Republican Governor Robert Bentley on Thursday signed into law a crackdown on illegal immigration in Alabama that both supporters and critics consider the toughest in the nation.
Under the new measure, police must detain someone they suspect of being in the country illegally if the person cannot produce proper documentation when stopped for any reason.
It also will be a crime to knowingly transport or harbor someone who is in the country illegally. The law imposes penalties on businesses that knowingly employ someone without legal resident status. A company's business license could be suspended or revoked.
The law requires Alabama businesses to use a database called E-Verify to confirm the immigration status of new employees.
"We have a real problem with illegal immigration in this country," Bentley said after signing the law. "I campaigned for the toughest immigration laws and I'm proud of the Legislature for working tirelessly to create the strongest immigration bill in the country."

PROUD to be from Alabama.
The only problem I have with this is the law is against American people and American business. DO SOMETHING TO THE CRIMINAL.
Make it a felony to be in the state illegally and the penalty is immediate deportation.
But the state can’t deport
Woo Hoo. Glad he signed it.
ROLL TIDE redneck moat ping!
Did Alabama consult with Mexican President Calderon on this legislation. Did Calderon give his permission? You cannot insult Mexico in this manner. How dare you Alabamians!! /s
Ping!
I think it was two years ago, here in Huntsville, we had an illegal start running from the police in a pickup truck, they didn’t even have the lights on, were just following him . .. ran a red light, hit two teenagers, 17 & 19 and the car burst into flames and they both perished. So sad. The illegal shouldn’t have even been in the country or they’d still be alive today. Hopefully this will help keep tragedies like this from happening again in AL.
I agree.
But take away the incentive, and the ‘criminals’ will go else where.
Hopefully back across the southern border.
Look at it this way, if businesses were unwilling to hire them, if they were unable to rent a place, if they couldn't get welfare, school, medical care, and so on, why would they come here?
Most of that stuff is within the purview of the state. Deportations are strictly the business of the feds.
You know with Bentley it is going to be a mixed bag. He may be way to close to the teacher’s unions for significant improvements to be made in education, but he’ll get more things right than wrong.
“PROUD to be from Alabama.”
And so you should be!
OH, yeah. But that is better than an unmixed bag from the Dims.
“You know with Bentley it is going to be a mixed bag. He may be way to close to the teachers unions for significant improvements to be made in education, but hell get more things right than wrong.”
Well then, he must be a RINO ;-)
Need to add Californians, New Yorkers etc to this...unless they plan on playing football at the U of A...then all’s fair
>>But the state cant deport.<<
No, but the state can make life will be difficult for illegal aliens.
You are right, and for all those who think its easy for a business to know it their workers are legal or not, I remind you of one Meg Whitman: billionaire, with a staff on only one person - and she was fooled by the paperwork. Would Alabama put Meg Whitman in jail? If a billionaire businesswoman married to a successful doctor can get legitimately fooled by the paperwork of one person, what the hell is a poor Bama farmer with 200 workers supposed to do?
I like being tough on immigration over all, but be careful what you wish for when you start punishing natives......
>>Make it a felony to be in the state illegally and the penalty is immediate deportation.<<
Make life tough enough and they deport themselves.
Hurrah for Alabama!
Maybe we need a flag for all of anti-illegal alien states - the ones trying to protect their citizens. Maybe a “bonny blue flag that bears a single star?”
