spoken, moderate approach to politics. While the rest of the Republicans continue to disappoint (Palin is nuts, Pawlenty isn't worldly enough, Gingrich flamed out ... ), I am growing increasingly interested in Huntsman.

Phil Elliott of the AP has been covering Huntsman (along with all the other candidates and potential candidates).....

Huntsman is trying to portray himself as what an "honest broker" willing to say what others will not. For instance:

[SNIP of left-center left drivel]

I don't agree with everything Huntsman says. However, Huntsman scores mega points in my book because of his civility. In fact, he appears to be positioning himself to run as the civility candidate. Having served the Obama administration as ambassador, he has shown class by not blasting the president while on the campaign trail. While other candidates appear to be trying really hard (Romney's attempts at being folksy are so entertaining to watch) or are pandering to the more populist, provincial wing of the party (Gingrich, Pawlenty and of course, Palin are all guilty of this), Huntsman appears relaxed. He says he just wants to start a dialogue. Every candidate says that, but he looks like he really means it.

Huntsman currently lags in the polls. But I do hope his candidacy will help give shape to a center-right movement in Republican Party that mirrors the direction Britain's Conservative Party has taken.

[SNIP]

He sure outshines the current crop of candidates in the Republican circus.

A "civil" GOP candidate -- "center-right" Huntsman.

Right.

Pull the other one.

Don’t they mean “Jacksonian Democrat” or “Mormon without MassCare” on his resume?

If he’s “center right” where does that put the rest of the bunch?

While he recognizes that America is in a funk, Huntsman doesn't resort to the doom-and-gloom rhetoric many Republicans have chosen. You hear a reasoned, calm assessment of the situation.

Just what Obama needs.

Can’t wait for the first Huntsman ad when at the end you hear “I’m Barack Obama and I approved this message”.

NO Kidding!!

I can’t figure out if this guy is trying to tank any chance Huntsman had (which was 0).

I stopped reading at that point. The more the "center" hates her, the more convinced I am that she is the best candidate.

Run Sarah Run.

The purpose of this piece is to say that all other GOP choices are too "extreme."

You should read how they’re talking about TX Gov Perry and Republicans (like the hate-Palin stuff) in comments over here:

When asked if he were a Mormon a few weeks back, he answered, “It’s complicated.” He got enough flack from the people of Utah (his home state) that he finally admitted he was a Mormon ... of sorts, i.e., NON-practicing and wishing he weren’t. If he doesn’t have enough gumption to sit or get off the pot on what his own religion is or is not, I’m sure he’ll attempt to slither through a lot of other “complicated” issues. He’s another privileged pretty boy who has been able to skip through life. Little wonder he appeals to Obama and the liberal minded.

he has shown class his willingness to lose like John McCain by not blasting the president while on the campaign trail
Anyone who thinks like that thinks that we have to get along with AP journalism. If that is true, we have no chance of winning because AP is determined that we should lose.
The AP is socialism's star linebacker - it is far too fast to run away from, you can only run at it.
If you can't do that, well, you were never going to win in any event.

“He says he just wants to start a dialogue”

Sound familiar? We can’t afford four more years of dialogue.

Why don’t we get Mr. Recession and Mr. Unemployment and Mr. Terrorism and Mr. Debt together at a beer summit in the Rose Garden and talk all our problems away. Got to finish by 1 PM though-tee time at 2.

“brings a soft-spoken, moderate approach to politics”

Yeah. That’s the ticket! We need more MODERATE SOFT-SPOKEN RINO’s in the party. He can sit in the cheap seats with our moderate girls from Maine and join in on the feeding frenzy that is destroying our freedoms.

As our mothers admonished: “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

It would seem such is the msm’s advice to the GOP field of candidates (otherwise they will label you “extreme,” “nutty,” “racist,” “stupid,” .....you know the drill).

Rush has mentioned this the last couple of days, in the vein of, “If you don’t want Sarah Palin because the media has “destroyed” her, then what will you do when they go down the list of GOP candidates and pick each one off in turn until they have the one they want to face their Obama?” (big paraphrasing but the gist of it).

This idea of the msm believing they have the power to pick the GOP candidate is spelled out in the exchange below.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2729973/posts

“...MILLER: How do you get elected president - if she is running, and we still don’t know - how do you get elected president with such hostility on the part of the lame stream media as she calls us?

SCOTT: Are you saying she couldn’t do it, she couldn’t overcome that?

MILLER: I’m saying it’s really hard to overcome dislike and intense hatred of that kind.

POWERS: Yeah, it’s true. It’s very difficult. I mean, when the media turned on Hillary, you saw what happened. You know, they were behind her and they decided, “No, we’re going to go with Obama.” Hard to fight that.....”

I won’t even consider a candidate who will not take obama on. No Mr. Nice Guys. It’s a non-starter for me.
