Anthony Weiner must go: His real sin is plain old stupidity, but that's enough
New York Daily News ^ | Wednesday, June 8th 2011 | S.E. Cupp

In other news . . .

Just kidding! There is no other news. Thanks to one congressman's penchant for provocative photography and his imperfect grasp of Twitter, all anyone can talk about is Anthony Weiner's stunning admission that he is, in fact, the jerk we always suspected him to be.

As a woman, a New Yorker and a conservative political commentator, I can tell you that "Weinergate" has to be one of the more uncomfortable, silly and stomach-churning scandals I've ever covered.

But as much as I would like Anthony and his camera-loving wiener to go away - I didn't get into this business to talk about his pathetic sex life - I do feel compelled to make one final plea to my fellow New Yorkers: Fire Anthony Weiner. We deserve better.

Better? New Yorkers? I know, we have a long and rich history of apologizing for and even celebrating disgraced celebrities. Woody Allen still makes movies. Former Gov. Eliot Spitzer never went to prison. Rep. Charles Rangel is still in office. Dwight Gooden still has fans. The Rev. Al Sharpton is, well, everywhere.

But even if we have an alarmingly high threshold for immorality, one thing we seldom tolerate in this town is stupidity. At least not the magnitude of stupidity that Weiner has shown.

Every step of the way, Weiner has demonstrated such a lack of judgment and has made so many moronic decisions that I have no choice but to seriously question his mental capacity. Did he hit his head? Has he been huffing paint?

Hubris explains a lot of bad decisions, but no one could be this dumb.

For one, there was his choice of medium. Twitter isn't exactly the safest space for secrets. Its sole purpose is to publish and publicize information to as wide an audience as possible. If there is a good place to share naked photos of oneself, Twitter isn't it.

For another, there were his targets: If you're going to flirt with women who are not your wife, shouldn't you make sure you can trust them? High-priced escorts may be known for their discretion, but random college students on Twitter are not.

Then there's the most perplexing question of all: Why would a public figure, whose position makes him ripe for scrutiny, ever, under any circumstances, for any reason, take photographs of himself naked (or close enough) and share them with anyone? Why do those creepy photographs of Weiner's chest and crotch even exist?

As a person privy to the perils of living in the Internet age, wouldn't you think that Weiner would be extra-careful to avoid being caught in just this kind of pickle?

If there isn't an orientation for newly elected officials on how to avoid an Internet sex scandal, there should be. And it should begin and end with just one piece of advice: Don't take naked photos of yourself. Ever.

Certainly, Weiner has company in the idiot club. Brett Favre's sexting was incredibly foolish. Tiger Woods was also colossally dumb. But someone like Weiner, whose ambitions included City Hall, should have been smarter than this.

There are plenty of good reasons to give Weiner the boot. He's an admitted liar. He's a cad. He's a hypocrite. He has no respect for the integrity of his office. And he's embarrassed his party and his constituents. But equally as offensive to me and all New Yorkers should be that Anthony Weiner is a moron. And that's one thing we won't tolerate.

These are the money questions, and I think the best answer to them comes from a guy who Steve Malzberg interviewed on his radio show the other day. I'll paraphrase his answer as best as I can recall it:

"This guy has all the characteristics one would expect to find in a person who has serious career aspirations to be a male porn star."

Or a member of Congress, I guess. Is there really any difference?

Stupidity isn’t a sin.

Adultery, pornography, lying are sins.

NO!!

KEEP the Weiner.

The GOP should back off overtly attackiing this fruitcake and instead surreptitously keep the fires boiling while the Democrats are distracted by this and sweat it out. It will distrct them from creating more havoc in Congress.

The GOP should put forward a censure vote and then be done with it. This is taking the focus off more important matters that the GOP should be hammering the Dems with.

I’m with you. Seems as if you have also read Sun Tzu’s The Art of War. It’s good to observe your enemies and develop intelligence to use against them. The longer Weiner is around the better the argument for conservative philosophy. In addition, political and cultural ties with fellow travelers can be highlighted through the use of photos (i.e. Weiner-Pelosi or Weiner-Obama or Weiner-WassermanSchultz).

Little Anthony, the would be boy wonder (please note the lower case for “boy” and “wonder”), does not have a conscience. He sacrificed it on the altar of expediency—say and do anything to destroy your opposition, especially if they are winning or have won the debate of ideas and redouble your efforts if their position is morally superior to your own. It seems to have worked for his mentor and I'm sure that it is being taught to all the other sleepers in the vast Destroy America at any Cost cells funded by the most evil man to have walked the face of the earth, George Soros.

Thank you New York City for once again proving you have no low to which you will stoop to protect the evil you cherish and treasure.

There’s a difference between being stupid and acting stupid. He’s not stupid. He’s a pervert. But in New York that’s not a disqualifying factor.

If this and this are examples of how acting Rep Weiner treats a pregnant woman, I predict he loses the wife before the job.

"He who is void of virtuous Attachments in private Life, is, or very soon will be void of all Regard for his Country. There is seldom an Instance of a Man guilty of betraying his Country, who had not before lost the Feeling of moral Obligations in his private Connections." (Emphasis added) - Samuel Adams - Letter to James Warren, November 4, 1775

America's Founders understood human nature and the human tendency to betray trust, to abuse delegated power, and need for a written Constitution to protect "We, the People" from such flaws in human nature.

Although the recent false idea that persons in positions of power can "compartmentalize" their tendencies in such a way that disloyalty and lack of fidelity to friends and family do not signify the same tendencies in matters of public trust, wise persons throughout the ages have known better.

You know Arnold loves Anthony Weiner, because there hasn't been a peep about him since Weiner's Weiner hit the news.

I agree. The Honorable Member is one of the better opportunities we have had. Let him twist slowly in the wind as the Democrats try to minimize the damage to themselves. The results will be bad for them and good for the rest of us.

He’s not leaving. All the calls for resignation crap is just a delaying tactic. And it’s working.

And that crap about Huma and him meeting in a motel room Monday night is crap. She’s overseas with her real lover.
