CNN Poll: Obama approval rating drops as fears of depression rise (Rick Perry anyone?)
CNN Political Ticker ^ | June 9, 2011 | CNN Political Unit

Posted on 06/09/2011 2:51:31 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Forty-eight percent say that another Great Depression is likely to occur in the next year - the highest that figure has ever reached. The survey also indicates that just under half live in a household where someone has lost a job or are worried that unemployment may hit them in the near future. The poll was conducted starting Friday, when the Labor Department reported that the nation's jobless rate edged up to 9.1 percent.

"The poll reminded respondents that during the Depression in the 1930s, roughly one in four workers were unemployed, banks failed, and millions of Americans were homeless or unable to feed their families," says Holland. "And even with that reminder, nearly half said that another depression was likely in the next 12 months. That's not just economic pessimism - that's economic fatalism."

According to the survey, more than eight in ten Americans say that the economy is in poor shape, a number that has stubbornly remained at that level since March.

Not surprisingly, with that much economic angst, the economy is the number one issue, the only one that more than half of the public says will be extremely important to their vote for president next year. Nearly all issues that at least four in ten say will be extremely important to their vote are domestic issues. Terrorism also makes that list, but Afghanistan is fairly low and Libya is tied for dead last out of the 15 issues tested. Abortion and gay marriage also rank very low, indicating that 2012 may be an election that is shaped more by bread-and-butter issues than social and moral concerns.

Question: What branch of the government has the authority to authorize spending? Whichever one it is, they need to get busy and stop authorizing it.

Seriously, just who is in control of the House Appropriations Committee? There must be a majority on that committee that can take action.

Talking tough and doing nothing about the nations out of control credit card is totally disingenuous and finacially dangerous political grandstanding. Somebody is telling us they want to do something about, have the power to do it but are not doing it.

Here are a group of articles about Perry and the border

Perry has been pushing Obama on this issue every chance he gets.

The difference between a Recession and Depression is a quick letter switch — from D to R. Thanks Cincinatus’ Wife.

He won despite the push by establishment GOP to elect Kay Bailey Hutchison.
That's because she was more despised than him and Texans were sick and tired of the establishment GOP trying to repeat what they had done before through foisting Bush on us! The establishment GOP all but placed the scepter in his hand.
And don't get me wrong, Bush was "all right" as a governor. But it was still Congress that ultimately held sway. He did well as POTUS as well despite being dealt the hand he got after entering office. Yet through it all he was nothing more than the centrist he had always been and who, like Perry, knew which way the political winds blew and floated with it.

So Perry beating out Hutchison in no way gives him any gravitas or impetus in my book.

These are my opinions and others may differ, as is their right.

Oh, please! Don't insult my intelligence! You're linking to his website!
Do you expect anything but glowing praise from there?

Perry has been pushing Obama on this issue every chance he gets.
Yeah, he's pushing him for more useless "virtual fence" BS and giving lip service to "putting boots on the ground".

And this piece of _)(*_@#*_*%%_*( infuriates me!
Federal law enforcement authorities rarely inspect vehicles heading south into Mexico from the United States even though many weapons used by the cartels are purchased in this country.
Helloooooo....it's called Fast and Furious and the ATF is responsible for that! >>>spitting tacks<<<

There is no mention of Perry in the article that this thread is based on, nor is there a mention of Perry in the survey that the article itself is based on.

As to Perry, I think he is a nonstarter as a national candidate. He’s a johnny-come-lately on illegal immigration and really hasn’t had that much to do with Texas’s positive business climate. Also, he is far too reminiscent of W in speech and style for those still recovering from W’s turn with the presidency.

A woman who is tied at the hip to McCain is hardly a threat to the status quo in DC.

Thanks for the info. I put it into the “worth looking into” category. I don’t know anything about Perry and will read up on him.

He did, to his credit, back off both those ideas when it became evident there was no public support. Unlike most Pols today who disregard public opinion as a general practice.

It LINKS to articles philman. Discuss them.

He did sign the voter ID Bill and the teacher’s unions are marching on the TX capital because the legislature wouldn’t tap more of our rainy day fund (even though education money went UP — but not as much as the unions wanted).

I continue to be surprised at Freepers who think Sarah Palin would accept the second spot on the ticket two elections running.

Good point.

We need the House, the Senate and the White House (and as many conservative votes as we can muster).

The CNN Poll and subsequent article, tells me that they’d like Mitt Romney to win the primary. Why? Because he will not fire up the base and Obama will demagogue his way into another 4 years (and the total collapse of the U.S. economy).

Sorry about the BP philman and thank you for the comments.

To add to the border issue, it's the GOP dynasty Bushes (by way of the face of George [P. -- Jeb's son] Bush who's courting the Texas Hispanics and building a GOP Hispanic Caucus.

Could it be the GOP is looking ahead to a third Bush White House?

Why is that surprising? You could be right but I don't see her as only in this to be the top of the ticket.

I’m surprised anyone thinks Palin would be picked as a VP. THAT will never happen.

I like Rick Perry and always have. The shriller the Paulites become, the more I like him. You hardly hear a thing about Obama on borders, but every single GOP possible has RINO cooties.

Perry can get back to the rest of us when he has successfully shut down the Tex-Mex border issue. If he can’t/won’t control the border of his own state, he surely can’t/won’t control those of the United States. Perry=status quo...and the same minds that made this mess..are not capable of its solution.

"No public support"?! People being furious with his "ideas" and the possibility of financial improprieties in both instances equates to no public support?! WOW!
He got dragged off of those ideas kicking and screaming the whole way!
