The police force has been demoralized during the Daley years. As long as the wilding was contained in their neighborhoods, no one cared. Now that it is spilling out to the Gold Coast and North Shore, everyone is paying attention.
And right where my son lives.
But if it occurs on the Gold Coast or the Near North side or State Street, it affects city tax revenue in a big way if high-end, profitable businesses are ransacked, or destroyed....or if they close or move out.
Emanuel is very aware of this. The Chicago business community is now putting enormous pressure on him and the City Council. He's already quietly put around 500 more police on foot on the streets. Folks are reporting seeing them in clusters patrolling the intersections where the perps gather to plan their attacks.
Emanuel may surprise some people with a firmness not found in former Mayor Richie Daley. To keep the peace, Daley just paid off the aldermen and community organizers in the black precincts who in turn paid off the gang leaders to keep things cool.
It's a different ball game now with new and different tactics on the part of the gangs rquiring new and different tactics on the part of a mayor as well as John Law.
The new police head just brought on board is one tough SOB. We shall find out about the mettle of Emanuel and the new police superintendant as both the weather and the unemployed black yutes get hotter in the City of Broad Shoulders.

That is proof that the progressive elite truly do not care about the residents of the "hoods". If they did they'd have been calling for prosecution of the offenders when they were staying local as well as when they started to roam.
Since one definition of a conservative is a liberal who has been mugged, lets hope that they are in the next few target zones.
You can’t claim “no one cared” when it was happening in their own neighborhoods. In black neighborhoods, they love to rant that they aren’t being protected and yet, when the police try to probe an incident it seems that “no one saw anything.” The police are then berated for being racists or for being too “rough” with a suspect. No police officer wants to deal with black crime in a black neighborhood because not only can it be dangerous for them but can often result in a career coming to a dead end due to claims of police brutality. Many in black neighborhoods seem to want it both ways and the police can only do so much.
